I do think the expansion should come with 1-2 free char slots. Because by now most people have maxed out the free slots. With a new class added and paying $49.99 for an expansion, I think the extra to buy a extra char slots is a bit much. That being said, for a game thats B2P, $49.99 is not a big price tag. WoWs WoD was $59.99 + a sub.
I do think it was cheap of NCSoft to make a sale on the box prices only to announce a few weeks later people who buy the expansion will get the rest of the game for free. Thats a bad move. Seems underhanded IMO.
Love the people on here ignoring the actual points that the OP made because they're too busy defending Anet from every possible criticism. Even though his points are actually pretty reasonable and not at all "entitled".
First and foremost, the OP is protesting the fact that the expansion cannot be bought separately. Which is a legitimate complaint for anyone who already owns the base game, because they don't NEED another copy of the game they already own. And as you can't gift the extra copy to someone else, it's ultimately a useless bundle deal for vets of the game. I know the goal is ultimately to bring in new players rather than cater to their existing ones, but they would be better off offering a separate and slightly cheaper "upgrade" package for people who already own the game, or by offering some other perk to people who already own the game if they spend money on the existing package. That way they don't tick off existing players by effectively charging them for a game they already own. It doesn't even have to be a BIG discount, just like $10 or something.
Second, the OP is pointing out that a recent sale dropped the price of the game and convinced a lot of people to buy....only for them to turn around and offer the base game effectively for free with the new expansion. That's kind of a dirtbag move and it's fair for people to get angry about it. If I knew I could just save my money and spend a little bit more to get both the existing game AND the expansion, I'd obviously do it, and I'll bet most of the people who bought the game during that sale would agree. But, again, this boils down to there not being an option to buy JUST the expansion for a little bit cheaper.
Third, the OP is pointing $50 for the expansion (and if you already have the base game, that's really all you are wanting to buy anyways, an extra copy of the base game is useless to you) with a $75 or $100 price on the "Deluxe" or "Ultimate" editions is actually pretty pricey when you consider it by comparison to most games. Most game expansions don't cost that much, with the only noted exception being WoW (and it could certainly be argued they're offering more than GW2 is, though the price is still too high even with that said). It's certainly pretty pricey in an age where so many MMOs are moving to F2P models, and it might make the sell a lot harder for ANet that they're asking a price comparable to WoW.
None of these points are unreasonable ones to make. The only people being unreasonable are the ones who cover their eyes and ears while defending ANet on this, not actually listening to the points being made and resorting to the age-old "if you don't blindly agree with everything the devs do, then you're entitled" mindset. It's why I insist to this day that GW2's players are among the most overly defensive player bases out there. It's just silly.
Thats because your and his points are just BS.
First and foremodt 50$ is price of HOT. Theres no "separate" or "non-separate". Youre not getting another copy of GW2. ANet is so kind to just include base game into the package for NEW players.
Second, people who bought it for 10$ and played it for few months now have 0 right to complain. In fact YOURE doing complaining for them and didnt see any notice of appointment youre their spokeperson. Means youre just speaking out of your a**. If tehy like it theyll buy the expansion, if not they wont, its THAT simple.
Third. Price of expansion is in line with other games which cost from 40-60. See, right there in the middle. GW2 is B2P game, WOW is P2P game with box price and cashs shop. Just like othe P2P games mentioned. Incomparable. Free games are free games. GW2 is not F2P game either.
GW2 playerbase is not "overly defensive" its just that GW2 trolls are just most stupid and funny.
Oh yea, they could throw in characer slot, as that would actually mean anything to people like OP and other trolls. Which came out of the woodwork, like everyone knew they would. Its been quite long draught for them.
It will be most funny when they start saying they bough expansion "to try it out and that its still worst game EVAH"
it is fun to see this guy desperately trying to defend anet , even if they are wrong ...
It does seem a lot like fraud when saying you need to buy base in order to play, then offering a sale, then including the base with the purchase of the xpac.
I am so glad I quit GW2 after about 6 months. It had amazing potential, but A-Net continuously breaks it promises and under delivers. Look at the expansion coming for FFXIV compared to HoT and you will see what a true expansion is.
Originally posted by FomaldehydeJim I won't be buying this since I don' care for the game; but if I were going to, the price point seems about right. You have had three years of a B2P game with free content updates and now you expect a discount on the expansion because you already own the base game? Entitled much?
I do, I already own the base game, people coming in get the perks, while people who have pumped money into their gem store for years pay the same and get no perks like an extra character slot to play the new class. If that isn't enough of a stick in the eye, they put the base game on sale a few weeks ago to get new people in for the expac, then they put it in with the expac....to remedy the issue they re now offering expac only upgrade, but only to people who bought the base game during the last sale. So call us entitled all you want, I say we are just smart consumers, and a good deal this is not....so I'm not giving them my money....simple enough?
So you are annoyed that a product has reduced in price three years after release and you are not refunded the difference? I don't know what to say... Do you try to take your television back to the store for a refund three years after you bought it??? Your clothes, your furniture, your car???
I've been on these forums long enough to see what you are attempting to do, and I'm not in the mood to argue about this with some noob. I posted my opinion and you're welcome to yours. Not sure why it bothers you that I as well as a majority of actual GW2 players disagree with the pricing scheme of this expansion, but I really don't care. It's not worth the price, deal with it.
FomaldehydeJim did a great job pointing out what type of consumer you are. Sadly you are that consumer.
$50 for exp after 3 years of B2P is a pretty damn good deal. I can't wait! They can have my money any day.
Get off your sense of entitlement ANET doesn't owe you anything.
Originally posted by DanitaKusor Even worse, they had a lot a "get ready for Heart of Thorns" sale where they reduced the price of the base game, only to turn around a few weeks later to give it away for free with the expansion. Anyone who bought GW2 in the last few weeks got seriously ripped off.
Is that for real? Buying the expansion will now give you the base game for free?
Yeah it's a bit deceiving considering how recently they dropped the price.
Regardless, it's not a big deal. Struggling MMO's do it all the time to attract new players
I don't get it... you're mad because you bought the game and played for free otherwise for years and they aren't giving out freebies to those who have?
Man, it's heartwarming to see all the GW2 fanboy white knights out in full force again. Brings a tear to my eye.
As for the topic at hand, the $50 price and lack of goodies for veteran players isn't the real issue here. GW2 is a b2p title that depends on cash shop and expac sales to make money so they're free to charge what they want and people who have been playing for the past 3 years have already gotten their money's worth. If you think it's too much and doesn't offer enough value, don't buy it or wait for a sale. It is, however, kind of shady to have sales on the base game to entice new players to buy in anticipation of the expac, then turn around and offer the base game as part of the expac price, effectively forcing them to pay $60+ instead of $50.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

