[Preview] Blade & Soul: E3 2015: Free-to-Play Wuxia Action - The Business Model Revealed

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Chinese Wuxia genre is one of the most celebrated martial traditions in modern films and video games, and Blade & Soul, a new free-to-play MMORPG from NCSOFT, looks to put that genre on center stage.  Blade & Soul, which will launch with a fully realized, three-act story at launch, will feature high-level, competitive PvP, with hardcore features like a 1v1 arena in which gear will be equalized to promote player skill.

I just hope the realize one day that many western players enjoy Asian MMOs and they do not have to keep treating us like children and dumbing down and changing all the asian titles they bring over here.

I hope you all hyped up the devs in regards to Blade and Soul.

They have no excuses here not to deliver an amazing game (and preferably to do it as soon as possible!). :D

I'm not a fan of "pre-order packs", and I very rarely buy them (and even then I buy the cheapest if it is <20$), but I'll admit I'll jump the gun and buy the most expensive this time probably. Still, hope the pre-order packs are just 100% cosmetic, don't want to see any "refining stones" or "loot rolls" or "gear tickets" or whatnot in there!

We'll pay $100 for sparkles, they should be happy enough with us idiots doing that!

You might to tone down on the hype before playing the game. BnS is a pretty shallow game with great combat, customization. After the initial excitement you are left with a grinder.

I liken it to TERA, and in a good way. A lot about it may be traditional, but that's not a bad thing. It's got a great story, great combat, and it's gorgeous to look at. Nothing wrong with that.

Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

If the combat is good enough, a shallow endgame isn't that big of a deal.  Particularly for a f2p title where you can just "finish" the available content and then drop it until more comes along if you want with no monetary investment.

Marketing isn't a bad thing if it's "honest marketing".

Or to put it in a different way, "extravagant" or "intense" marketing isn't bad if everything that is being offered is what you are getting.

If the marketing is exaggerating the product then that's bad.

After all, if I didn't know about the game and I read your response I would say "sign me up!"  you just "Hyped" the game for "me".

Exactly.  If nothing else TERA has proven that an MMORPG can be a success with fun active combat and beautiful graphics alone.  TERA is, of course, much more to many players but BnS improves on what TERA offers in almost every way.

Gear equalized to promote meaningless gear and boredom.

Games really need to stop making gear pointless I do challenging content to get a great bit of gear only for it to be pointless when it matters.

In PvE sure.  PvP though?  No.  Keep it competitive.  Not about who grinds the most.

Classic case of different strokes for different folks.

Some players are PvP players and their best solution for them is gear with no stats so as to keep things competitive.  Some players are PvE players and their best solution is horizontal progression in which the best form of progression is based on customization and non stat gear so as to avoid the gear grind.  And then you have the hamsters.  These are the players who are always willing to jump on the hamster wheel for that glorious +1 stat not realizing that all it does is render all prior gear iterations non-void and creates an impossible climb for new players who may have joined the game at a much later time.   What this in effect does is what is happening to FFXIV as we speak.  All beginning content now needs to be dumbed down to lessen the journey to ex-pack levels.  Of all three strokes, the last stroke is by far the worst. Hamster wheel gear grinds in MMORPGs need to go the way of the do-do bird for the genre to progress.

I really like BnS, It's a blast to play. I stopped playing on the foreign servers though since the announcement.

The pve is what you'd expect from an MMO, but the combat is fantastic and it has an atmosphere and style that make you want to stay. Especially if you're into anime and kung fu movies like me. =P

Asian mmo: Usually turns me off.

    NCSOFT: Definitely turns me off.

Yet I still likely will try the game. It does the anime look well without going WAY over the top like some games. I'm a huge fan of eastern themed RPG and often include it our RPG games. I am hoping it is decent fun if only for a while.

    You stay sassy!

Being a competitive gamer myself and been through the ringer when it comes to competitions/tournaments I think it's great that MMO's are now offering an equalized field for people to be competitive, skill SHOULD triumph over gear. The whole mentality of "I spent 500 hours getting this gear I should destroy you" or "I spent $500 getting this gear I should destroy you" shouldn't even come into play when it comes to PvP. PvE is a different mindset IMO, PvE time=/=progression, PvP should always be skill to progress and not who has more RNG enchanted gear to dominate the field.

NCSoft ripped out my heart when they closed City of Heroes then crushed it again with WildStar. I don't care how good this MMO is, I cannot trust that publisher and will not give them more money.

I'd rather buy a game from Steam's Greenlight store, one of the ones Jim Sterling lampooned.

I played CoH/CoX since it launched, always had a blast and was upset when it was closed, reasoning for it? Will never really know. As for Wildstar, I blame Carbine for that one. They were over-zealous with a very mediocre product and 90% of the community saw through their BS.

I haven't been tainted by prejudice for NCsoft yet so I just play whatever games I come across lol

Played both Age Of Wulin and B&S , one is Flying Daggers and the other is KungFu Pander. Oh and I'm not talking about the US version which was a mess.

I hadn't heard anything good about TERA and my guild (who is in just about every MMO under the sun) doesn't really have any official presence left.  I played in the beta but wasn't impressed. Maybe I should check it out now.  Anyways, I'd much prefer a traditional MMO to pretty much everything released in the last year.  I'll throw a sub (or whatever you want to call monthly membership) at B&S as long as I'm enjoying it.

The combat is probably the best of any mmo but Blade and Soul best feature to me is story. The characters and events have meaning and it keeps you wanting to see whats next. Been waiting years for this one so I will pre order.
