Hey all!
Would you recommend any MMO out right now?
I've reached that place again, we are all familiar with it, I don't know what MMO to play. I want to play one, I know I do, but I can't figure out which one. Are they all just crap now? I started on DAOC, and I loved it. I can look back and realize the PvE was lacking, the questing was horrid but I still look back fondly. WoW... is WoW, we know what it is. FFXIV... no classes and linear as linear can be, sucks the fun out for me. F2P games (GW2/SWTOR/ESO/TSW), something about F2P just sucks all the fun out of it for me. They always feel unfinished.. or like I am about to be ambushed for money around any corner.
Is there anything I have missed? Is there anything coming out soon?

Some F2P games are much better than others, it really depends on a case by case basis. I understand where you are coming from, I prefer subscription games as well, but the games I enjoyed the most lately were not subscription based.
ESO has received a lot of praise from the players lately. The free-to-play model is extremely unrestrictive to the point where I don't even buy the subscription anymore (even though I always like to do that in games). It has a strong story, rich crafting and is quite unique to most games out there.
GW2 kept me interested for a long time. It has a nice quest system, a nice variety of things to do and an amazing stream of free updates. It is not free-to-play but buy-to-play, so the community isn't outright toxic. It was one of the games that managed to keep a fairly healthy community for a while after launch, something that is not common these days. An expansion is on the horizon, so it might be a good time to pick it up.
Then you have a long range of MMOs that are very similar to WoW. To be completely honest, even though I enjoy the systems, I can't be bothered to pick one of those anymore. I get the "Here we go again." feeling each time I give one a try. Wildstar was quite fun to me, it had a nice world, housing and challenging dungeons, but I am not confident the community is stable anymore.
Lastly, I picked up ARK a few days ago and think it will keep me busy for quite a bit. It is not a MMO, but if you find a group of players, it seems interesting and very different. The graphics look great and is all about exploration. It just so happens that I have been looking for those things and it came along. Possibly not something I'll be playing in a year, but right now it's good fun.
Yes, because you've already decided that they are.
Find yourself a good single player game or something else that you're not completely jaded about yet. And maybe give another MMO a try in a few years from now when time's changed your stance on them.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

If he's comparing all modern MMO's to DAOC (or some of the other original MMORPG's) it's quite easy to see why he feels the others don't measure up, because they just don't.
It really isn't him, it's the games now.
To the OP, have you ever considered EVE?

I have played MMO's since 1999 starting with Biosfear if I remember correctly. But I would not recommend that MMO, it was great for me since it was something completely new on the market back then. But if I may recommend ONE mmorpg it would be SW-Galaxies (Pre-CU). Ofcourse Sony did not really made the right decisions back then. ( this is my being very polite if I could I would kick them in the nuts every day since they screwed up back then untill now and continue till the end of time ).
But there is a EMU out there and it has been crouded and alive forever. I cannot give you the link because I am not sure if I can post such things publicly on the MMORPG fora.
Back on topic!
I recommend this old school sandbox mmo since it's the only decent mmorpg sandbox that I have ever played. ( I just quit Archeage because it lacks what SW-Galaxies had a decade ago ).
Why you should try it out:
SWG is a sandbox mmo that forces people to interact with eachother. You have docters that can hand out buffs and other path's people can choose from to help others. Example: if you go out to farm some monsters you can go to a doctor (not NPC!) that has the rights skills and he or she can give you a stat buff. Entertainers can change the way you look and buff in cantina's.
So what you will see is people hanging out in the cantina to get buffs. Go to the hospital to see a doctor. I will not write to much about it because you can find all of it if you google the SWG emu.
So if your looking for a open world / pvp / farm / social MMORPG and can handle some out dated graphics and have the perseverance to get through the start of figuring things out, give it a shot because I think you will love it.
Have fun !
This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

I think you are over sensitive with regards to F2P. Change your perspective. You are the problem, not the games.
There is nothing inherently more of a "trying to take your money around every corner" than an obligatory subscription just to play. It's your business if you prefer that, but even those games have cash shops now. It's something you just have to come to terms with. I find many of the cash shops completely fine, and only some of them annoying.
