These are proportional scores. I.e. I think ESO is a better game than Wildstar/Archeage (and about on par with SWTOR), but it was hyped way more. Celebrity voice actors, huge cinematic promo videos, etc. Was writing cheques the devs couldn't cash.
And I have to laugh at people saying WoW was a fail, because if it is, I have some very bad news about, well, every other MMO.
1. World of Warcraft above all, although its a market success and changed the landscape for MMORPGs, back in time i was a huge fan of Warcraft III, and i was excited about the coming MMORPG. I was already playing in the strategy game RPG custom games, and then i saw the betas of WoW. I had a blast of dissapointment. It was the same as the custom RPG games i played into Warcraft III with just more toons, the graphics the same... Then i heard about the RvR between 2 factions and i knew that this game won't be for me at all... It was the first time i was wating for an MMO and it was so different from my expectations..
2. Age of Conan, i wanted so badly to play this game but it was not even playable and demanded so many sources only to reach the recommended settings and then there were only bugs..
3. BlackDesertOnline, the last one everything was great in the closed betas, it was like a medieval EVE online economy system into a Lineage 2 open world pvp and politics world. But at the open beta they mixed it hard and the result was to nerf the open world and screw the economy and trade.. At the current state is another Korean "freemium" ..
This may not answer OP's question; I have not experienced any of these hype failures so far, in terms of games that gone gold. I usually do not follow MMORPGs in development, as I believe that to really know I will enjoy the game or not, is when I have a hands-on on the game.
Take for example ESO. I had joined the beta only after seeing the news here that beta is up. I play without feeding/be fed wth the hype, and it feels refreshing and new, not like a "I have seen this all over the place." It still does not catch my attention though, but I will not classified ESO as a failed hype as I play the game as if it is new to me.
Another game is Neverwinter, coincidentally, also know of the beta through here (Thanks MMORPG! ) Though I have my grudges with this game, this game has made me learn to appreciate and enjoy with action-y MMORPG. If i have to look at the hype before, I will definately go "It's not a EQ/WOW! I must hate it!"
I always do not look forward to incoming games, only reserve my expectation when the games go live. That way, I will not have bad experiences, and I can look at each game objectively, and enjoy the game as it is. Call me simple-minded and naive towards MMOPRGs. I call it "enjoy the first hand experience", even if the game is a tud of steaming brown.
Of course, if fanatics go hyping "THI5 GAME RULEZ ALL 1 TERA PETA GIGA ZILLIONS COPIES 5OLD!!!!" and proceed to pull the numbers out of their asses, and if there are counterproofs to squash the hypes, it is a fair game to treat it as "biggest failed hype of the century" lol
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.

Point is that every game since like, 2004 received crapton of hype, the only way to mesure is scope of failure afterwards.
The only hype fail mmorpg I ever played was warhammer online.
I did play plenty of others that weren't that good, but swtor was mostly the game it was advertised to be, and the same thing could be said about games I beta-tested like gw2, eso and wildstar. I don't even know why people were so hyped up about archeage.
The problem is that people would rather build their own dream castle based on what developers say instead of viewing information critically.

DAoC - Excalibur & Camlann
1. ESO
2. SWTOR
3. Wildstar/Archeage

1. GW2
2. Age of Conan
3. SWTOR (I actually liked this game until cash shop took it over)
Future numero uno will be EQN.
well i will type for mine 3 worse hype fails:

The easier to answer question would be: which MMO of the last few years was NOT!?
Somehow all of them fell vastly behind their potential and their expectations.
