This video is in german, but maybe you get the point...
After 5 years of development and 1 year early access this game is still a piece of crap.
He said in his blog that his game is fully working and not a vaporware like star citizen.
I think Derek Smart is a big troll and maybe he is just jealous of Chris Roberts. He totally screwed up by building his own game and now he is talking bad about his "competitor" to get some attention.

I bought and played Line of Defense. I don't think its bad at all.
I have seen a LOT of other early access games that were FAR worse than LoD and still get better reviews.
The only reason there is bad reviews is cause the "lets hate on Derek Smart for the rest of 2015, cause he butthurt me from star citizen that I spent so much money on it"
With that said, I did kickstart star citizen :P I'm really looking forward to it, I just didn't waste hundreds of dollars on ships and other junk they offered. Is star citizen vaporware? Yeah, it is...until its released in beta as a functioning game it IS VAPORWARE.
Every game is vaporware until they release beta for it. Then its pretty much official at that point unless they trash the game during beta stages and cancel it (which is really rare). So when Derek says that, its pretty much stating the obvious and only said to create drama among all the butthurt it causes. Otherwise, yeah of course its vaporware, it isn't in beta yet lol. That is him definitely trolling right there.
In any case. As for Line of Defense. It has more content than most other early access games I've tried or bought (I've only bought a few, otherwise I just play my friend's early access games he buys for his youtube channel). I actually like LoD, its fun. I played with my friend, and we had a blast. Like I said, compared to other early access games, its a lot better than most on steam. Most early access games are pure junk, but at least this one has more content and functions better than most trash on steam.

With that said. Derek is rather unprofessional in my eyes. The most likely reason he wanted to butthurt all the star citizen backers was just to create attention to his own game. He is kinda troll-like. But I and my friend still think his game is good.
If we were to make our own game though, I think we'd want our game to be noticed because of how good it is...derek went the route of "any attention is good attention"
In any case. Like I said. Star citizen and every other game in alpha or not released is vaporware. Up until beta it pretty much stops being vaporware.
Some alphas on steam for early access haven't been updated in ages, and while still able to buy them...that is pretty much vaporware as well lol. I don't know any game off top of my head, and I don't really feel like looking. But my friend has quite a few alpha early access games that are just abandoned
As for Derek's alpha game, that is vaporware too even though its playable. At any time during alpha he can stop selling it and abandon it. But it is playable at least, so there is that. Star citizen doesn't really even have a playable version, and probably won't till 2017 or even 2018.

This was an attack piece. My statement about this is over here and here
We're working on the game and it's coming along great. Just needs some tweaks, bug fixes, polish etc.

He makes some good points actually and for fun, anytime you want to take a shot at Derek Smart, you need only play this card:
Daikatana
Long regarded as one of the major commercial failures in the computer game industry:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daikatana
However, you could also argue that John Romero knows all about the dangers of too much hype. To his credit, he publicly apologized for the advertizing "John Romero's about to make you his bitch." saying he regretted it.
Games Radar listed it as one of the worst games of all time. Again, kind of a credit to Romero that he survived this to continue to work in the industry so you could say he's a subject matter expert.
Romero was one of the founders of the visionary ID Software so he had a history of producing visionary work just like Roberts but had a big fall from grace when Daikatana was beaten to market by others During the development of the game, Romero wanted for nothing being treated like a rock star to include a multi million dollar office and hiring on his then girlfriend Stevie Case. He missed multiple deadlines and ran up over $44 MM in development costs.
When initial builds were released, they were less than impressive... Anyone seeing anything familiar here?
Still think he doesn't know what he's talking about?
I think he learned from this. Arrogant? Sure. Changed? More mature. Yep.

not exactly at their weakest.... I'm also sure they are enjoying all the free publicity, good or bad, they still don't have to pay anyone. All these people that see these articles and do not know anything about SC are probably going to the SC website and buying into the beta now, after seeing the gajillion developer videos and doing actual research on the game.
How about bash nobody?

I missed the connection between Daikatana and Derek Smart. Derek Smart worked on it?

