I'm finding having to find skyshards turning me off from this game. I have the console version, and I don't have a PC to look at maps to get the locations.
Finding skyshards in ESO is a reward for exploration. Each skyshard grants 1/3 of a skill point. Main story line quests reward skill points, you gain a skill point when you level, and gain one for each PvP level you acheive.
How important they are depends on how many skills you wish to have access to on that given character. If you would like to have access to many skill lines and passive abilities early and quickly you benefit from skyshards immensely. If you just have one or two weapon sets you wish to use and have no intention of crafting, you can get by without hunting them down at the beginning but you will most likely find yourself going back to look for more later.
My recommendation would be to play through any given area as you want. Explore as you like, get the ones you find and when you are done with a zone and about to move on, pull up a map on a tablet and swing back through the zone to pick up the ones you missed. You may also find places and quests that you missed the first time through which can be fun as well.

You don't have to. Skyshards are not vital to your character.
You have it on a console. An inferior piece of antiquated technology and are trying to multi task on it. STOP go buy a gaming rig, and then add mods, and multi task to your hearts content

In a single player game, I would agree, but in an MMORPG, whether or not it is integral to character development depends upon the expectations of the playerbase. If the majority of the playerbase collects all the skyshards than it is a requirement by proxy.
Eh I do not look up where they are, I just get them when I find them. It seems that there are more than enough points without skyshards for you to have your class abilities, two weapons, and armor.

How important is it to find all the sky shards?
It's important. ESO is all about getting skill points to put into unlocking active abilities, the morphs of those abilities and passives. And you get those with skill points,
Every time you level or gain a new PVP rank you get one of those but those are not nearly enough for all the points you'll want to spend to get the abilities you want/need for playing and crafting.
The other ways of getting those skill points is quest rewards for some quests - the overall main story line quests and the main story quests for a zone, you get one the first time you go through a 4-man dungeon, when you kill the "group challenge" boss in public dungeons (one per zone) and for every 3 skyshards of which there are >300.
So especially at the early levels when you're very skill-point starved, you definitely want them. On the PC there are addons that show the locations but for the console you'll have to google skyshard maps that show you the location if you don't feel like playing the find the skyshard through hints mini-game,
PS.. In case you didn't know, the PC and console locations are the same.

You dont need to use a map for sky shards you will get plenty by simply questing, doing etc but it's a nice incentive along with gathering and chest hunting for exploring (don't use a nap though that turns it into a chore).
If you look at skyshard achievments you get a nice hint to where they are btw.

The solution here is simple.
