One time I was playing LoL and I got called a noob for the 9000th time and my left eye started to twitch a little and my brain started making this "buzzing" noise.

Welcome to 2006. This is nothing new, all games have turned into this if they have online more or less.

Started with games like CS:1.4-1.6, SC, WC2-3, D2, RUNE, etc, which lead to Dota (WC3 custom game). Then flooded into MMO's like WoW. No doubt it was even in MMO's before WoW. People act like the golden years of gaming this stuff wasn't around. Sorry to tell you, it was. What different between now and then? Millions of people are playing Online games now and every other game has some kind of Voice program in-game.

I'm not even talking about the Console Online generation after they were able to go online.

You can only really get away from this kind of stuff on RP servers of MMO's. Even on RP servers, you'll still run into.

Now add spawn of the Social Media Age on top of all that, this is what you get. You need to look no further then Twitter to see how PEOPLE, not just GAMERS act when they have a monitor and keyboard as a shield.

The problem is much deeper then MMO's. The internet bring out what people really are when chaos without a face is welcomed.

Well Yesterday I tried the free version of WoW to see if I felt like dealing with this monster again, so I started the game, I am level 8 and I am fishing trying to learn the ropes and get the achievement, I am just fishing minding on my own business and this jerk/idiot/dumb guy comes around riding his stupid motorcycle and starts harassing me because I am fishing and no playing the game, what the heck? I am playing the game, I am just learning fishing, he kept coming and harassing me some more, so game deleted. I dont need this crap.

I knew nothing much about Blizzard,i had until Wow seen a little bit but never paid any attention because nothing they made looked worthy of playing it.However it hit me like a truck at how the game drew in the most immature players i had ever seen.My assumption of community changed big time after my original few days in Wow.After that i learned more and more about Blizzard gaming and it's followers and i did not like what i saw.

IMO their motto to make EASILY accessible gaming also attracts EVERYONE,something i was not used to outside of f2p games that until then were only in those cheap Asian games.

Fast forward,Hearthstone, merely a non chat card game, you'd think nothing of it.Well try again, just go into a Forsen chat on Twitch and it's scary ,feels like a bunch of 12 year olds in the school yard.

So although blizzard likes to make games to attract the biggest possible denominator, they also attract the worst people.I know some can overlook that,i cannot,no way can i hang out in a Blizzard game and as of 4 months ago,i no longer play HS nor any Blizzard game.Personally aside from the worst community i find Blizzard game designs to be really weak.

Same here with a long time history of M59, UO slightly and SWG I was completely suprised how people acted when I started to play WoW. It was such a drastic change to what I was used playing with others.

It's was actually WoW that made me start becoming more and more of a solo player.

Unfortunately it's not usually the opposing team that causes the problems, it's your own team.

Also, "just quit their game" is not a good option for some MOBA's.  In DOTA 2, if you abandon too many games you get put in low priority for 5 games.  I don't know if HoTS has a penalty for abandoning a match.

I guess the only other option is to treat your teammates as NPCs and turn off chat. I know there is a reason why I don't like MOBAs .. it depends on others too much.

OTOH, you can play HOTS as a single player games with the AI.

I remember the Lore websites flame wars between AC and EQ wars. I remember the hate shouted at camped spots. It isnothing new you just have more people playing and the more those people directly compet the worse it will get.

Your suggesting playing a game where the core gameplay is working in a coordinated team - by ignoring your team mates - bet they would be delighted.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

If your wanting to play MOBA's then you need to have a thick skin mate, HoTs is child's play compared to LoL and Dota2. I play a lot of Smite which again isn't as bad as LoL or Dota but still you meet some people that will not admit their faults or lack of team play and just blame it on other team members.

It's not just Blizzard games either, its the Internet in general I think lol

Sure you can play most MOBA's against bots.  It's good to practice new heroes or item builds.  I also play against bots when I know I'm going to be interrupted, that way I can pause for ten minutes without disrupting nine other people.  But the bots become predictable after a while.

Well the choices suck.  You either listen to somebody incessantly curse, whine, complain and moan the whole match.  Or you mute them and basically play short handed.  Either way you're probably going to lose unless the other team is just as dysfunctional (which is a distinct possibility).

Unsporting like behavior plays a roll in competitive gaming.

If a player doesn't know how to deal with trolling / insults / trash talking, I believe he/she should quit the game. After everything is said and done it's still a video game and video games are designed to be fun. If you aren't having fun then you shouldn't play these types of games because unsporting behavior will never go away.

With that being said, there are ways to de-escalate toxic gamers. Just agree with them! I know it sounds crazy and if you are a prideful person this is something you wouldn't dream of doing but most of the time it works.

Toxic gamer: OMG! Zod you are the worst player NA

General Zod: You are so right! After this game i'm going to install and never play again.

Toxic gamer: Good! because you might be the worst player on earth!

General Zod: I'm probably the worst player in the universe... Don't worry i'm definitely uninstalling this game along with all my other games. Thank you your insight!

    Toxic gamer: You're Welcome

Part of the reason toxic gamers keep at it so long is because you are going back and forth defending your actions. It's easier to just agree with them and let your actions do all the talking. Trying to keep up with a toxic player responses will actually degrade your game play.