Translation of the first 2min of the video with personal notes in (), and translation errors are the fault of Jack (Daniels, not Bauer) ;
It started with this blog entry with that the developer Derek Smart started his campaign against the mega project Star Citizen. His critique was reasonable at the start
and he wasn't the first who was sceptical/opposed to Chris Robert space sim. From there it went down hill. In his following articles he continued to adopt the wrong tone.
He insulted the backers, demanded Chris Roberts to step down, and urged others to submit a complaint to the FTC (Federal Trading Comision) to provoke an investigation ( whats wrong about an investigation?).
During all his tirades (bit less than rants) he refered to his experience as developer and to his latest project "Line of Defence" that in contrast to SC it was working,
on the market and not vaporware. Cause enough for us to put the dirty discussion on neutral ground and to test if the latest game of Derekt Smart can hold up to its promises.
In the trailer mass battles of thousands of players are advertised on space stations, huge open world maps, on land, on water, in the air, and even in space. A continues conflict
in a persistant world with impressiv events in a pure PvP setting. Gigantic space stations are supposed to make possible seamless space fights and docking. All this in a breath-taking
environments. The reality looks like this ( 1:30 in video). We awake as one of 4 classes on each site with our starter kit, a pistol and a rifle in a huge space station.
Everything looks the same hardly anything has interaction and we can neither attack nor talk to those buddies (NPC asset at 1:45). When we move we continously have the feeling someone
holds us on a leash, let's us go and keeps us back (rubber I guess).
--------------------------------------------------
I guess it comes down to a rant against Smart without going into his complaints against SC. So a basic ad hominem attack which is often used by people when they can not argue against someone. What this leaves me to believe is that Gamestar has no argument against Smart and their opinion seems to me that the only way to make him go away is to attack his work. Which points to that unless you created a game and delivered everything Sc promised so basicly you create SC by yourself, you are not allowed voice your opinion. That is imho a rather "special" view because I doubt those guys at Gamestar never greated a game like LoD before so by their argument they should not be allowed to raise concerns or opinions.
All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care.
Playing: ESO, WOT, Smite, and Marvel Heroes
^^ That would be the intelligent way to proceed. Unfortunately, in the case of the SC fanbois who roam these forums, since they still have no game to play, and no game upcoming in the foreseeable future, they really don't have much else to do except to bash Smart and/or anyone who doesn't profess their undying love for a game that, as of yet, nobody has played at all.
You almost want to feel sorry for them, until you read their hate-filled posts, and then you realize that they are most likely just upset that they bought all of those ships.....er, concept art.
"Why would I want to loose a religion upon my people? Religions wreck from within - Empires and individuals alike! It's all the same." - God Emperor of Dune
You know that if Blizzard released that same game it would likely have at least 500k players?
Also if that is a working game, then it most certainly is more than SC can say.
It really doesn't matter if if he never made a game ever,he can still understand the business side of things. He is still right about wanting accountability from this business operation. If this was some 100k or something,it really wouldn't matter much but 85+ million is like whoa people kill for that kind of money,it brings out the worst in people.
You don't just hand someone 85 million and say "we trust you go ahead, take it".

Some quotes from the summary : "Cardboard figures and Blindmans Buff" , " ....an absolute impudence of a game , that is abusing the Steam Early Access Program...", " Line of Defense is the complete bankruptcy of the developer Derek Smart "
They give very specific and valid reasons for their evaluation in the article.
For instance : Headline "Line of Defense »has stopped working<<"... as in :
"Bei unseren Versuchen, die anderen drei Maps zu betreten, verzichtete das Spiel dann konsequenterweise komplett auf jegliche Beleuchtung, der Bildschirm war bis auf die Minimap und Waffenanzeige schwarz. Tiefschwarz. Die Bildrate dieser Grafikanomalie betrug dabei regelmäßig weniger als 10 fps!"
"During our attempts to enter the other three maps, the game consistently forgoes any kind of lightning .. completely. The screen was black with the exception of the minimap and the weapon display. DEEPLY BLACK. The framerate of this graphical anomaly was routinely below 10 fps."
And to top it all off, when the author was sending his bug reports to Derek Smart (exactly the way they should be reported), he was kicked from the forum for trolling and perma-banned (here is the transcript):

