I would get it if you had a name like Jihad or something more specific towards a religion. We make games were we arm ourselves to the teeth and play soldiers in a war in Irak and just slaughter Arabs with machineguns but AlmightyGod would be considered to be offensive. WOW!

Well I guess I can't judge to much on religious stuff since I come from the least religious country in the world, Sweden. But then again what is something like a religious GM doing in a fantasy world that has never exsisted and banning people for using the name AlmightyGod, it just feels stupid.

I usually use the name Beelzebob which is from Beelzebub and it's in a way religious since Beelzebub is a satanic figure and I thought it would be funny to put Bob at the end insteed of Bub. Strangely enough it's usually ok to use Satanic names or names of any "bad" gods, shouldn't this be even worse?

OP I am on your side on this one, 100%. Strangest thing ever.

I would love the US to be more like Sweden.  Especially in this subject area.  I still can't believe how many people in the US believe in adult fairy tales.

Way back when in Everquest I named my character Hebe, the goddess of youth and cup bearer to the Gods.

I was forced to change it because some uneducated misinformed Jew decided it was a racial slur.

Even though the coalition of  jewish rabbis disagree.

Basically it comes down to when a GM tells you to do something you do it, otherwise...

same GM made a girl named lesbianos pick a new name, she refused...

GM renamed her Pretty Pony Girl.

People unfortunately associate the word "god" with meaning a particular "god". Its kind of funny though. You cant use a name containing the word god, yet you certainly wont see anyone getting in trouble for using a name containing something like Zeus, Thor, Mars, Neptune, etc. They were all gods, and you wont get banned for using a name like that, but better not use the actual word god anywhere.

Hell, I ran a clan for several years with the clan tag god, and was known as kaiser.god. It had nothing to do with religion. It was simply an acronym for Grissa Ost Drauka. some of you may recognize that from the Sword of Truth series, and means "bringer of death". Back then, I rarely ever had a problem being able to use the tag in games, but over the years more and more games have become restrictive to the point where 9/10 times the game blocks the use of the word god in any character or clan creation.

All because of a few morons who cant seperate their real life hang ups from playing in a fantasy world.

Sadly, most of the same idiots who would go crying to a GM about someone using god in your name are also sitting in chat babbling about how high they are, how many times they banged your mom, and how they're a hardcore gangsta and would beat your ass IRL.

"morons who cant separate their real life hang ups from playing in a fantasy world" ....Ironic that this perfectly describes religious people, no video games required.

Honestly I find that name offensive.

I would thank anyone who doesn't see both sides of the coin as moronic. You insult religious people,  with faith do you every stop to think I believe that same irony applies too you. Someone who thinks two rocks smashed together which made an atom and over billions of years these atoms spawn single cell organism which further evolved and multiplied turned into our environment which then made millions of different species of creatures which somehow beget a monkey and a % of those monkey learned to be us, or more appropriately you? That may be verbatim but yeah I find your attitude offensive and your shallow perception even more so. All talk about religious people it's funny I always see the non religious people slandering and bashing other peoples beliefs especially in the gaming world, how sad.

True, but sometimes a name really makes a character. It all comes down to the attitude of the GM present at the time your case comes up. I once made a serpent man dressed only in a half cape and a pair of pants. I named him MenacingTrouserSnake and didn't put anything sexual in his bio. He had a very menacing appearance and the name fit wonderfully. The name stayed for months until some prick complained and I was forced to change it. I settled on a more basic/generic name and moved on but I felt my very creativity had been violated over something that was such a non-issue and all it took was for either one A-hole or one delicate little snowflake to ruin it and for one GM to have a corn cob up their rear to listen to them.

GMs everywhere are just too afraid for their own jobs to let any little thing slide these days. One person out of 50,000 gets offended and it's "OMG, WE GOTTA DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS OR WE'LL LOSE ONE CUSTOMER!!!", while chances are nothing would have happened at all and the customer would have just sulked over it.

Even if you don't agree with my choice of name or my stance about it you must agree that everyone has their own opinions and there's always going to be someone that will get offended at something. If we start to let ourselves become so intolerant of every little thing that offends us then we'll allow ourselves to be governed over by fascist powers. WW2 was fought for a reason. There were enough people willing to die to fight the oppression and intolerance of a few. We must never forget that.

Someone with a character name 'thealmightygod' is something I would tolerate and I would tolerate it because it means almost nothing in the gaming world. I would hope there are enough people out there to see such a thing for what it is and and take the appropriate action required, which is no action because it is such a small issue in the gaming world it isn't worth the trouble.

Naturally there will be those that disagree with me because they have their own opinions and I respect their opinions even if I disagree with them. That's just how the world is. We're free to have our own opinions while others are free not to like them.

I've got a feevah, and the only prescription... is more cowbell.

i do think GM's owe it to the game they represent to be courteous  and welcoming to customers.   I know it's not the case all the time, and we all lose our cool.  Maybe someone had just finished giving the guy a hard time before I logged in.  Dunno.

According to your post he simple told you "Choose a new name."  How much more courteous could th GM have been?  It takes a very sensitive individual to feel like they were treated discourteously because a GM told them to "choose a new name."  What most GMs do under those circumstances is change your name for you and leave directions for you to change the name they gave you later if you chose to do so.

You, on the other hand, quit and uninstalled the game simply because he was not "nice enough" when he told you to change your name?  And you call him sensitive?  And then to top it off you come to a game forum and complain about it?

    /smh

The game you are looking for requiring no PvE completion and where you can just jump in and start mindlessly shooting at people is that way - >>>>

    ... it's called an FPS.

Quit ruining the MMORPG genre with your constant "PvE grind" whines.

I wish more games had stricter rules for lame names.

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

I logged into LotRO to find my characters name had been changed.  With a message that the name was changed because it was to close to the name of an iconic npc used in the game.  Looked like the name filter had missed that one.  Anyways, at least you got asked.  The message went on to say if I didn't like the new name I could purchase a name change in the store.   I still play that character from time to time with the GM given name.  Perhaps someone did complain.  Why would they complain to you knowing that most players would simply put them on ignore.
