A game with so many people being enthousistic cant be bad! Can it?
i never got past level 10 at open beta, mfinding combat to static, and quests not engaging enough..
which keeps me wondering what attracks the current player base to this game?
what feaurures make it unique and stand out?
and what makes this game fun for them to play?
- if you had to compare it to other MMOs which would you choose?
(also wondering if it will be possible to catch up after the expansion releases, and if there will be any people left to group with in the old comtent while leveling and preparing for the expansion content)
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I was like you and quit after level 10 at first. The truth is the early game is VERY slow. The game is designed from the ground up for the absolute beginner. So for us MMO vets the start seems simplistic. Don't worry, they go by very quickly. It's the price you pay for not being a noob. I am level 30 and there are still features that are just now unlocking for me. There is so much in the game they don't give it to you all at once so they don't overwhelm the beginner. So, to get a true feel for the game, play it more. Once I got past the early 20's I really fell in love with it.
What do I like about it? There are so many unique game mechanics and every one of them are so polished and unique. For instance last night I came upon the quest that allowed my mount to be a companion that fights for me. You can choose a branch for it so that it is your tank, healer or DPS. That's in addition to my pet that I can ride in races.
If I had to pick 3 things it would be the uniqueness of some of the things to do, how well they are implemented and the community. I have never had a negative experience with the community.
As for it being too late, it is absolutely not. Queues still pop on every level of instances. There are still a LOT of people around. They have actively designed the game so that people don't get left behind the mass and have done an excellent job of it.
For me, it was 2 things:
1. The Final Fantasy Logo
2. The graphics
That is what got me interested, as I began to play other factors kept me playing, such as:
1. The nice atmosphere
2. The story quest
3. How well done it was
4. Players
As opposed to other MMOs I didnt feel rushed to reach endgame, it was nice to go slow and enjoy the scenery and I think this game rewards people for doing so. However, outside of these things I couldnt find much incentive to play. Compared to other games on the market it has better graphics, is less buggy, and feels worth it. You might like it, you might not. After playing for a while I'm taking a break, as I'm not very impressed with HW and even if I did buy it theres nothing that immediately demands I get it.
1 - Story, Main and Side, all Fantastic
2 - Character progression
3 - GOLD SAUCER
4 - FATES make sense, not just random dumb shit. You can actually follow npc's to FATES and they lak along the way and everything. Pretty cool.
5 - Very well done dungeons. Even love how the Hard modes are NOT the same dungeon with higher diffuculty. It's actually a continuation of the first normal dungeon. Even the dungeon changes layout and how it looks and feels. Even music too.
6 - FLYING !!
7 - Triple triad
8 - DX 11
10 - I'm in the best FC in the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HL4d8cXn-Q
11 - This is long. The feels. I am 30 years old and have only really cried when my kid's were born and all but the story, well. Last night, we lost someone in game, ill not say who, but, I literally had to WALK AWAY for a minute to compose myself. The main story suck's you in so much that you just fall in love with it.
12 - The community. i'll explain. I'll come in game with all intentions to get some shit done, but, after a while I realize I was sitting aroung chatting for over an hour. I was having THAT much fun in chat in a game. BTW that has never happend to me in other mmo's.
Dude I could keep going but I think i may just make a video of everything that is great about this game.
Now the negative:
1 - After 50 jobs get NO traits. WTF?
2 - DRG gear is meh at best past 54. They start substituting crit for Skill Speed but apparantly Skill Speed does something now I guess.
3 - The new Heavensward areas are HUGE. Running on ground before being able to fly is a pain in the ass.
I have more but the are so miniscule that it honestly does not matter.
But thats it for me and me only. I can't say how anybody else will feel.
nothing really makes it stand out. it does the same thing as many have done before. it doesn't do it better and it doesn't do it worse. and i suppose that's all it needs to do.
other devs could probably learn a thing or two from this
I had fun once, it was terrible.
XD
It's a very well polished Theme Park MMO with a Final Fantasy Skin, with a decent story.
Honestly, theme park mmo's have been bad since WoW and when there is another good one, it's like it's the best mmo.
If you compare it to itself, then ho hum.
If you compare to half the stuff getting released and supported,it's like a 11/10.It all depends what you call value for your money.I tend to lean towards a game that at least looks professional,99% of the games out there all look like some kids made them for a school project.
No question the combat is what i call "not good enough",then again compare it to other games where combat doesn't even matter, then it is opinionated. How much combat do you NEED in a linear questing game,NONE.This game actually does challenge you a bit ,even in the solo cases...sometimes but then again other games you are not challenged ever with the quests.
So it becomes a game about the small things like perhaps that instance boss or graphics, etc etc.