Everything started with this blogentry
Therewith developer Derek Smart started his campaign against the mega project "Star Citizen"
At the beginning his critics were reasonable
and he wasnt the first sceptical person towards Chris Roberts ambitious spacesim
From here on all went down steep
In his following posts he adopted the wrong tone more and more
With all his allegations he always refered to his developement experience
and also his newest project "Line of Defense"
which would work properly in contrast to Star Citizen
is on the market and therefor no so called "vapoware"
Enough reason for us to pull the dirty discussion back on neutral ground and check
if the new game from Derek Smart can confirm his words.
The trailer, website and Steam description promises massive battles with thousends of players
on spacestations,
huge open world maps,
on the ground, on water and even in space
a enduring conflict in a persistant world
with impressive events in a completely player driven setting.
Huge spacestations shall allow fascinating spacebattles and seamless docking
All of this in epic sceneries
The reality looks like this:
We wake up as one out of four classes per side with our starter kit
A pistol and a assaultriffle in a big spacestation
Everything looks the same, almost nothing is useable and these guys right here are invulnerable and cant be interacted with.
When we start moving we feel like somebody is holding us on a doglead
let us go and hold us back again.
In general is this movement more like floating than well animated walking
Especially when we start sprinting and jump over bumbs like a racecar
and in corners we drift against walls and bounce off like a bouncy ball
speaking of a wall...
...the spacestation which is build out of muddy repeating textures has no windows
because it doesnt need them since we can simply stick our gun in the wall and enjoy the view.
Or we search for such a beautiful ventilation crack in the ground
Ehm, wait... theres no air in space, right?
But hey, no need to be this picky
there are way bigger problems.
for example: the weaponhandling
aiming with ironsights is just impossible
that only works with the crosshairs
with some guns this gets very wired
ahm...how should anyone fight with this?
Its seems very bizarre that the weapons doesnt even fit in the mounts which dont look like hands overall
and this after professedly 5 years of developement and almost 1 year early access.
As well as the strange weaponsounds which in addition have wired alternate firemodes.
Oh yes, and then there is the "reloading"
It works like this:
Nope, there is no animation playing
The gun doesnt even show up on screen by itself
but if we bring it back to early its still not reloaded
We imagine this is a nice little plot twist in a battle...
Who does not want that needs to find such a weaponpack and collect it.
These weapons will dissapear when players log out.
That by itself would be annoying enough
To come along on top we cant even really enjoy our new guns
From now on we loose stamina with every step
Logically since we are now completely covered with heavy weapons
sadly we get slower with every stamina point we loose...
until complete stop !
So we can wait every few steps to let the stamina recover
or we simply drop all the new shiny guns on the floor
btw: if we press the sprint button while standing still
this burns 100% of our stamina and locks us down in position
But now we mingled around enough, lets leave this same old story station
Lets go to the airlock, jump in our spacesuite, open the map and choose a position
loadingscreen...
and error
next map
loadingscreen...
and error
cough
next map
loadings screen....
didnt work either... we fell through the world
but we wont give up here
last map! loading screen...
seriously?
and yes we were able to reproduces this exactly!
every time
after our reports the game got patched back to an earlyer version
and look at that the first map "heat wave" loads
and we sink down motionless towards ground glued to the camera
At least they remain true to one´s principles with the sloppy mapdesign
The performance is hard to describe
On our system with a i7 - 4770K, 32gb RAM and a GTX970, the fps drops down every few steps lower than 20
which causes the visible stuttering
In the game itself is nothing going on at all
except the shuttles flying around every 30 seconds
we decide to use it and manage to get in anyhow
the shuttle is glued to the screen and jerks and stutters across the map
but how do we get out of it?
ahm... stuardess... we´d like to get out of here
ah, error.
Thank you, thats another solution
By the way we didnt saw one single player in 6 Hours
well... we dont see anything onTHIS map anyways
nothing at all

