Star Citizen: Game On #69 - Derek Smart Speaks Out on Star Citizen

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

This week on Game On, Chris sits down with Derek Smart to talk about the troubling state of Star Citizen. Derek has worked on similar games for 20+ years and shares his unique perspective on why he thinks the game will never release the way it's being promised and, more importantly, why he's waging a war for accountability. This is an interview you won't want to miss.

I find it funny that you'll go after a crowd funded game for "accountability" but won't go after EA or Ubisoft for the shit shows they put out. This game has had currently 1/4 the development time and has been FAR more transparent then say AC or BF or WDogs. It may not release as what they want but could turn into it over time.

This is getting ridiculous. Why does this persons opinion carry so much weight here. Agenda much

This is about more than just Star Citizen.  That much is obvious.  However, it's good that they are being invited to this level of scrutiny.  At 85 million crowd funded dollars, it is an unprecedented phenomenon.

In the very best light, Derek might be viewed as a whistleblower.  History will tell the rest.

So the guy famous for starting the largest flame war in history is trying to do that again to gain exposure to his craptastic games?  This man is a nasrcisstic, antagonistic, hypocritical never-has-been game developer.  In case he forgot one of his games was marred by some of the very same issues he's condeming CIG and Star CItizen for, go figure.

If you believe CIG should answer for what's going on then go ask them about it, don't post articles about Derek Smart every damn week. Derek Smart isn't where this story is, CIG is where the story is.

CIG has already refunded this guy his money and he no longer has a account in SC. This idiot makes accusations all the time, he literally said the same thing about SOE and planetside 2 when that was getting a bunch of hype. And his game is still not out. And if you look at his website he literally copies over every other video game character, he even has master chief on it. Why are you giving this idiot the time of day on this website.

Here is his crap game http://lodmmo.com/

Look at it. he literally copied master chief, the Vanu, and Deadshot.

It does not matter about what Derek Smart in the past on other games in regards to Star Citizen.

He brought up a slew of very good points about things that seriously need to be discussed and instead of coming at him with data and a voice to combat what he is saying... they choose to refund him his money and not give any type of response. He deserved a response because at the time he was a backer, no different than anyone else. It is just that he laid out alot of points in very direct and thought out and put together manner that star citizen crew got scared.

At least politicians would say something. Even if you know it to be a lie. Roberts' n crew cant respond because they have no response other than a "heres  another 300$ ship you can buy"

I love how fanboys resort to trashing the guy rather than addressing what he actually says. 85 million dollars worth of suckers who threw money at a bunch of pictures. I've seen posts deleted off of this site that said the same critical things about Star Citizen. This is part of the problem as well. Fanboy sites that shut down criticism and call anything negative "trolling" instead of allowing an actual discussion. There has really been a total lack of accountability in the gaming industry for a long time now. Maybe people are finally getting sick of throwing money and these scam artists. I certainly hope so.

    as i postet elsewhere

Now what i wait for with great curiosity is how SC will solve the equation between the people who pre-paid 4-500$ for a ship and the people who have no intention to grind for 5-10 years to be able to buy it with in-game funds.

I see A LOT of rage in the future when they present the costs of ships ingame.

After all... A living universe needs a steady stream of warm bodies and a few thousand kickstarter and founder people will not be good enough to solve that problem longterm, the churn would kill the game.

My prediction... People will have mortaged their houses for a ship or three that will take a few montjs to grind up to. It will be hilarious.

If anyone can cause a crap-storm in the MMO world it's Derek Smart, and I love the guy for it. I'm sure there are a few people around here that remember the whole alganon game that Mr. Smart was a part of and some of the drama it brought.

    Rock on Mr. Smart!

I'm sure many would be willing to discuss the real issue here. When all of the facts are in...That is the big problem, it's an issue of "transparency". Which means it's about what is and what isn't true. Can you tell me with absolute certainty what is really true here? That means no conjecture, no spin, no what your instinct says, no what  lies between the lines, no what he or she said,  absolute 100% truth?

In the meantime Derek Smart is essentially the story here... It's his word against, which brings with it, opinions on his own credibility..... so what you see is what you get..

The ironic thing is... when journalists question CIG, or even worse, tell other people to question CIG they get called names and told they're not real journalists.

But if they turn a blind eye and ignore it completely, they also get called fakes, and get accused to friend politics.

But you support what EA/Bioware does?

Good example. Before dropping my sub from SWTOR. I bought what like 4 or 5 extra character slots. When they first offered them, because I had hit the cap they allowed for my server JC.  Guess how many of those I have access to after I dropped my sub? None.

    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

There is a huge difference between investigative journalism compared to formulating a clickbait headline. They went after no real facts in that other article they simply reposted Smarts words.

As a preferred player you drop down to 6 character slots + whatever you unlocked. So you'll have access to 10-11 of the 22 character limit. If you had access to none it would mean you were playing a sub only game like WoW, EVE or FFXIV.

Since EA and Ubisoft uses their own money, I believe they have the right to make whatever the hell they want... even when it is absolutely crap/ripoff.

What you are saying is essentially that people has to do what you like even when you don't pay them / not your friends or family / don't mate with them. Sure as hell sounds reasonable there... image
