Chris Junior took over the Game Director role for Rift back in December of 2014 right around the 3.0 launch for Nightmare Tide. Since then, the Trion Worlds team has been plugging away on content to lead players onward through the murky dark waters of the expansion. We caught up with Chris to talk about the most recent patch, Waking Nightmares, and what we can expect to hear about at Gamescom this year.

Lastly, you may log into Rift after this article and realize you can now harvest in areas well beyond your level of harvesting skill.
Yyyyeeessssssss, I've been hoping they'd do this for a while now. I'm hoping it works for runecrafting as well, but this will go a long way in making leveling up new professions/professions on old characters (at least the harvesting ones) a lot less obnoxious.
Ugh. Tiered raids sounds awful. Either you have the gear and skill to progress or you don't. And one of the reasons I left RIFT was the homogenization of classes. Everyone can heal! Everyone can tank! Everyone can DPS! What's the fucking point? And now they're standardizing interrupts and making things even more generic and bland. SO glad I got out of this game.
Tiered raids are great. They keep the raids as-is for folks that want, make harder versions for those that want with greater rewards, and easier versions for folks with lesser rewards. I don't see what's bad about that.
Beyond that, giving an interrupt to all classes is fantastic. Needing to swap souls for a fight for an interrupt, potentially going to a weaker spec for a fight or one you don't enjoy as much is lame. Interrupts are a basic necessity for dps in a similar vein as dispells are for healers or taunts for tanks.
You're right, every calling can heal/tank/dps, but each does it differently (some have more options for the roles than others!). It makes bringing the player more important than the class in all but hardcore progression settings a thing, which is again, fantastic. Souls still retain quite a bit of diversity, so they're hardly "homogenized".
You sound salty.
The point? I play a warrior in FFXIV, I am level 58 completely interested in the story, but thinking about quitting because I am so tired of my class. The point is options.
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile
I'm surprise you didn't quit sooner as cleric are like that when the game started called rift:).
I tried this game again out of curiosity/dreadful boredom (I get these two confused).
The three things I noticed:
- They dropped the ball on open world content in their latest expansion, it is as weak in this field now as WoW's WoD expansion is. Coming from Storm Legion's Dendrome zone, where there were events and players playing them all the time, to the new zones which are effectively ghost towns with few to no events occurring (one zone only has one single event that repeats every few hours), it's quite discouraging to play and it makes the game feel dead.
- Which brings me to point two, the EU servers are low population flagged, 24/7. There is hardly anyone playing this game anymore on EU, and it's time they merge the servers.
- Lastly, the P2W is real in this expansion. You're even forced to pay cash on a pack just for the ability to wear certain gear pieces... Even simply being a subscriber isn't enough. In Storm Legion you could buy gear with real life cash as well, but in this expansion they really gave you no alternatives besides paying. Want to wear some pants? Pay 25 euros. Want to wear earrings? Pay 25 euros. Want to use your already-paid-for mount underwater? Pay 15 euros. Coming from the publishers of ArcheAge, TRION's behaviour of course doesn't surprise me. The problem is, this behaviour is what killed ArcheAge and gave TRION an unshakable negative reputation... And they appear to make no efforts to recover from that with Rift.
All-in-all, it's unfortunate, Rift was a fun game.
Yeah tons the stuff you said mostly pay to rush, can get them ingame with out using other people money to get like rex. The P2W still not there when takes time to get the top gear and there no way cash can get people there.
Wait, what - they added in "40-player" raids? The game has only had 20/10 player raids till now.
Is the writer confused?
