I had this exact idea for permadeath, pretty much identical,,maybe he stole it from me lol.
However having thought of this idea a long time ,i had time to think about it and imo it is sort of not as good as it sounds. The reason is because in factual game play it acts more like just a buff than actually dying.SO for example everyone starts on release day will all turn 100 at the exact same and basically gain a buff to their new life.
I do want players to age,i think it is the right way to go however i think being Fantasy based and having magic there is a better way to do it.Players should not age the same, there should be factors that judge a person's health and longevity.I would also like to see some of that magic and Fantasy put to use by allowing players to add years to their life perhaps through that risk -reward system.
I like all his points on paper but want to add one more thing>>>SKILL
There is a LOT more to the term SKILL than simply manual aim which many people seem to think is the rule over all skill factor.Smarts and choice should play into skill as well but then the game needs that depth to allow for lots of choice and decision making.
I believe stats should also play a large role in combat not just skill.Example if i want to create a burly character and large race my player might have a lot of STR but be slow and easy to hit but can also carry more weight therefor dual wield two large weapons etc etc.
Definitely an interesting game to see it unfold.
no, the things you do in game make you either live longer or die quicker, like exploring a cave and dieing will make you age faster, or just tradeskilling all your life will make you live longer. Everyone does not die at the exact same time.
mmmm losing life years as a penalty, yet wanting players to take risks.
I see a contradiction right there.
I don't mind myself / my group dying in the first few dungeon runs, as we go in to learn the mechanics of the various bosses in new instances. Sure we read up, but there's no substitute for being there.
Having done that, we can then help new players thorugh the dungeon. Sure it may result in the odd wipe as they go through the same learning curve - more so if they are a tank/healer. But we'll eventually get through it.
So here - die and years of life penalty. Uh oh. Can you see the obvious coming up?
"LFG xxxx instance - MUST have done it before with yyyy achievement and will be questioned / inspected etc etc"
Introduce this type of risk into games - and people play safe, real safe. Only grouping with their closed circle. Shunning any newer players that might cause a failure.
Anyway - very early days yet, we'll see how it eventually develops.
I love the ideas for this game, for some I've been waiting for years to see! Gear gating bothered me a lot, hate being forced to run such and such items because they are more epic. Also have to mention sandbox elements. I know there were few games like that; but, oh the disappointment I felt (I'm talking about you ArcheAge). Allowing us to chose how we spend time in game, on a whim, without restricting anything is something many of gamers want and need. The sheer thought of slaying an ancient dragon in between baking bread makes me excited XD.
I must also say that I'm a bit worried, as they raised the bar really high, and we all know too well how delivery of promised features can be a little underwhelming, generally speaking. Can they balance the game? Can they expand the game? ( in a meaningful way, rather than cloned expansions like WoW)
I sincerely hope the developers won't fall on their own sword, because - I want to play a game like that !!
I'll believe it when I see it. Alot of games that have come down the pipe start out with claims that seem like they'd change the face of MMO's... Rift's ummm... Rifts, and soul system, GW2's events... and while they're perfectly good systems, they don't revolutionize gameplay by any stretch.
If I were a betting man, I'd say that this game will launch with the stuff they mention, but it won't have a significant impact on gameplay as compared to other MMO's. We'll see; I'd love to be proven wrong.
Graphics look really nice ala Witcher III. Concept is cool too. Hopefully they can pull it off.
My biggest gripe, the game probably will not get released till 2017, like almost every other awesome mmorpg out there in the works. Crowfall, Star Citizen, CU, EQ2. It will have lots of competition then.
They all sound good on paper and even produce excellent movie quality premiere videos but how good will it actually be? Only time will tell. Just don't make it overly complicated, keep it intuitive.

Sounds great, but define "wildlife" are players going to kill wolves, pigs and birds etc? Hitting invisible walls and such? Or are we talking bandits, squatters, some kind of human wildlife in a way? I'm kinda turned away by wildlife when I see hordes of wolves strategically placed to aggro the player with no way out. I'd like to see that all go away - but so far every thing else "reads" great.
I've noticed the plans on paper never match up with actual production.
Well I guess I am in the minority but I just do not care how they are envisioning this game. Just one more up and coming game that I can strike off of my list.

