[Column] General: Five More Intriguing MMOs That Didn't Launch

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In almost two decades of watching and writing about the massively multiplayer landscape, the announcement of a new project has never failed to catch my attention. That said, they don't all do so to the same degree; some interest me far more than others. Over the years, I've seen at least several hundred titles enter development. For a variety of reasons, they didn't all make it as far as launch, including some that had exceptional appeal for me.

Privateer Online 2 is on the go right now :) It's called Star Citizen :)

It still boggles my mind that Project Copernicus is still sitting out there, losing value by the day. Or maybe that's what people are waiting for, see how low it can go before the state will allow it to be sold.

Copernicus died because they did not hire a financial guy to handle the money.  They hired way too many people, I think they had 400 on the project when it folded, for the financial backing they had.

I can tell you from experience that hiring more people just tends to muck up the project than speed it to completion.  Sad they were not aware of that fact or chose to ignore it.

Earth and Beyond was buggy, but it was fun to play.  I think the timing of the game was the problem.  It would do much better today.

There is still no viable space MMO's beyond Eve and EA's version ofStar Wars today and Eve space based and is far too complex for many people.  EA completely messed up the space portion of Star Wars so it is strictly a ground game.  Oh for a MMO that can have space and ground action.

CCP was all ready in the dog house for me with some of its policies but I was giving them a chance with World of Darkness. I will no longer support CCP on anything now that WoD is shelved. What a huge story rich world with unlimited potential.

Well, I'd say 'Imperator' too, but other then that... 'Titan' and 'World of Darkness' most.

Had no idea about 'Midgard', especially with Ragnar being at it. Interesting.

    Good read. Thank you.

Copernicus is the big one, almost complete and sat on a server waiting to be sold - wish some one would buy it and get it out there.

    Playing: FFXIV
Future: wishing for SWG 2, World of Warcraft Classic
Played: Most current and extinct MMO's - 18 Years in....

    Interesting Fact - I own 27 Tarantula's

While it might not be a recent game i remember being very hyped about Dragon Empires from Codemasters
  • meonthissitemeonthissite Member UncommonPosts: 917

Never heard of Midgard but that looks like it would have been awesome to play that!

I was also saddened by WoD but I have to say it was their fault. First the developers only wanted to have one of the 5 original stories in the game which was Vampires. Second, they said they "MAY" launch the other books (mage, changling, hunter, werewolf) later on which I can truly say as a fan that was a slap in the face. Is it any wonder why it didn't take off?!

Seriously, who do these people hire to make these decisions sometimes?

Titan will haunt me for a long time I think, but at the same time with Blizzard saying they couldn't figure out how to make it fun at all, we probably didn't really miss out on much. But still because it was a new mmog from Blizzard, just the sheer curiosity of what it was and never being able to find out bothers me. Warhammer: Dark Millennium Online is probably the one I wanted the most since Age of Reckoning failed for being released unfinished. I know it became Eternal Crusade and we're still getting that, but I just really wanted a WH 40K mmorpg.

I picture a World of Darkness MMO as Second Life with resource management -- blood sucking, and training an army of NPC goons to guard your lair. You would also want something like raid guilds to kindle the politics and intrigue that fans of the vampire genre crave. Some sort of competitive PVE (or PVP, but I think that turns off a lot of gamers, especially female gamers).

I am afraid though that it would turn into farming Antediluvians for purples.

Project Titan is probably the one that bothers me the most, especially considering they pulled resources from WoW while they were working on the project. Now, Blizzard is focusing on HotS, Hearthstone and Overwatch. All of which are fine games for the genre they are aiming for, but Blizzard is seemingly moving away from most of their storytelling, which is something I enjoyed from them quite a bit in the past.

Other games not on the list I wanted to see were Imperator, Dragon Empires and UO2.

  • bamwallabamwalla Member UncommonPosts: 221
UO2 should be on that list as well.  Titan is a shame just because of what time and resources must have gone into it only to have it cancelled.  Perhaps, at least, they used some of the ideas and breakthroughs in the production of Titan and are applying them to new and exciting projects.  Kind of like refrigeration or... super glue.

I beta'd a game called dark sun online. I don't think it launched. Terrible game

I was really hyped for Dominus a few years back. It had some interesting concepts.

no mention of two games that made me very sad when they died.  Wish and Dragon Empires.  There is also a little game known as Charr the Grim fate, but that game never actually went any where so I don't think it counts.

the missing link in a chain of destruction.

All spelling and typographical errors are based soely on the fact that i just dont care. If you must point out my lack of atention to detail, please do it with a smile.

Can not believe Ultima X is not included on this list.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

    Imperator

Was supposed to be an MMO by Mythic(DAoC fame) set in a futuristic Rome that had never fallen.

I was so looking forward to this one - still have an Imperator shirt and baseball cap as my reminders of what might have been!

they could not make Titan fun?  Like litteraly, how hard it is to just ask people what they would like the most and add few simple stuff based on the answers. Blizzard never listens to the people, and just goes on and on making new games.
  • prestodotexeprestodotexe Member Posts: 35
If Blizzard created a game to pull players from WoW they would be wasting money, they still and always will have so many subs in WoW. Create new games once the playerbase in WoW dies out, not while it still thrives so long in the series of expansions.

    haha presto!

Of all the titles that didn't launch, I was most excited for SGW and Hero's Journey.

But SGW turned out to be an investment MLM scheme, and Hero's Journey was just a ruse to attempt to showcase the Hero engine.

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
