I'll preface by saying that I am currently level 23 on my elf priest, so I do have a limited perspective at this point. I have been enjoying the game. The tutorial island and introduction to the game is boring and dry, but the further you get along and the more abilities you unlock the combat starts to make up for that in terms of being fun compared to the boring quests.
I've had some interesting conversations in the chat channels, and I've had some fun playing as a team with other people including running the first dungeon recently, which I thought was a lot of fun. It could have been a little bigger and more complicated ideally, but overall the combat is still unique and fun for the time being.
So I just wanted to know what everyone else thinks of the game, especially opinions on parts of the game I haven't done such as PvP/crafting/etc. According to Polygon it's the 3rd largest revenue generating MMO supposedly making over $100 million in revenue per year. But then when I look at this website for example under "Most Popular games" over the past year it doesn't even make the top 10, and I feel like not too many people here like the game that much, but I could be wrong.
I am wondering if people here feel like TERA is more of a one-trick pony with the combat, and not much else to offer. I'm also wondering if it's true that TERA is making that much money then why isn't the game overflowing with content, or do I seriously underestimate how much it all costs?

Given that this site is filled with posts pinning for the days of EQ1 or UO I would say it is far from the mainstream and games from Asia generally receive far less favorable responses than on some other sites I visit.
TERA gets that high of revenue because they have a strong presence around the world and seems to be doing well in a lot of different markets without really dominating in any one place.
Crafting was completely redone some months ago so I have no idea how it works now.
Imo it's the best PvP you'll find anywhere. The bgs are somewhat meh but the idea that you dodge not based on rng or whether you hit a cooldown but how well you position your character imo makes it worlds better than standard tab target PvP.
Downside is people tend to be gearwhores. Once you hit max level expect to take a lot of flack in random dungeons if your gear isn't awesome... while this happens in all games but it feels particularly more pronounced in TERA.
Edit: Oh yeah, the quests, they're terrible, I don't know anyone who plays TERA for the questing, it's generally something people endure to level. Then again I feel that away about all questing ever except perhaps SWTOR.
imho tera isnt the best mmo, but definitely the best mmo of its kind (meaning action based).
its art style is well done, there is some humor, and the combat is great.

It's pretty simple in my opinion -- awesome combat, but everything else is pretty "meh".
You do know you can change channels to an unpopulated channel to get the monster kill correct?
HOWEVER I definitely want to say that I believe when multiple people attack a mob (especially a boss/BAM) everyone that participated should get credit. If a major change could be made to the game I would recommend that. It has prompted me as a healer to request help for killing a BAM for example, and forming a group and being able to chat and get to know someone which is nice, but there should definitely be rewards for any kind of co-operate activity.
Sort of how I'm feeling, which may be enough to keep me playing or at least coming back, and I do have to say it is visually appeasing as well which certainly helps.--------------------------

They got combat done well, but it's faceroll easy even with the action combat, lmao.
As an archer i can stand there and get hit for like 5 minutes before im in danger of dying.

TERA is such a strange game to me.
Loved levels 10-45
45-60 the grind really set in. Getting grouped for a dungeon was a tedious task. and though the combat is great, you really are stuck with just one build and one class, unless you alt.
60-65 was pretty ok.
65+ (pre-expac) was super grindy. Zone events like Nebula or whatever it was called was fun and Battlegrounds were fun, however it was all about that gear treadmill. In PvP i was SUPER outmatched and did not want to keep dying over and over again to earn a single piece of good gear, then you have to go through the process of enchanting it ++
So yeah, it was kind of fun but really just a lot of work.
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile
I have a love/hate relationship with Tera. I love the pvp/pve and combat. I hate the grind. The grind is absolutely terrible. You can pay for the subscription, but it doesn't help with it at all. you literally have to spend $500 for the best pvp gear... or grind for a year. If you were to grind for 12 hours a day, you could probably do it in about 6 months, but for any normal human being, it's over a year unless you slap down half a grand in real cash.
The entry barrier for competitive pvp is way to high with the gear requirements. The RNG to get the best gear 'renegade +15' is just too punishing. I understand making gear hard to get, and people will argue "if you want the best stuff you have to work for it". But it's not even challenging work. It's just long boring repetitive do the same dungeon 1000's or time (not joking btw on how many times you have to do the same dungeon) for the best enchanted pvp gear. You can get it all right away for $500 by buying stuff in the shop and selling it, then buying up the enchanting mats (tier 6 feedstock+alk) But because of the RNG, it could cost even more then $500.
I have no problem spending money on a mmo. The subscription should be enough. But it's just not worth it.
Love the game, love the PVP, cant justify spending either a year of doing the same dungeon over and over, or throwing down $500 or more depending on RNG.
Dam you tera. I hope blade and soul isn't as bad.