Again gamer's should compare,Wow for example the biggest supported game ,is still using ancient game engine and graphics, also has no housing, does that sound like a developer has made multi millions and put some kind of effort back into the game, not to me it doesn't and that is how i judge what i support and don't support.
To be honest,i am seeing a slack effort right across the board, developers have stopped investing int other games and just looking for quick money grabs, gimmicks and most of all, seems more effort goes into the cash shop.Sadly even Square is using a cash shop inside of FFXIV now.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Nothing makes it stand out really. Bought it on sale a few days ago and I personally think that it is pretty boring and will probably not resub after my 30 days. I should maybe have done more research, but I dont like:
- much of the semi asian art and style (wtf just look at the archanist pets)
- the long global cooldown
- all those fucking talk to this person quests
Have been playing both ff and gw2 now the last week, and must say I prefer gw2 atm, but at least its b2p and its easy to put away a while and go back too later
Its a fantastic, well designed, traditional MMORPG. Merely that, and nothing more. That alone, however, makes it stand out in a sea of today's bastardized F2P MOBA/FPS simulated cash grab "in name only" MMORPGs.
My experience nearly mirrors Tacboys, read the hype at launch , jumped in played to 12 , it just didnt grab me .. walk away for a year i think .. then just kept reading all the glowing player experieences .. So dug in and got into the 20s... Have never looked back .. great MMO in everyway .. Im at 50 now and just casually making my way thru 2.55 to Heavnsward , am in no hurry to rush any of this well crafted World/Story/Lore or Crafting .. 28 fishing .. 30 Culinarian ... 15 leatherworking..
And it will be no trouble at all moving thru lower content and have groups for content...
Sounds like a community has settled in nicely. :-)
I have read something like this before and honestly I don't buy it. I gave my friend, who had never played an mmo before, FF14ARR and after an hour he gave up. I asked him why he said something like "I can't even figure out how to fight". Next I bought him ESO, a game which has no real hand holding quests and he never looked back. After a month he was telling me how to play, figured it out all through the game and from talking to other players.
The game may well pick up at later levels, but it is boring and somewhat confusing at low levels, whether you are a "mmo vet" or a complete noob.
^ this...It's the same for me. I hardly run into any immature folks. People are friendly, mostly. People seem to want to group.
I quit very quickly when I started playing, but I've added this to my MMO rotation of ESO and SWTOR. I have been playing FFXIV mostly as of late and the levels seems to go by pretty quickly, mostly because I enjoy the dungeons and trinity.
I've played this mmo off and on since ARR launch. It is a very well made mmo. The start is a bit slow. But, as some have said it does pick up. The global cooldown is not as slow once you actually get your hotbar filled up with abilities. The only real complaint I have is having to finish the 2.1-2.55 content before reaching the expansion.
I came back at the start of early access. I had done a tiny bit of the post 50 content (prior to the expac). I spent literally all my early access just clearing through that content. The story was good, but the 100s of fetch this and that and talk to this guy and that really tired me quickly. After finally getting to Ishgard, I went and got my Dark Knight job. That job starts at level 30. So, I spent another couple days endlessly grinding fates and dungeons to get to 50 to finally start the expansion. So, basically about a week after I had access to the expansion, I finally got to see the expansion lol. This was with at least 4 hours per day of game time.
I have played mmos since the late 90s. So, I'm familiar with grind. But, this is honestly the first newer mmo expansion I've played that I wasn't able to get into the expansion right away. I honestly see this as a burden many mmo players will absolutely loathe. It will definitely turn away a lot of new or returning players.
The one thing that is absolutely true is how nice the community is. I have literally only run into maybe a couple idiots in game since the launch of ARR. Majority of players are mature and usually helpful. You don't see the insane trolling in general chat like in Tera for example (I love Tera, so not bashing the game). In fact, I have rarely seen any trolling. Surprising since you share the servers with console gamers (no offense, just a lot more younger gamers on consoles).
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
FFXIV has one of the best stories on the market atm in my opinion. I loved running the main quest - they make it feel it's all about you and your buddies instead of telling you the stories of other people where you participate. That made it stand out for me the most. Besides that, they offer very well done dungeons and group content in general. The Soundtrack is marvelous, too. I had a blast in raids too - they offer a variety of great mechanics.
Downsides: Of course the combat. It feels very simplified at times - i was able to fix that by playing a Dragoon. Back at launch with lvl 50 i ran a 7 Skill Base rotation in combination with priority skills, as for buffs, fillers and dots. Totalled at about 13 Skills i used while bossfights.
The uttermost downside it had back then was the endgame grind. Had to grind a single dungeon for 40+ Times just to get to the raidcontent. Meh.
Did not keep me playing for too long, but i started again, and iam really enjoying the story i've missed the past year or so.