Yeah, usually these new games with great sounding ideas wrap their game inside of Themepark game play. Then those great ideas that sounded so meaningful end up be meaningless because....levels and zones. Or PK wet dream. Or some other dumb design ideologies.
Hopefully it'll be different this time. But I am pretty jaded at this point. I'll need solid evidence that it really is different before I donate any money.
One problem with perma-death and PvP is, that people will behave like cowards. They will snipe at others, avoiding open combat, they will run in face of the slightest danger, they will move in big groups for security.
I don't know the details, but if you will perma-die from losing, it will put a severe hamper on PvP.

Good!
Edit to add, it would only hamper legitimate PvP with game reasons, rampant gank squads would likely still be very active. You need something more to stop that sort of thing.

I don't know, it could simply change how people pvp, adapting to that perma death, giving us some intriguing meta plays. But yes, it will be based on execution and balance on dev side (don't want a situation where 99.9% will go for stealth or sth). It could also give us fun battles like in Eve (probably on smaller scale tho), with big picture consequences on whole guilds, and families in this case.
The almighty rule in the world still applies - it all depends.
honestly, if a dev at the beginning of such a huge project comes out with all that innovative stuff they want to do - all i can think is that hes probably really inexperienced and that this will never release as promissed...
name one single game that came out right at the beginning of the project with a lot of innovative stuff they wanted to do and actually delivered in the end?
What a colossal waste of money. Literally everything that mmorpg's don't need or care about. I mean the core concept sure but then the detail of what they really mean?
dynamic world sure can be nice but let's be real this is never done correctly and might never be able to be done correctly with the number of players interacting with the world and content, There will never be meaningful dynamic worlds worth creating. SO cheers another half asses dynamic changing world.
heroic status? Look we just need proper risk reward the entire "heroic" concept is overplayed again this is a game, we all want to play it, we all want to be different but anytime you are wasting your time crafting content for that one dude to the hero you are wasting your time, thousand of us play the game and want fun exciting content.
Skill is a player attribute...look this is a mmorpg not a twitch shooter actual player skill is minimal when it comes to mechanics if i want a game with mechanics that determine skil i'll play one, when i play an RPG I want my skill to be on my character and the skill to simply be my knowledge how to use my character best etc...The real problem with current mmorpgs is that everything has been dummied down so not even your character has skill let alone you.
Not going to argue with you need something to draw the player in, I think guild wars 2 has don that the best as far as world design events etc....again though the problem the entire RPG part of these games has been oversimplified and guildwars 2 is the perfect example. Plenty of stuff to do alive feeling world to interact with but zero reason to do it. Poor loot system, players zerg the content, character development is mediocre at best, extreme simple combat with no layers or interactions. I am not talking some tier loot grind system either which is its own evil, I am talking deep character development and it being tied to the gameworld so that you can have a world that draws you in everyday but with reason to develope your character as you interact with the world not to help the hobgoblins take over the ogre townin the middle fo the field.
Realism just wow I couldnt argue more....I got realism every day in my real life i dont need it in my video game. Now I do want things to make sense and be logical from with in my fantasy world but please in no way do i want realism in my fantasy rpg game. This is a huge area they have ruins MMORPG's wasting loads of time on crafting systems....I get it a few people like to craft but those people should be playing bejeweled because beyond that the only thing crafting serves is for some money making scheme for the few people who will play bejeweled in am mmorpg for weeks just to make in game currency. ENOUGH WITH THE CRAFTING. I should never ever ever have to skill up crafting, instead i should simply need to collect crafting materials recipes in my adventuring and then bring them to a npc and he crafts it for me bam done no stupid crafting leveling treadmill. Save the time money and make a real gameworld with endless content.
Sad I read the title and was excited, now I am laughing about the colassal waste of money that will be invested into this vaporware pile of junk. I am sure a few people think it sounds fun good for them but overall this isnt remotely what the mmorpg genre needs.

This idea was already part of Realms of Torment, an MMO being developed more then 12 years ago, later renamed Age of Mourning.

First of all, good luck to the team.
Second of all, just like someone else said, buzzwords to create hype. Every new mmo does this and they all end up in the same bad spot.
When the game is fully released i´ll judge it. Meanwhile, my hype meter stays below zero.