I thought the starter isle was absolutely horrible,i quit the game 3x never getting past that point.
However once i did the game looked a lot better ,problem is the UI is for myself dreadful.It was so bad ,i could not play the game.Now truth is i play/test soooo many games i often forget why i left one game or another.So there i was thinking hmm i don't remember why i left TERA so i'll try it again.Then within 30 seconds i was like ....arg ok now i remember why bah.
Too bad really i think the game at least in the short distance i got into the game seemed like it might be ok enough to stick around awhile.I had the same experience in Aracheage with that overlay map on my screen,i was like /shout for answers to remove it off my screen and since nobody answered i was like screw this brutal design.In an age where we want LESS clutter on our game screen,what idiot system designer would think ,,ok great let's put a giant map overlay smack in the middle of the screen.
UI really makes a huge difference ,i remember when many complained of the FFXI UI even though i thought it was perfect for my play style ,i realize the frustrations.That is why developers need to make a solid customized UI or you will lose a lot of customers.

This about sums up my opinion - I still load it up occasionally just for a combat fix. TERA and Vindictus both do action combat very well - TERA has a much more open world, Vindictus has some amazing physics and graphics.
yeah dude, it's really really grindy unless to plop down lots of money. It really feels pay to win by the amount you have to grind.
I was able to grind out the +15 axe on my zerker, took almost 2 months. this is with a subscription, and already having some materials (feedstock and alk) was able to craft the renegade pvp chest, got it to +12, started saving up the 2000 feedstock just to give it the ability to be enchanted up to +15, and started crying after 2 weeks of grinding almost nonstop. I couldn't do it anymore. the same dungeon 4 times a day on 7 characters (lockout limit is only 4 times a day per character with subscription).
Absolutely retarded. The combat is so much fun, but just couldn't do it anymore. just not worth it. Way to much time in one game just to be able to pvp competitively at a much later future date.

How was it boring? The graphically overhauled 2005 combat system was not enough to keep my interest while dredging through the same rinse and repeat archaic styled questing system.
Moreover OP, you should probably stop reading awful blogs like Polygon and collect the data for yourself.

These three names insure that TERA is not even in the top 3, and by all technicality it's not even in the top ten. Polygon is an advertisement blog, in which people go to so that they may be advertised to.
Just so you know you can easily get rid of the minimap overlay by pressing "N" or clicking in the minimap button on the compass on the top right.
I do agree that the UI is way too much and rigid in some areas it should not be. It honestly took me over an hour of tweaking before I got to a point where I was like "I'm not happy with this UI, but I find it acceptable now". And I asked several UI related questions in Area chat that were answered. Also agree the starter area needs a complete rehaul.

It is a great game, beautiful world, good combat, BAMs and boss monster fights are awesome. I found the end game grind (enchanting weapons and so forth) a pain and the pvp is too gear/level dependant. I usually get bored with all mmos for that same reason though so not sure if it is a particular negative in regards to Tera.
Some of the dungeon boss fights are still among my all time favourite mmo experiences.
Edit: Oh yes just remembered- the in game zone chat was some of the worst I have ever read, I remember thinking to myself that the police should investigate all people playing Tera in regards to paedophilia- it was really that bad at times. Never seen anything like it in other games.
And in regards to the Elin or whatever the little girl race is I definitely wish that could be taken out personally, but I try to ignore it. I also stay out of global and I condem the pedos in area chat every time I see a scantily clad Elin ugh CRINGE. Hopefully this crap keeps those creeps on the computer and away from real life entirely.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
Problem is that these are SUPPOSE to be role playing games.If all you do is focus on pvp then the only role i could think of is playing Bin Laden or Attila the Hun.
The problem i always have with the term "GRIND" is that a game has to be boring for it to be thought of as grind.Example vanilla FFXI was super slow xp gains,you would play after work expecting no more than maybe 1-3 levels in a group.However grouping and combat was fun to interesting for me so i never thought of anything as grind.
I feel the biggest mistake a game can do in this era is create altaholic gaming.Every game should be utilizing a sub class system,it allows players to change it up when xp feels grindy by going to play another new class while still improving their same character.Games should make crafting a huge part of the game from farming mats to providing food/drink and weapons/ammo.If players don't want to take part in the plausible realistic life that a character would,then they should not be playing a RP'ing game.
PVP should be a plausible factor in a rp game however it also needs to be done really well for it to work and guess what,it is NEVER done well,so focusing on a weak part of game design is a really bad choice.
