Soooo.... Did Wildstar have a sub just to grab money?  Or did they naively believe they could survive with a sub and just realized F2P was a better model?

    Not accusing, just wondering...

They failed, simple as that.  F2P equals failed or cash shop P2W.  It's not what legitimately good MMOs do.

Obviously they thought their game was good enough.  They were wrong.

Blaming their troubles on it being a new IP is disingenuous.  Doing so ignores why so many people that bought it abandoned it.

I personally don't plan on trying it even as F2P.  I'm just not interested in the game they decided to create.

I'd like to try it again, but I know it's going to depend on if I get in the Blade & Soul beta this fall. I think the combat and world is a lot more entertaining in B&S so there's no question which one I'll play, but I'll be curious to see which direction other players will go. I wouldn't mind playing some WS until I can play B&S. I'm kinda burnt out on the rest of the mmo market at the moment, but there's still a lot I'm looking forward to playing.

People left for many reasons: to hard core, requires to much irl time to raid, to hard core oh and uhm to hard core?

I think the game was fine, it did require alot from its players so I am not sure how F2P is going to help them. People that play F2P games tend to be casuals and there isnt anything work th with that but its true.

Well hopefully F2P can help keep WS afloat until it can make improvements. WS lost people for a variety of reasons, a subscription is not one of them imo.

Questing - WS took the worst part of linear themepark questing and said, "Yep, this is what we want." No. Bad. Bad Carbine. If you're going to copy themepark questing, see how it's evolved first. Even WoW has iterated on their own questing style with each new xpac.

Combat - WS has two modes. You either circle strafe or just move slightly out of the way and you don't get hit, or your screen is covered with stuff to avoid. There's no middle ground, there's easy or insane.

Running animations - They suck. Seems like a relatively inconsequential thing, but MMO's ask you to spend a lot of time looking at your character. While combat animations are slick and well done, watching your avatar run is appalling.

Weapon lock for all classes - If a game has a bunch of classes and one or two of them have unique weapons based on class lore, that's cool. Locking weapons for all the classes is meh. Part of RPG's is customization, just look at how popular cash shop outfits are, or transmogrification in WoW or similar in other games.

40 person raiding - Yes, we're all aware that you don't HAVE to do it, but it's the "end game" and what people should aspire to. But guess what? People don't want to do it. I'd rather see 10 or 20 person raids with an optional cosmetic bragging rights 40 person version for people to show off.

Those are the reasons I think WS couldn't maintain a larger population, people will pay a sub when they feel it's worth it. You just can't put out a lackluster product and charge a premium.

No no way FFXIV seem like it's untouch, sooner or later may end up doing the same.

People keep mentioning FFXIV as being some unique game for keeping its sub model, and how its doing better than all others not named WoW...its all relative, not all F2P conversions are equal, and not all subscription only game are equal.....when SWTOR went F2P, it had 500k subscriptions, a number roughly equal to FFXIV....and has many more current players (over 1 million), is the 2nd most played MMO in the West, and almost certainly makes more money. SWTOR was also only released in the west, while FFXIV is both East and West. Id call SWTOR quite a big success.....With that said...Wildstar is no SWTOR....according to Wildstar's last revenu numbers, its sitting at 45-50k subscriptions.... I HIGHLY doubt it will make anywhere near the turnaround that SWTOR has.

I'm going to check this game out when it goes F2P.  Yeah, I never would have considered purchasing the box, so if there are a lot of people like me out there, the population should improve a lot.

The model failed, the game got better overtime, like most mmo when they lunch, was to late with just a sub model only.

FFXIV doing good for it self, it's trying hard to get more sub numbers, it's not much unique then some other mmo's other then it's in a more Final Fantasy world. But people think that mmo that haves numbers or not is not going f2p, how many times we heard that we'll will never go f2p, then end up going f2p anyhow. But I was saying don't bet your money on FFXIV never going f2p if they have too they will, they have a cash shop part of the game, not saying going f2p soon but there making sure if they have too there going too.

you still have to buy the box,and the game is just like all other boring mmo`s.

HAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHA ...... (out of breath) ...

Soooo unextected ... Why is it that no game released recently can keep enough interest to last on subs for a year ?

only whales like WoW and Eve can keep that model.

Mandatory sub model sucks, always sucked.

I'd love to play Wildstar, but as long their will be no easy way to install it on Mac or Linux, I won't. (WoW, GW2 and even FFXIV next month do it, why not Carabine?)

Prior to launch they created a financial model - an equation. They fed in assumptions and it gave them the answer: subs will give you the most money.

    The assumptions proved invalid.

The move to F2P is the cash grab.

Having launched they can't go back and start over so. Maybe F2P might have been better from day 1 but we will never know. They have created a new model and "persuaded themselves" that they will make more money than it will cost to keep the game open.

i for one think the game is awesome i like the goofyness and the combat is really okay all the game needs is more people to play it and some optimization maybe.
  • shawnpatshawnpat Member UncommonPosts: 74
Alot of people who have posted above clearly havent played the game lately, its got a good number of active players and improving more and more.  I'm sure its the 3 million players WoW lost, lol.  I think people are starting to get bored of the easy mmo's out there and are wanting a challenge.  Its a good time to be playing Wildstar ;)  If yer tired of the "stand still and press buttons" combat, come to Wildstar.
  • eury2eury2 Member UncommonPosts: 41

should have went buy to play ...... like eso

not to mention its going F2P but the restrictions are huge

  • fivorothfivoroth Member UncommonPosts: 3,916
I wish them all the best with the F2P launch but I am definitely not playing this game.  Wildstar ran like shit on my PC despite exceeding recommended specs by a long margin and the game was just bland, like really really bland. I don't think I have ever uninstalled a game so quickly as I did Wildstar.

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

This won't change anything for me. I really had high hopes with WS, great cartoony style, active combat, ... but they lost me for silly decision to have only single toolbar (and event his in full somewhere after lv. 20) for active skills, but also for impossible lag in crowded areas and some bugs. Now that all areas are nearly void, no players around, ... one another problem arised, no one around to join for group quests. Subbed back less then one month ago, played for approx 1 week and then left. Probably I'm not going back, at least not for one year or so. And I'm sad for this because game had great potential.

And of course other sub only games such as FFXI and FFXIV;ARR.

Basically, in order to charge a sub, the game has to be really good, otherwise it just gives that more reason not to play the game, unfortunately for Wildstar, whether the game has a sub or not, is not likely to make any difference, having a sub just made the game fail faster than otherwise image

That's why I am still with EVE since 2005 (ok with some breaks). You can't beat a good game, f2p or not.
