Or all the QoL changes and fixes are making the difference.

Not sure, but the wife(boss) loves it now, and wants to make it her main game. I just say yes:) I agree with her mind you.
Probably you guys aren't min/maxer pvpers and don't feel any level grind to VR14. If that's true, you can just take your time and enjoy the beautiful art and the well done quests. Why not?

Definitely not min/maxers. Just enjoying the ride.

When I first hit VR1 last May I quit. Just felt like brick wall hit me and quit. Rolled a new sorcerer last October and leveled it to VR11 while having fun. Now I have VR2 Templar and still having fun. Of course some purists say that it isn't a TES game but for me it is. I just hope that B2P won't halt development because ESO needs content. Both PvE and AvAvA.

It won't.
There are plenty of B2P games out there that frequently add new content. (And even more F2P titles that do it.)

The story and quests are very gripping in ESO. I really enjoyed the art style as well as exploring the world. It is a different kind of MMORPG, one that I am very comfortable to play on my own without much interaction, but I don't think that's necessarily bad.

It's a nice breath of fresh air.
We re the eame. Little interaction but when we want to our guild is great. I m really enjoying the game, and glad we gave it another chance.

I am optimistic, I just wish Zenimax was more forthcoming with future plans.
Its good to see people returning. My friend bailed early in beta when we experienced a lot of phasing issues. I still haven't been able to convince him to return but hopefully soon
Lotro has been my mainstay game since its release. I typically will take off a few months here and there and try out new games. So far ESO has kept me hooked for about 6 months and I'm not even half way through. Of course I am a very casual player but its been a lot of fun.

This is the number one problem with most games. People go in hearing nothing but negative, and it snowballs.
Far, far to easy to put it down to "negativity".
Azaron_Nightblade posted two reasons. The other was QoL.
By and large the general tenor of peoples comments was positive. Gripes sure: lack of an AH, storage space, - which haven't changed - the veteran system which sort of has but mostly the tenor of peoples comments was positive.
But - for there is a very big but - Zenimax gave people a lot of little stuff to be upset about.
Bugs, the phasing issues, the bots, crashes, frequent downtime early on, security issues - people getting into other peoples characters, item duplication and so on. To many reviews were along the lines: would be a good game if only you could play it.
So this wasn't a "ver' ver' good show" on the part of Zenimax. This was someone setting a date for the game to release, ready or not.
We, as customers, have every right to expect better and be disappointed by poor products. TESO wasn't ready. No excuses. Yoshida had already posted his 10 bullets points as to why FFXIV failed; the lessons were out there. And launches can be done a lot better e.g. Destiny (because it also uses phasing).
So I am inclined to go with Azaron_Nightblade's other reason: QoL changes. The ability to actually enjoy the game.
As I say way to easy to "blame it all" on negativity.
And - frankly - if you have bought the game and are playing it, and enjoying it you couldn't care less about what other people think. I certainly couldn't care less about negative comments if I am enjoying a game.
I recently went back and couldn't get into it. It was more of the same experience for me and I couldn't keep interested. The redundancy just killed me. I am glad you and your wife like it. A game you can both play and enjoy is a good thing.

No reason to assume it will get any worse; a slither of a reason to hope that it might get better.
If you actually look at how much "new" content there has been since launch the answer is "not a lot". Lots and lots of Quality of Life fixes but not much in the way of new content.
Think back to Skyrim: all three expansions were released in just over a year. Nothing like that has happened for TESO.
At the end of the day it comes down to money. Zenimax have changed to B2P because they believe they will make more. Doesn't mean they will churn out content though.
However - and this is the slither of hope - with a B2P system no new content = no new money. With subs ... well Blizzard went 14 months without content - and even then that was just the pre-WoD patch; people basically had to buy the new content. So a slither - but it will come down to sales.
I agree with OP, I didn't warm to this at first and now I think it's great. I hope they keep supporting and adding content. The graphics are the best I've seen in an MMO too.
I like(ed) ESO a lot, the questing is absolutely first class. However, after running one character through the sillion quests for all three factions, I found it hard to find the motivation to level another. I haven't been playing actively for a while, but are there other viable options for leveling 1-VRx than doing the quest lines now? When I played, the dungeons only granted effective XP the first run, and grinding open world mobs weren't really effective either. Since race traits really matters in ESO, you can't just jump from f.i. stamina to magica builds on the same toon and expect to stay 100% competetive. Then you have to level up new characters for completely new builds.

or maybe they made it B2P because they felt they couldn't charge a sub on the consoles? sure it comes down to money because if they charged a sub on the consoles it would definitely flop there.
obviously they cannot have it be B2P on the consoles and P2P on PC.
I bought the game for the Alliance vs Alliance (AVA) feature. It was supposed to share a major focus of the developers as the game went forward. Matt Firror was specifically hired because he could bring his expertise(he helped found and develop Dark Age of Camelot.... the best faction vs faction game ever made) to ESO.
Trailer after trailer was produced to hype the AvA experience players were lead to expect.
THE REALITY......AvA has had zero new features since the game was launched(In fact 13 year old DAOC has had far far more features added to that aging game). Lag , disconnects and ques still dominate ESO player AvA experience.
As for the pve side of the game......its too action / twitch oriented for my tastes(animation cancelling is dominant among the top players)
I don't play the game even though it is free, and I certainly would not pay a subscription.
Of course some will use this post to labile me a mindless hater. I feel I was duped with promises not kept, and I don't like it.

I tried this game in beta for like a week. I stopped playing because it was incomplete. I didn't touch it again till a couple weeks ago. I'm glad I waited. I heard so many bad things about this game. I really don't know why at this point. I feel like it's what everyone would want in an mmoRPG. It feels so different than every mmo out there and the quests are actually engaging. I think people got so used to grinding and rushing to max level that they forgot to stop and smell the fake roses.

I wonder if it was still the original price plan would he and his wife love it so much.

For many that's exactly the reason they hate on it. A bunch of people (especially on this site) don't want engaging quests. They want massive timesinks and endless grinding so that they proclaim its some great achievement when they've "endured" it all the way to max level.
Which for me translates into /yawn followed by /quit. Give me a game like ESO, TSW and SWTOR any day over those mindless grindfests.
But... different strokes and all that.
