World chat . bad more than good.

iixviiiixiixviiiix Member RarePosts: 2,256

Nowadays , everything in MMOs are convenient.  World chat likely one of must have features in any MMOs.

World chat (World chat ,LFG chat , Trading chat ect ...)

It have many good side , but the bad side of it ruin everything IMO.

Spam fill the chat box , it rarely used as it intended to be.

Because of that , in most of game , i close off the world chat as soon as i log in the first time.

I don't think remove world chat will be good , but at less i want to see world chat get restricted.

For example  it need to be used as in game gold consume and with cooldown for each time use.

How can it 'ruin everything' when you have the option to turn it off?

Some enjoy world chat. Options are nice.

How well a game handles the chat functions is one of those things that will make or break a game for many, the more restricted the in game chat is, the less appealing the game is, but there is one huge exception imo, the only time where restricting chat is a positive thing, is when it comes to voice chat, pretty much the only people i would want in a voice chat channel are those i invite myself, unrestricted voice chat is a nightmare, which for me will utterly destroy any game no matter how good it is in other respects.image

I always liked Lineage II for not having a real world chat. The only 2 semi-world chats it has are clan/alliance and hero (only 34 players have access to it after winning the monthly PvP arenas). All other chat is regional, limited to a certain radius from your position...

World Chat is awful. Literally the cesspool of MMORPGs. The worst players all congregate there and force their ignorance on everyone else. The only way to have fun and not be driven insane is to leave/disable World Chat.

You must play a game with people capable of rationality and understanding.

People can't be forced to do anything on the internet. Everyone thinks that -they- are right and no-one is willing to concede their point.

If you play a game that actually has reasonable, honorable players, please tell me what it is. My main experience with world chat comes from World of Warcraft and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

When people are openly declaring criminal activities in world chat but the admins don't care. (Read: things that would easily land you in jail) Yeah, I don't think I'm the one that is in the wrong here. World chat fosters a negative community. In fact when you gather a large amount of people in one area the most loud and annoying people are going to drive away the players that just want a friendly environment to play in. Personally I just want to run around and not have people constantly talk about doing drugs and being banned from a country for reasons. Realistically I want a family-friendly environment (and weirdly enough I've been having some luck with this in ArcheAge) or just a friendly environment that doesn't constantly talk about criminal activities.

I have. Makes things difficult when it (world chat) is the main mechanic in a game to form groups though.

your personal preferences aren't sufficient for determining if the rest of the playerbase can have a global chat or not.

I see you missed my hint on the "Ignorance".

I have been rational pursuing my part of this conversation. Obviously you have not been so kind. I would have liked to pursue a reasonable conversation but I see that rational, explained thought is not welcome. Instead of responding to the points that I have made you decided to attack me personally? Well played!

thats because GMs are too busy picking their noise instead of banning when was the last time u had someone banned because he was an !$!$!$ on public chat? becaus i have seen everything , from sexual harrasment , racism , and things i would like to forget , but yet this ppl arent ever banned , maybe some GM mute them or bann them for some hours , like a slap on the wrist, because once they are back online , they use the ban as a medal , 3th time im banned LOLOLOLOL and keep doing whatever they were doing before .../facepalm

I would actually really like a (sandbox) MMORPG without any kind of world chat. It would force people to be physical present to talk to others (or send letter via pigeons!). The big cities would be full again, it would add meaning to having a guild hall etc.

I guess it's the classical example of Utility versus Immersion: of people who "just want to play a game" versus people who "want to live in a coherent world".

I would pay an extra $1 a month to play on a server where the admins/GM's ban people for spamming their immature and unwanted trash in chat.

Why?  Because I don't want to turn off global chat.  When it's actually used for what it was meant to be used for, it was nice.

To be honest, the gold-farmer spam in global chat is the least of my worries (because I don't pay free to play games).  It's the trash that muck up the chat with their sewer/gutter-speak that need to 'be gone'.

Now, so many people have turned off global chat channels that games need 'group finder', 'raid finder', and all sorts of other 'auto-grouping/group-assist' tools.

Without any proper regulation of chat, games have done nothing but help perpetuate stupidity, immaturity, and 'the dumb'.  90% of the time, I really don't want to see the Trolls in chat.  I'd rather they just go play on servers that welcome them.  They can have their place.  I'd like the option to have a server that doesn't welcome them, doesn't support them, and doesn't allow them at all.

