[Preview] Chronicles of Elyria: Soulbound Studios Wants to Bring Meaning Back to MMO Life

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

A couple weeks ago we got a chance to sit down with Indy game studio Soulbound Studios to talk about their new MMORPG, Chronicles of Elyria. Never heard of Chronicles of Elyria or Soulbound Studios before? That’s OK, we hadn’t either. Although you haven’t heard of them before, with an impressive team of seasoned developers and a collection of features even we’ve never seen before in an MMO, we’re certain you’ll hear a lot more about them in the coming weeks and months. Read on to find out more about the team behind Chronicles of Elyria, and what makes it a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale market.

Some of the ideas are excellent but as always it is in the execution. Good luck!

This is the type of game I've been wanting for a long time. I hope they can pull if off.

    Let's start hyping this game!

    I hope it'll have crowdforging!!!

He lost me at player skill.  All this action combat stuff these days that are based around the players twitch skills have taken the rpg out of mmorpg.  Now we are left with generic mmo #1542 and on.  Put the rpg back and make the games as they should be, as they used to be.  Player skill should be in how the character is developed not in how fast you can mash keys.

Not that any of that matters of course.  I have lost count of how many budding mmo's have started out with a fantastic list of features only for them to drop from the tree one by one until another badly implemented themepark is all that's left to die a quick death a couple of months after release if not sooner.

This sounds great.  As long as its atleast someone good to look at.  Most games that go down the skill based route and open works look and play like they are from the 90's.    Will be keeping an eye on this one

Honestly, i think games like ark are doing a lot of things right...just get a good combat, skill and progression system in such a game as well as group building, politics and trade....basically take mmo mechanics anf put them into a rust world....

Been around for a long long time and I gotta say that sounds good we'll see however at the end of it all just how much is kept in the game after it's all said and done.

Man, what a crazy sounding game, I hope I am alive to play this when it is released in 20XX!!!

I am so good, I backstabbed your face!

Would be players are competing with each other for IP for larger grants of land, wealth and status by giving the studio money and roping in other people to give them money?

Graphics look really nice ala Witcher III.  Concept is cool too.  Hopefully they can pull it off.

My biggest gripe, the game probably will not get released till 2017, like almost every other awesome mmorpg out there in the works. Crowfall, Star Citizen, CU, EQ2.  It will have lots of competition then.

Lol it's like ground hog day at mmorpg.com. Next write up will be about crowd funding kickstarter.

Anyway I still can't figure out if this is an open world.

I think we can all agree it sounds great. I think we all will agree that only time will tell like any other game. Last... I'm sure none of us will hold are breath just yet.

I like this guys way of thinking about a game.

I had this exact idea for permadeath, pretty much identical,,maybe he stole it from me lol.

However having thought of this idea a long time ,i had time to think about it and imo it is sort of not as good as it sounds. The reason is because in factual game play it acts more like just a buff than actually dying.SO for example everyone starts on release day will all turn 100 at the exact same and basically gain a buff to their new life.

I do want players to  age,i think it is the right way to go however i think being Fantasy based and having magic there is a better way to do it.Players should not age the same, there should be factors that judge a person's health and longevity.I would also like to see some of that magic and Fantasy put to use by allowing players to add years to their life perhaps through that risk -reward system.

I like all his points on paper but want to add one more thing>>>SKILL

There is a LOT more to the term SKILL than simply manual aim which many people seem to think is the rule over  all skill factor.Smarts and choice should play into skill as well but then the game needs that depth to allow for lots of choice and decision making.

I believe stats should also play a large role in combat not just skill.Example if i want to create a burly character and large race my player might have a lot of STR but be slow and easy to hit but can also carry more weight therefor dual wield two large weapons etc etc.

Definitely an interesting game to see it unfold.

    Sounds interesting..

BUT I'd like to add they were not the first to come up with the idea of a permadeath game where you pass on traits to a child, Realms of Torment(a game from more then a decade ago)had that along with losing limbs, public executions for criminals who were caught etc.

I'll reply before I read any of the other replies.

I like the gradual and somewhat "soft" perma-death idea.  It's very close to what I imagined I would do if I could make a MMO.  Weather having an actual effect, that's good.  A dynamic or at least somewhat dynamic world in which things can change is good.  Building and destroying is good but has to be carefully handled so I have to reserve judgment on that until I know more about it.

I'm a little leery of the family/guild system.  Again it depends on how they handle it but I can say for my own part I hate being held hostage to some other player who basically gets to be dictator for life and can get away with being an ass because his servants (me and the other peons) have so much invested in the guild-town-family-whatever and are so dependent on it that we can't afford to upset the little brat.

Also, it sounds like a PvP  game which might be a death warrant right there.  I'm not clear on whether it's focused on PvP or not but if it is it's probably dead before it's ever born.  I think a game like this could and maybe even should have PvP but it needs to be controlled and limited and definitely not just open, crazy, kill anyone anywhere anytime PvP.  That just doesn't work well in MMOs.  So here again I have to withhold judgment until I know more about it.
