People who complain about griefers in EvE Online simply don't have a clue how to play the game. Sorry.
I'm playing EvE since 2005 and I've never been griefed once. If you get griefed, then atleast 50% of it is your own fault, because you don't know how to pevent it from happening.
In Darkfall, ArcheAge, etc you will just have the same problems, and imho these gamnes are even worse when it comes to griefing then EvE ever was.
Sandbox ...WAY over used term.Sandbox as of now is misused in a way that simply states it is NOT a Themepark but that does NOT auto make it a Sandbox either.A sandbox has to have the tools for the players to create the game/universe a game like Eve does NOT do that.An example of a true Sandbox would be UnrealTournament because you play on private run servers where you can actually do whatever the heck you want with your server. If you know some C+ you can go in and change ALL of the parameters of the game, the stats , healing, movement speed, physics you can change the maps as well as add new assets etc etc.Bottom line is there are no such true Sandbox games out there especially not in the MMORPG genre.PVP is NOT a sandbox aspect it is simply a Flag you can give players to flag them destructible and how much of a damage thresh hold. The best you can hope for in games is ZERO HAND HOLDING ,no cheat aspects like add-ons and radar and lock-on just the players and their skills and hopefully some nicely laid out maps that make for some quality combat.
Wurm Online is defeantly a sandbox mmo. It has all the tools you would want for a sandbox game, I suggest you read up on it before you answer me. It will save yourself the embarrassment.
Valexy you are incorrect. E.g attacking and destroying at a loss purely because it is funny or they 'deserved it' by pveing in expensive ships, or simply 'farming for tears' as they love to say. This is all about attacking the person not the avatar. Then there's the groups dedicated to killing new players in high sec (again at a loss for kicks)
I respect eve as the best hard core pvp game, but don't represent what it is.
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
if you are looking for a true sandbox game with features like housebuilding, terraforming, crafting, player economy etc. in a fantasy setting, i suggest you try Wurm Online. Its also free to try untill you hit a certain skillpoint cap before you decide if you want to pay or not. In case you choose to join a pvp server be advised it is a highly competitive place and VERY hard especially for new players. Look immidiately for allies and join a well established village asap. All my years of gaming i have never come across a game like Wurm, it is one of a kind and awsome game.
I would say Ryzom (if you dont mind the dated graphics), and Uncharted Waters Online.
I would like to include ArcheAge but their business model is enough for me not to care. If you plan to subscribe then yeah go ahead. If you want to play without a sub then my other two suggestions are much better IMO.

Sorry, but I've never been attacked by anyone in high-sec ever. Not while hauling goods, not while running missions in a fully pimped out marauder or faction battleship or whatever else. Usually there's a reason why people attack you. Maybe because you've said stoopid stuff in the forums, maybe you've disrespected someone in local chat, maybe you're braggin about your fully pimped out ships, I don't know.
What goes around comes around, and if you silently enjoy the game, then you most likely won't be the target of the griefers. That's my experience atleast in all of those open PvP sandboxes and especially EvE Online, as it's actually way less griefing there than in Darkfall or Mortal.
I notice alot are suggesting Wurm Online, but I had a miserable time finding any land in that ....I dont remember the server name but every square inch I found was claimed, and when I asked in chat they all said it was all claimed.
