Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen: Internal Alpha 1 Nears & Other News in the May Update

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen site has been updated with a new letter from Creative Director Chris "Joppa" Perkins. In it, Perkins discusses a trio of big news updates: Internal alpha #1, a new team artist and the arrival of Unity 5 as the game engine.

Pantheon's internal alpha is focused on checking out levels 1-10 and five different classes including Warrior, Cleric, Rogue, Wizard and Enchanter.

But beyond careful testing, we will be asking more paradigmatic questions like: is the game fun, is it challenging in the right ways, does it feel good to explore, is it exciting to loot a weapon that's a little better than the one you had, is combat paced appropriately, is downtime paced appropriately, does it feel good to fight and slay enemies with a small group/full group -- and the list goes on.

Alpha 1 is the proving ground and primer for Alpha 2, when we will most likely open the doors to the first round of players to experience the game.

Read the full update on the Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen site.

Buckle up kiddies, you're going to see how rewarding a difficult and slow progression MMORPG can be.

Tell that to all the people still playing EQ1 both on the live servers and P99 servers.  As well as the hype around the progression server that is launching next month.

Don't get me wrong.. we are not talking about huge masses of people but a good sized niche following.  I feel there is a small but highly dedicated market for this type of game.

The people rooting for Pantheon are not asking for a mass-market game targeting millions of users. If Pantheon stabilizes with a population of 250K, it will meet most of our expectations.

Well this is the nice thing about a small private studio.  They don't have 500 mouths to feed on the team nor a large studio backing them pushing them to reach the widest possible target audience.  This plus those of us who love the kind of games Brad makes is why this could be what we have been waiting for.

Vanguard never recovered from a poor initial launch, and SOE never had any incentive to push the game.

I believe the devs have already established this is not a main stream MMO whatsoever.    It will be a small community of gamers and apparently they are okay with that.  Because your right, most modern MMO players will last a couple levels then come crying to this site about how horrible the game is.

Not sure if serious.  You mean that game that SOE bought out and tanked to keep that abomination EQ2 alive?  The game they pushed to launch early most PCs couldn't run?  The game that went 7 years without 1 expansion?

Thank you for attempting to give us a world worth calling home, once again. It has been far too long.

I think this is going to be one project worth following. I think it will educate a whole generation of how a game is made, and how milestones are met.

    Pantheon Alpha 1

Brad has always been methodical & builds a solid foundation for his worlds, this is no exception. I think Pantheon will follow the path of early EQ. But on a magnitude that represents populace that is online now, verse 1998-

I see no problems with this game having 500k+ subscriptions by its second year. The game is not billed for the masses, but as a premium MMORPG. Many might flinch at the $25/month, but don't flinch too long, you will be the one missing out. That is, If Visionary Realm can hold true to their word.

If this game can get a solid backing, and true 3+ years of full development, (housing, boats, full crafting, etc) all with full GM's, guides, that Pantheon could easily hold the middleweight belt of MMORPGs. Possibly hitting 2M subs, if they have a full feature release.

Nowhere does it say anything about the monthly cost and if it were to happen that it will be $25/month, then they have lost me as customer for sure. $15/month is what I will pay, no more.

Once again, Brad McQuaid is our only hope. The accumulated filth of all our instances and color coded loot will foam up about our waists and we'll look up and shout "Save us!" and he'll look down and whisper, "This is gonna rock!".

Correct, it doesn't say that, but that is what it will most likely cost. And again, it doesn't matter the monthly price, you will pay it, or be watching on the sidelines. Not like you have a choice, it is either free-to-play kiddy playland, or ante up for a real MMORPG. You get what you pay for and this genre has been stuck doling out children's games.

Again, it is your choice, but don't let a few bucks deter you, it is illogical. (Unless you don't earn an income & rely on others)

Based on the substantial, quality progress this game has made in its development, i finally put my money where my hope is and dropped $150 pledge and i regret not one penny. Not to mention the impressive resumes of the technical team  in the DEV biography section of the Pantheon site. These are serious people clearly dedicated to making a quality product intended for its target audience.  HOT DAMN I CANT WAIT FOR ALPHA ACCESS

I doubt that it will cost $25/month. The standard was set in 1990 and it is a fair price today as well. They will reach low income folks as well. They will lose on having $25/month compared to $15. It's easy math!

If they chose what you suggest, then in this case they will only make the $25/month.

Now, if they will go with the standard fee of $15/month, then they'll get $15 from you and $15 from me. That adds up to $30!

See what I am saying. Already there a profit of $5 just from using you and me. It's as simple as that!
