I am a mature gamer who absolutely loves space simulator games. I am a backer of Elite Dangerous and also Star Citizen.
Elite Dangerous has so much potential and the future could be mind boggling. So why don't I find myself logging in very much even though I love the gameplay?
There are no channels to chat in....If you are the kind of player like me that likes to get out of the hubs and go into deep space, the game is deathly quiet and pretty dry.
When I started EvE Online I remember mining for countless hours but it was fine. I would ask questions in the new chat channel then over time answer questions for new players. An essential component to any online game is interaction with the gaming community but in ED's I find myself searching websites for answers or going on forums to actually see other players who play the game.
Yes I know there are Wings now and you can team up. But how and why can they overlook a major component of an online game? Especially a space one where there are lengthy times mining, exploring or just heading out into deep space. worse still, if I come across a player once every 4 weeks by the time we say hello, one of us has warped off and the channel goes dead.
If they want to keep some realism in the game then make it possible to chat with people up to a certain distance or faction or area.
No matter what amazing things they do to this game I keep scratching my head at this one and personally I think EDs will die a slow death once other space sims come out with strong community and communication frameworks...
Confused...

My thought exactly and the only strong reason I'm not buying it right now. MMO should be about community in my opinion.
It does not mean I will not buy it eventually (curiosity, boredom, steam sales...) but I will miss community effect forever.
No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.
There is local space chat, or if you needed something more global you can always come to EliteDangerous on Quakenet IRC.
Yea chat functions are a bit lacking.
I think the main problem is the game's multiplayer part is P2P. The only things on the server are the economy and the galaxy itself. Theres no central chat server for it to go though, so it's only limited to inside your session or directly to a friend etc.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
I kind of like it. It allows things to fit into the more scientific vibe that the game has. Talking to people with instantaneous FTL communications or people who are in instances that you can't even see would break a lot of the immersion. At least this way it's a bit more explainable and what you see is what you get.
Granted, most people don't give a toot about those sort of things.