If that's the case those payers can take it up with Anet.
Many have forgotten that Anet has refunded players who were unhappy with the game when it was released. What gaming company does that?

Could Anet have handled the expansion better? I believe so, but that doesn't automatically make it a ripoff, nor some great travesty. Compared to most expansions offered by other MMOs, this is a fair deal. Note that i said 'fair', not omg amazing, and not complete crap, but just about average. And that's really the issue isn't it? People aren't okay with 'normal', they want an expansion that is such an amazing deal that even people who hate the game are tempted to buy it.
Personally, I'm still on the fence about this one. I do hope they change some of the things (like the character slot), but I don't think the price model is greedy at all. It's 100% normal. And when you consider that the game is also B2P it's more than fair.
My issues come more from a stance of I want to wait to see exactly how all the features are going to play out together before I buy into the hype machine. They keep saying there's a ton more stuff not revealed yet. But as has been mentioned in this thread Anet does have a habit of underdelivering on stuff.

And I believe that is what the OP is stating. Why does everyone need to resort to calling the OP entitled because he is voicing his opinion. It's total bullshit and if people have a problem with this, don't respond or just say say you don't agree. But trying to invalidate his opinion by saying he has a sense of entitlement is unnecessary.
One of the biggest barriers to growing a playerbase with an established game is the entry price. If a new player has to buy the game and the every expansion to date (+/- a sub)... It puts them off. Anet know that and have thrown it all in for one price. As for the expansion itself, I personally feel it should have been priced on its own but I can see that it adds value for the new purchaser.
A character slot would have been nice, though.
There is NO miracle patch.

It's really just another buzzword at this point as devoid of mean as synergy or innovation.
My only concern is what kind of content is behind this 50$. So far we have to little to justify. At release that had announced what were going to get before announcing the price.
I will wait more info on the content before buying it. Ya Know... EA/Ubisoft taught us so much about pre-orders.

Uh, pretty much every game on Steam can be refunded now. I'm pretty sure if I cared enough to look I could find other examples as well.
Awesome for them seeing how it was just started. Like that hasn't stirred any controversy with game developers.
Maybe I should be a douche bag and get a refund on all the games I have completed. Seems pretty acceptable,
I think the Steam refund is only good if you've played under a certain amount of time, like say 2 hours. Oh, and EA has had a refund policy in place for awhile now. Let's say that again. EA will refund your money. EA. Kind of makes ArenaNet's refunds not as big of a deal as you seem to think.
"You may return EA full game downloads (PC or Mac) and participating third party titles purchased on Origin for a full refund. Refund requests can be made within 24 hours after you first launch the game, within seven days from your date of purchase, or within seven days from the game’s release date if you pre-ordered, whichever comes first. And if you purchase a new EA game within the first 30 days of its release date and can’t play it due to technical reasons within EA’s control, you can request a refund within 72 hours after you first launch the game instead of 24"
Edit: Here is part of Steam's refund policy:
"Valve will issue a refund for any reason, if the request is made within fourteen days of purchase, and the title has been played for less than two hours. There are more details below, but even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway and we’ll take a look."

I don't see entitlement, I see years long supporters getting screwed. If Anet offered the expansion only without the base game included for all current GW2 owners at say 29.99 or even 39.99 then ok no problem, but to charge $60.00 for the base game + expansion to people who ALREADY own the base game is a big problem.
It is nothing but greed. Maybe they will before the expansion goes live offer an upgrade for a cheaper price and if they do then that would be good and most likely will help calm things down.

See, I don't have an issue with the $50 price. People who have been playing for months or years have already gotten their money's worth from the base game. I never got a character to even level 40 but I still feel I got my money's worth even paying full price. As I mentioned earlier, if you think $50 is too much, then don't buy it or wait for a sale.
