new generation ISO view MMO

LuftwaffenLuftwaffen Member UncommonPosts: 101
the MMO market needs a new generation ISO view MMO sure it would be a niche game but a well done sandbox ISO with pillars of eternity GFX would get my money hands down ...... no game since UO has held my interest and player ran servers are just to shady and always seem "off" for some reason

Come august Haven and Hearth is getting a pretty big graphical update.  Individual/Town/City building,  mining, purely open world, incredibly harsh death penalties, brutal PvP(with a full loot/death system that actually makes sense).  Though just doesn't have some things like quests or raids, meaning you're on your own(or on your own with a group).

youTubeDoubler for the comparison.  Make sure you mute sound on one of them, because that sounds silly.

There are some coming out. Tree of Savior and the new Lineage come to mind.

I think it would be great if more isometric view games came out in the genre. I never played Ultima Online in its prime, and EverQuest was my first MMORPG. I've been searching for any game to pique my interest lately, and Das Tal (which happens to be isometric view) is one I found on this site. It's not a traditional MMORPG, and the reasons why are a big draw for me personally. But I like your suggestion/desire for more games with this view/angle. I hope more studios give it a try, and develop unique games in the genre.

marvel heroes, lost ark, lineage eternal ....

I looked at Lost Ark, Marvel Heroes, and Lineage Eternal just now. Based on the descriptions and video footage I watched, none of these will be MMORPGS. Being able to play with a handful of people, or use a central hub with many people and then set out into instanced content is not a MMORPG to me. For the label to actually apply, the game has to have an open world where all players can move freely (even if not grouped with each other). Instances of maps/zones is fine (not desired by me), but none of these 3 titles are MMOs to me. They do all use the isometric view, though.

Would definitely love to see another iso game like H&H released (and the graphic update makes me wonder if it's worth going back to give it some more time.)  I wouldn't toss around the term "need" to describe our want of one, but it's something I'd be interested in trying.

Isometric, especially 2D isometric, is one of the cheapest ways to get reasonably good-looking content into a game (Don't Starve being a great example) which lets a game be limited less by art bandwidth and plunge forward to implement more content than they'd be able to do with a different art style.  This makes it really well suited to DS and H&H style games which are mostly about crafting (and therefore benefit from having a lot of different things to craft.)

Just a matter of labeling. This site, and many others listed all 3 as MMOs.

But again, the important question is whether these games are fun. Do you care more about whether you have fun, or that these games are labelled in a certain way?

nariusseldon, I prefer fun (of course). However, I know that I have no interest in games like these. The "Massively" part of MMORPG is important to me.

and you don't play non-massively games at all? No single player games? No other types of online games?

nariusseldon, I play FPS (Battlefield 4) and MOBA (League of Legends). I think MOBAs are a great genre of gaming, even though I rarely play them. I just dislike the lack of social interaction that I experience. I think most of the socializing takes place in chat lobbies. I don't play single-player games at all. I prefer MMORPGs, because I like the game environments with a lot of other players in it that I can see and interact with. It's just that when I come to MMORPG.com, I'm usually here to look for MMORPG games, and when I see a games in the mix that I don't consider MMORPGs, I suppose it is annoying after awhile.

By the way, I'm not saying those games you listed are bad. I just don't consider them MMORPGs, because of the "Massively" part. I'd prefer if MMORPG.com added more distinct labels in the Game List, so it's easier to distinguish games and filter the list. They've done a great job, in my opinion, adding the other labels they already use. Maybe MORPG instead of MMORPG, or RPG+OM for games that are mostly designed as single-player experiences that support grouping with a few friends. I don't think it's that important, really. I can look at the feature list and then look at any available footage (especially dev commented video) and verify what type of game it is for myself. That's what I've been doing all along.

UO held the interest of many, but Iso/2.5D is barely the reason for that.

What *you* consider MMORPGs is certainly different than the listing on this site, and others. May be that is the problem.

Secondly, there are public zones in the games i listed, and you will see a lot of people in them. In fact, I have to ignore people in those games so I don't have to interact with them. So you may like it (to be fair, i am only talking about MH, because the other two are not out yet).

If you can interact with lots of people, do you care if it is called a MMO or not?

The Witcher has a few features on this site at the moment. I guess MMORPG.com and "some people" now consider it an MMO too?
