Shroud of the Avatar: Latest Update Details First Player-Owned Town

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Shroud of the Avatar update letter has arrived and it's packed with tons of interesting tidbits about the game. Of particular note is the arrival of the game's first player-controlled town. Called PaxLair, the town is serving as a 'sandbox' for developers to work out the specifics and mechanics of the system overall.

It has been almost a year since the first PoTs were purchased, and now, with Release 17, all backers will be able to experience SotA’s first player owned town, PaxLair. It is still a work-in-progress, while we collaborate with the owners of PaxLair to sort through the issues of template-based town development. But even given all these constraints, once we were able to walk through this first iteration of a player owned town, it was a moving experience.

Check out the entire, and fascinating, description of the player-owned town on the Shroud of the Avatar site.

The hedge fence screenshot reminded me of Kazola's Tavern. :)

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

It would be cool to me if I didn't hate the skill deck mechanic so much.

Can't help but notice how the game looks like it's 2003.

People don't play Minecraft for its cutting edge graphics.

It looks a tad better now that they have upgraded to Unity 5.  But unless they have some very talented artists and rendering coders Unity just looks 2003 out of the box.  Compare that to Unreal where anything you make looks amazing because of the lighting and rendering technology.

The guys that made "The Forest" and the "Reign of Kings" guys have managed to make Unity look good, real good in game, but that's about the only two games I've seen published that approach the rendering quality of Unreal or Crytek.

And please, no screenshots of Unity showing us how amazing it looks.  Screenshots are like glam photos.  If you want a Unity game to look AAA you need to do allot of custom work on the engine.

This game development reminds me of Revival with its player-owned homes. However, I don't like the tax-free lots SoA is selling in the pledge section. I won't play SoA just because of this. The people who will have fun in this game are the ones that are throwing lots of cash to have an advantage.

The 11,000 dollar pledge level is sold out! That is crazy!

Right. I have to force myself to go play some time or another so I'm not screwed out of a decent house lot for lack of alpha knowledge. /sigh

Are you being arrogant or snarky??

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Good game, I can recommend - the social aspects has huge impact there, many friendly units around.

The problem is the really bad aesthetic choices not the graphic engine.

I spent 29.99 on DayZ and played a whole 27 minutes or so. I know how you feel even though you dished out more =/

it is not released but 7 Days to Die looks pretty good. . especially after the Unity 5 update.

As for the game.  I am going to wait until it is done.  I bought in early because I wanted to support the idea.   I don't love the 'deck' idea for combat either but I have not tried it.

I did the $110 ages ago. I forgot I had it. I'll have a quick look since I paid for it.