By the way we didnt saw one single player in 6 Hours
6:08
well... we dont see anything onTHIS map anyways
6:11
nothing at all
6:12
and the best part... all the other maps are plain black too
6:16
we reported that as a bug too
6:19
as a ticket as well as on steam
6:21
what we didnt expect:
6:24
the developer calls us "Trolls", threaten to permaban us und patched the game back to the newest build.
6:32
correct ...the version of the game were all the maps dont load at all
6:37
If the flying works or if vehicles exist
6:41
we cant check now
6:43
to be honest
6:44
we saw more than enough from the game
6:49
Line of Defense is one big frivolity
6:52
and another reason for the complains about steams early access
6:57
the game is not playable
7:00
The developement progress since the start of the early access phase in september 2014
7:04
is minimal but nevertheless the game was sold for up to 100$
7:09
right now u can easyly join the closedbeta
7:12
and buy up to 150$ item pack
7:16
with content that is not yet in the game
7:21
That the game doesnt work is not clearified from the fake trailer and beautified pictures
7:27
no clearification in the diescriptions too
7:30
critical voices on steam are beeing instantly suppressed by the developer
7:34
posts deleted or moved
7:36
on top of that, players with bad reviews are called noobs
7:41
with bad hardware or dont want to read how to play the game (the real way)
7:48
fact is:
7:49
LOD has so much big problems that its basicly not playable
7:54
it doesnt even run with direct X11
7:57
And still Derek Smart talks about a release end of this summer
8:02
Its about time for steam to tighten the rules
8:06
create new rules and implement them
8:09
till then developers like Derek Smart are able to publish software crap with crazy prices and monetarize at will
8:17
and thats bad for steam and the customers and like in the case Derek Smart for the complete industry
Derek Smart's reaction:
"So apparently this "Ben" guy is from the German magazine gamestar.de and they created this account and bogus tech support issues specifically to troll us. No doubt because they're Star Citizen fanboys and they don't like my blogs about it. And as expected, they now they have an entire article up about it."
I guess he never took the time to check out the Star Citizen articles on GameStar. If he did, he would not call them fanboys !
It gets better
http://steamcommunity.com/app/266620/discussions/0/535151589903956981/
Now Derek Smart says that GameStar is too dumb to update their graphic drivers ... and of course he locked the thread. Later he goes on about them using "German driver versions" ... ahem ... nuff said.
Should someone tell him that GameStar has its own Hardware group that knows all the information one can know about correctly setting up test rigs for just about any test ?
The test rig that they used to run LoD handles Witcher 3 smoothly on ultra settings. In LOD they get under 10-20 fps, with the screen being mostly black.

So at this point I wouldn't even bother with their games. If they keep censoring people so much just don't support the company. It'll hurt them in the end."

Here is a nice summary (by the user "Dunnerschlach") from the LOD Steam Megathread that Derek Smart linked himself. Take notice of all the points that have nothing to do with the "outdated German drivers", which The Smarty has identified as culprit for the problems one can see in the LOD video . But well, as we all know ;-) and The Smarty keeps telling us, this was all a set up by ill-meaning gaming journalists who have nothing better to do than harbor ill will against the Greatest Internet Warlord that ever lived.
Funny little detail: Derek Smart cannot delete the LOD Steam Megathread like he did with so many other threads in the last 24 hours in the LOD Steam forum, because the thread was started by a Steam Community Moderator ;-)
Without further ado ... enjoy:

"Hi Mr Smart,
being from Germany I am able to understand the Gamestar article and the narration in the video. I would like to add my 2 cents. Sorry about my English.
I'm sure you don't know Gamestar and you don't care about it (why would you, it's a german magazine). But to put this article into perspective you should know that Gamestar is one of 3 PC magazines in Germany still offering a printed magazine in addition to the website. For Germany this is saying a lot since most print mags went down the gutter a long time ago. Gamestar is a serious magazine. They do not (and I repeat NOT) stomp on any game just for a goof or to produce cheap clicks (if they need clicks they launch an article about porn used with Oculus Rift... ^^). However when it comes to games those guys are professionals - not free from fault but who is?
The article posted yesterday is NOT about comparing LoD with Star Citizen. It is not a review. It is a look at an Early Access title. They do this from time to time. The reason they picked your game is that you kind of raised some attention with your recently published...let's call it "doubts" about whether or not Star Citizen will ever be released.
Gamestar actually discussed your first blog in this video :
Discussion about Derek Smart's arguments[www.gamestar.de]
And they stated very clearly that you've got a point. Star Citizen most likely won't be what the developers are promising right now. And most certainly it won't be what people right now expect it to be. There are gamers putting hundreds and hundreds of bucks into this game. They kind of expect it to be the next "gaming messias". I don't know what Roberts will be releasing at the end but I do know for sure that these people will be disappointed. It's kind of like Duke Nukem Forever. With this level of high expectations there can only be disappointment.
BUT after your first blog you had to follow up with another article. And this article (Interstellar Justice) is nothing but a rant full of UNPROVEN accusations and insults against Roberts and his company. For example you claim that you have hired research guys (paid by the hour of course) who "...say they’ve never before seen so much “conflicting” information in any project. As in ever....". Yet you fail to deliver the slightest form of any prove whatsoever in order to back up this statement.
So yeah - you raised a lot of dust during the last couple of weeks and that's why Gamestar got curious about LoD. They did not want to compare it to SD. They just wanted to take a look and see if you can actually deliver on your great statements about your experience etc. etc.
Well...this brings me to LoD and yesterdays events. Before I continue I'd like to add that I hate Space Fight/Flight/whatever games and I do not play multiplayer online games. So I'm not the least bit interested in playing SC or LoD. I would never support a Kickstarter project and I would never buy an Early Access title because I don't spend money on a list of promises and because I have a family I don't want to waste my precious gaming time on unfinished games.
This being said I have to say that your game looking underwhelming so far is kind of a huge understatement.
Let's just put aside the bad lighting and the flickering. This could be driver issues. I'm not a programmer. I don't know about this stuff. What I do know is, that falling though level geometry or sticking your gun through the wall of a space station has nothing to do with drivers. This is collission detection going bonkers. Also the game crashing while loading - not really a driver issue isn't it? And there are a lots of other points in the Gamestar article/video each of them more than enough reason to raise some eyebrows considering the fact that this game has been in development for 5 years:
1) Animations
I'm not a big fan of the "shaking gun" some FPS use during walking. Sometimes it's so bad I l'm literally about to throw up (I think this is called motion sickness). I could not play Half Life 2 because of this. And in the old days (Doom, Doom2, Heretic) this was almost inevitable.
However Gamestar is right when they say LoD looks like someone is is dragging you on a dog leash through the corridors. There is almost no animation at all. It looks like a hand-ish thing holding a gun and floating through corridors.
And don't get me started on the third person animations. The videos - YOUR videos - show something remotely resembling a walk cycle. But the character is not walking. It's just sliding through the corridors
2) Reloading
This is a shooter. A multiplayer shooter. Basically shooting and reloading is the very core of the gameplay. And while I agree that with my development team consisting of 6 guys reload animations would be way down on my priority list, I believe that after being 5 years in development the basic reloading mechanics should work somehow (again, I'm not a programmer). But the Gamestar video shows that this is not the case. The author presses the reload button and the gun disappears. That's it. It doesn't come back. He has to pull out the gun again and even then it is not fully reloaded.
3) Stamina
Another thing you cannot really blame on outdated drivers. Apparently when carrying more than 3 guns the stamina bar kicks in even during normal working. Other games use stamina during sprints. When the bar is depleted you cannot sprint until you have a full bar again.
In LoD the stamina seems to go down with every step you make. And to add insult to injury you get slower the more stamina you lose until you can't move anymore.
Another funny thing is that if you press the sprint key while standing still your stamina depletes in an instant. All of this is being demonstrated in the Gamestar video. Bad drivers? I think not.
4) Aiming
Like reloading in a shooter aiming is kind of fundamental...at least that's what I would think. Thankfully LoD offers a cross hair because using the iron sights is simply not possible. Look at the video. Look how the character holds the gun. How on earth should anyone use the iron sights properly? It is impossible. How is this still not fixed after 5 years of development?
Again I'm not a programmer but when I would make a shooter - before I would even think of creating a level I would make a room with a single target in it and I would make damn sure that the actual shooting in my shooter is working
5) Overall look
Okay this one is a little bit tricky. First of all you don't have much guys on your team. So I totally understand that you don't have the manpower to create loads and loads of highly detailed assets.
But when I think (for example) of Cities Skylines which has been put together by 10 people (yes they outsourced some of the asset creation but you could have done that too), you have to admit that LoD simply doesn't look good - not only from a technical point of view but also from an artistic point of view. You are listing a lot of engines on your website but bottom line is that you don't even reach early UE3 standard. This is more like UT2004 and this game had better looking assets and environments
Even the official screenshots promoted by 3000AD do not give a better impression. The outside drawing distance is ridiculous, the textures of the terrain are very simple AND they are just seamless tiles which one can see very clearly because of the pattern repeating over and over again. I'm sorry to say this but even for an Early Access title this is below "meh".
6) Massively Multiplayer
This one hasn't been covered by the Gamestar article/video. So thats just my thoughts.
You claim that LoD is a MMO Shooter with hundreds and thousands of players dishing it out. Fair enough but have you really had a single test with more than - let's say 100 players ever?
When I look at the screenshots I rarely see more than two characters in it at the same time. There is NO screenshot (or video) of an actual battle. You promote MASSIVELY multiplayer yet after 5 years you are not able to show MINIMAL muliplayer.
So how is this gonna work? Who will be responsible for server maintenance etc.? Is there even a server structure? Please tell me you are working on it because this MMO will be released mid to late 2015
OK, Mr Smart. During the last couple of weeks you have acted very aggressively towards Chris Roberts and Star Citizen. You call this game Vaporware. You accuse Roberts & Co. of cheating and fraud. Yet after 5 years of development, decades of expertise and of course backed by the company that is "..pushing the envelope of technical capability, and leading the simulation game market in sheer scope and ambition..." (direct quote from 3000AD website), what you can show looks like an amateur put it together in Blender Game Engine during 4 months. And what's there isn't even working. Seriously - you spent 12 million bucks on this? Where did all the money go? 12 million dollar, 6 guys, 5 years - that doesn't really add up, at least not when you look at the results.
You accuse Roberts of being a fraud. You say he can't build a 1:1 copy of the Empire State Building using matches but at the same time you claim that you can do it using Jell-O. I'm really sorry but before accusing other people you might wanna look at your own work. Because right know it looks like everything you are accusing other people of, you are doing yourself."
Have fun