You know you aren't the worst in the universe... just focus and win. You can talk back after you've won the match.

pro tip for casual moba gameplay, NEVER look at the chat box. If you are playing with someone you know, get on a private chat with that person, and forget the game has a chatbox. Play your own way and have fun. Dont pay attention to jerks in chat, if they were SO PRO as they try to sound, they would be playing professionally, not with random people.

Im not a moba fan but i found its more enjoyable when i completely disregard the chat box.

OP, considering you are playing HoS, which is an MOBA (or something close to it), are you really surprised?  I believe most of those games have communities whose nastiness is legendary, and not in a good way.

If you're looking for a truly awful, nasty MMORPG community, might I suggest Tera?  Lol

There's the option to turn off chat at the start of the game by clicking the little "Here" at the bottom of your screen.

If you are aware of what's going on in the game and know what to do then chatting is not really needed anyway.

"after a while" .. so you will have fun before that happens, right? That is something.

Why even care? If you really care what others say to you inside of a virtual world press the block button. I play a bit of HOTS casually for fun and so far the community has been nothing like the rage induced 12 year olds on League of Legends. Get some real life friends to play with you and don't deal with these issues instead. If you play solo or in a pub you have to expect these things. If you are so sensitive that you quit a game over some pathetic grunt yelling profanity your way you're just as pathetic as him.

This is an internet thing. Games aren't even the problem.

People on the internet are socially backwards. We are talking about people that spend the majority of their day communicating through an anonymous platform. Their are no personality check points a long the way on the internet. Even I notice myself acting in a manor that contrasts my real life persona (at times).

Games get it a bit more. Mostly because you have a fueled ego by a sense of accomplishment through games. An accomplishment that most gamers never see in real life.

Ye i wouldn't play a game that pretends to be multiplayer but is really about whoring over each other to be the 'best'.  its like football where every players doesn't give a shit about each other, everyone must score goals and get a medal after every single game or they will be very very angry.  Either design a game for solo play or design it to be multiplayer.

If i join a team, but actually im just in it for myself and don't give a shit about anyone else (regardless of excuse), then i'm the selfish one because for every 2 dicks there are probably 2 decent people who actually do want to play in a team in a non selfish manner - you are part of the problem in effect.  If a designer creates a game that rewards this behaviour then who would have a high opinion about that?

I am used to the usual nastiness in World of Warcraft (WoW), but never expected to see it to this degree in Heroes of the Storm (HoS).

Yesterday, i was in a League match and this one player who I can say was the nicest player I ever ever came across in any game was healing us. He did such a great job that not only did we win decisively, but it was my best game ever score wise. Everyone gave him kudos for his team play and friendly persona. Well, I made him a friend and we grouped up for our next match.

Well, as anyone who plays HoS knows, there always seems to be someone with Disconnect issues (DCs), or lag, or other issues that are all Blizzard bugs. Case in point, for the first time ever I had so many DCs and lag in Hos around 4pm that I had to stop playing. of course, i was tagged as a leaver...but it was either that or just watch the DC screen with its server 'ahead" message and timer. Also, players were getting stuck with Heroes in the selection screen for League play that they didnt choose.

Well, my poor new friend who was the savoir in our last game, got stuck with a Hero he didnt pick and was not good at playing.

He warned the team of this, and even apologized in advance, but still said he would try his best.

Unfortunately, this kind of honesty might fly in other games but NEVER in a Blizzard game with its toxic player base!

Two players began to flame him over and over and over, I tried to defend him pointing out how great he was in previous matches, and to "layoff" as he got stuck to a Blizzard glitch, with a Hero he didnt select or was good at playing at.

BAH! They began to flame me and I was actually playing quite well.

This poor guy logged off after the game and didnt come back.....I had a sour feeling in my stomach and lo and behold 2 hours later when I was in a match as a "Healer" (Uther), I was in 2nd place to whatever that silly fish hero is called.

Someone in the group said to attack something, so I obliged and did, gut to my amazement the rest of my team did not attack as ordered. Oh well, no biggie...so I made a joking comment "LOL I attacked as you ordered but then realized I was the only one that did"...it was a light hearted comment....

MAN! I got ripped a new one saying I was a bad player a weak link etc etc etc, and I was in 2nd place in scoring as well as healing.

As a result, my block list recieved its first members...

Later that night, my wife told me I looked agitated and wasnt myself...to which I realized was true.

As a result, I uninstalled Heroes of the Storm....

I play games for fun and enjoyment, but when a player base seems to go toxic for certain games more than others, I make a decision that I dont want to be a baby sitter among a bunch of spoiled brats getting peanut butter and spit balls thrown at me.

Let these kids parents do that, as i have more important things to do, and better games to play with great player bases such as LOTRO and ESO.

I guess I made a good decision, because I read the reviews this morning on HoS ...a 6.5 out of 10, for many reasons design wise i already knew about.

Thus, I am glad to be rid of that game and its toxic WoW kiddie player base of rotten spoiled brats

I was in beta for HoS and i have to agree with you even back then the playerbase was to toxic and to be total honest that is one of blizzard biggest problem now days is the playerbase which make the lose older playerbase to other game and yes LOTRO and ESO have 100 time nice playerbase "i know i play ESO myself" and GW2 have better playerbase.

And it is sad to see other player get off but flame other but as my folks use to say "As you know other you know yourself" mean basically you flame other for you yourself are not that good and it is really sad to read about your friend i hope you talk to him again for as you say people like him is rare to found today.