People actually get mad when they are reported.   When all they are typically trying to do is gross people out or make others mad to begin with.  How about give them their idiots paradise on the 'regular' servers, and give the rest of us (those that don't want to see, hear, or be forced to read their trash) a server of our own?

Again, I would gladly pay an extra $1 a month to have a troll-free server.   :)

    because... choices.

If you dont like it, turn it off. Don't ruin it for us who like to talk to people. World chat is nice to talk to people while playing. I loved world chat in lotro it made the game quite social.

Turn it off, don't try to take that option away from people who like chatting while playing. /thread?

Never seen anyone talk about this in world chat. Again turn it off. Is it so difficult?

    This.

Since WoW I've pretty much played every game with world chat disabled.  I talk to people in areas, but I don't think it even makes sense for you to be able to have a public universal discussion in a virtual world.  Oh ya, thats right, MMOs aren't virtual worlds any more, they are just games.

Well, even WoW (in the very beginning) did make some *small* efforts at policing the cesspool.

I think they just realized it was a money-negative proposition to even try.

MMO's are victims of their own massive-ness. Really small titles have no difficulty controlling their chat channels. But really small titles are bad,"eewww where is everyone, this game is fail". You can't have that cake and eat it too.

I'm generally a talkative sort.  But global channels are disabled.  Gold spammers live there.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

I think of this as the jackass saturation level. If you have 1 jackass for every x number of people, than at lower numbers of people the jackasses are somewhat isolated from one another and can be generally ignored and mocked by the player base. At a certain number of people however the number of jackasses reaches a critical mass and they are able to take over a chat channel. At this point it becomes sort of a snowball effect as wannabe jackasses are emboldened by the antics of the established jackasses. Complaining about the situation is met with similar response as is it does here "If you don't like it turn it off". Of course this means for the most part reasonable people all turn off the chat further skewing the jackass ratio in favor of the jackasses.

Personally I think MMOs would be better off without global chat channels, but it only hides the problem. The only real solution is to avoid games where too many people are in the same world. I think this is a big reason why so many recent MMOs have been so disappointing. The game releases to too wide of an audience so you reach jackass saturation level straight off the bat. When people talk about community in a game what they are really talking about are lower levels of jackass saturation.

I have no idea how to solve this in larger titles.

A map chat is like any other tool. You can use a knife to make a bread or to kill someone. The tool doesn't make it good or bad. Langauge and writing can be used to start wars. But should be forbid writing because of it?

Yes, some people in chat are morons. So what? Why do you seek to forbid chat just because some few loudmouths have to proper upbringing? Why must we decend peope suffer silence because of the few idiots in chat? I just don't see that logic.

People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert

The chat method is scarcely the problem and is almost always the people taking advantage / abusing the facilities provided to talk about inane rubbish. Chat channels are by their definition going to be laden with commentary and people are very immature. I don't generally have a problem just ignoring it but there's 99% of the time a method to turn it off if it's that big a deal.
  • EronakisEronakis Member UncommonPosts: 2,249

I kinda like how GW2 does it. Each zone has their own dedicated chat for that area. But then in some little ways I do like World Chat as well. I remember on my Everquest server World Chat actually wasn't that bad. I remember some interesting conversations about the game and other topics. But yes with any mmorpg there was trolling and a lot of nonsense.

To be honest i think the primary reason why most world/trade chats are bad is simply because pre 2004, most mmorpg gamers where true mmorpg gamers who really enjoyed the game and the genre for the most part. Now we have other immature kids and adult men who don't care about the community. The community is the bedrock of mmorpgs.

  • EronakisEronakis Member UncommonPosts: 2,249
Solo gameplay is just a bad idea for mmorpgs for those who want community and a better world/trade chat. I think it would be much improved if the community as a whole was more mature. Players used to help other players and would be quick and kind enough to give advice. When you have more group content where you are more dependent on other players you build a reputation on the server. When you troll consistently and act like an asshat you're behavior gets noticed. Thus this would simmer down idiots in world/trade chat. I won't say it won't ever go away but it would diminish it quite a bit.

The fact that solo gameplay is so popular (even in polls here!) is pretty much evidence that there are really not that many who cares about community or better chat.

If i want a good chat channel, i highly doubt i need to go to a game to get it.

What polls? Please post them. I think you're one of the few who really just want to solo and not socialize with anyone. You make the same case every single time. There is proof of that.

You see bad communities is just one of many aspects of why mmorpgs are awful. MMORPG's where meant to have social aspects to the game. Go play a solo rpg if you don't want to converse with anyone. It's that simple.
