Revival: The Importance of Religion

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Revival team has posted a brand new developer diary to introduce fans to the importance of religion in the game when it arrives. Each city will have a pre-defined religion attached to it, but that religion could be altered over time.

A city chooses a temple for a god based on that city’s karmic alignment, player karmic alignment (players using or constantly congregating in/around the temple), and idol/altar influence. Idols and Altars are things players can purchase for their homes to facilitate worship of the deity of their choosing. This means that players can collectively all worship a new type of god in their homes within a city and have significant impact on the city’s religion.

Another game I'm keeping an eye on, yet some of their ideas will be very hard to pull off. So to avoid being disappointed like in my previous 10 mmo's I'm watching from a distance.

Already selling real estate yet no proof of concept. The game sounds great but other than a few renders the devs have shown nothing.

In real life the invention of supernatural beings and religion as consequence, is the worst thing that could happen to human kind.

For the rest, unfortunately religion is part of life and same is a lot of times in various forms present in games, too. And I'm not disturbed as long as they are fictional.

Only game where I have been so much disgusted by fanatism of Guardians faction in Rift, that I could simply not force myself to play them. And it is only game where I have only alts for Defiants.

I might try as long as there is 3rd person view and uses mouse buttons to move characters.

This is developer blog #36 and unless I'm mistaken this is the first one that made it to the MMORPG.com news section. Looking through the older blogs I'd say there are plenty more interesting (personal opinion) than this one so what gives?

I don't mind seeing news about this game, not at all, just wondering why now?

Regardless why, I think that maybe you're down-playing the innovation around the feature, too. Remember to try not to trivialize innovation, else we get cookie-cutters.

As a non-religious person I find different religion extremely fascinating. I do wonder though, what would the world be like with no religion? Would we be more evolved? Less? If a game delved into that I think it would be much more interesting.