Lets not forget about the LOD Leaderboard - "showing the Top 30 Players" ....well, only 9 played ;-) and 6 of those basically less than approx 2 hours in total .... which is no surprise when you get 74 crashes in 6 hours of playing)

as promises and theoretical concept project this game is awesome but for real it is crap just what is/have to be Star Citizen,
Chris Robert ll be in 10 years what is Derek Smart today ,Line of Defense = Star Citizen
Whoa! Ok, obviously you haven't been in touch with any of the LOD stuff. Star Citizen, as it stands today, is already better that LOD. CR will never be what Derek Smart is because he's actually had success. He doesn't have anything to prove. Derek Smart's mouth may as well have created WoW based on how he talks himself up, but his hands can't cash those checks as he's essentially created a game that is so horribly broken and unplayable that he doesn't both trying to fix it and, instead, spends his time attacking another game dev attempting to do something innovative. Derek Smart may not think that LOD is vaporware, but it might as well be. Just because you release "something" doesn't mean you've released a game. I could just as easily but a templated project off the Unity asset store, publish it and have a more complete, less buggy "game" than what he's put out.

This is starting to remind me of the whole Jim Sterling/Digital Homicide debacle.
Since when is Tuesday a direction?
"Or we search for such a beautiful ventilation crack in the ground"
ROFL! This literally cracked me up! Hahaha, that was really bad that the game did not even "glued" the buildings and are left with huge cracks between the 3D models.
An MMO without players, this is really sad. RIP game before it even properly launched.

The gaming magazine GameStar follows up on Derek Smarts accusations about intentional trolling, using the wrong drivers, abusing the free game access and creating "false" tech support reports.
Its in German (Google Translator FTW) but well worth reading.
With links where Derek Smart is verifyably lying about having never received such bug reports w.r.t. to the bugs that have been seen in the GameStar video (look here, before The Smarty deletes it ;-)

Fun Fact:
Valve has started to unban ;-) many of the users that Derek Smart has banned to silence them in the Steam LOD forum
Have fun
