I wouldn't put too much stake in population, though. Some of my best times in MMOs were in SWG and Lineage 2 or even early days WoW. It's more about the quality of the community, imo. As long as there are enough people to have a good economy.
I wouldn't be surprised if some browser MMORPGs would take the cake on this one. Dofus has had a 25 million total player base for example. Don't know about eg. Runescape, but my guess is that one is even much more
Nope none of the above are the most populated, another American who forgets there is a continent called Asia.
Some mom's in Asia have millions upon millions playing. Age Of Wulin had 20 odd million at one point.
Dungeon Fighter China is one such game at one point had 400 million. There are plenty more with staggering amount of numbers as well.
but unless the OP read and write chinese/korean that is pretty much a moot point now is it not..? Most of those games do not do very well at all here in the west. (and vice versa)

Nope the op didnt mention NA or Europe, he simply asked which mmo was most populated and I answered.
If all you wanted was too see games posted then you have achieved your goal, but if you wanted to find a new game with a acceptable amount of players currently then I think you should add more depth to your question. If your just looking for a new game to play that doesnt feel dead, and is active enough to not die out in the next month or year then I would suggest also looking at instancing zones and communities in the game. I hop on Wakfu quite often which is Dofus sequel and it probably has one of the smallest player bases for current games still running servers and even though it is pretty much a dead game it feels more alive then World of Warcraft because the community is great and interactive. I log in on WoW the western giant and I feel alone because I rarely have meaningful communication in groups.
Done ranting, my main point is revise your question to have more specifics when you know what your really looking for.
An account in WoW that has not logged in a year but is still paying subscription is considered active.
If top F2P games used yearly metrics for accounts they would be far above WoW's numbers.
A far more accurate metric would be unique accounts per month.
Here are some numbers I found with a quick search.
Dungeon Figher Online, Peak CCU - 3M in August 2012
Fantasy Westward Journey, Peak CCU 2.7M in August 2012
ZT Online, Peak CCU 2M in September 2009
Blade and Soul, Peak CCU 1.5 M in November 2014
League of Legends, Peak CCU 1.3M in January 2012
Guild Wars II, Peak CCU 400k in August 2012
SWTOR, Peak CCU 350k in January 2012
Final Fantasy XIV ARR, Peak CCU 325k in September 2013
World of Tanks, Peak CCU 250k in December 2012
Eve Online, Peak CCU 60k in June 2010
Note: This does not mean that they have not had higher numbers, but this is a list of numbers from public announcements. Peak CCU is the number of accounts simultaneously logged in.

At the end of the day, this would be the perfect customer, paying a monthly sub but consuming no resources, EVE is full of accounts like that, subscribing to train but otherwise never logging in. (done it myself at times)
The most accurate measure is the number of people logged in at any one time, peak, average, etc.
But, number of actual users is almost a state secret, with few companies really wanting to share an accurate picture of their number of paying customers.
Maybe the real measure is how much money they generate, might be the only value that matters in the end.

people often forget that ESO is also on the consoles and doing very well there. if those number are to be included, ESO has to be up there in population in the west currently.
Sounds about right but the order could really be anything besides Wow still in top. I have a feeling that FFXIV is a bit lower on the list but these games are surely the Western top 5, all good games (besides that TORs cutscenes gives me hernia).

If we consider MMORPG titles from this list that only have a P2P subscription and so far have no intention of ever going F2P then only 3 titles stand out:
Fantasy Westward Journey
Final Fantasy XIV ARR
Eve Online

Why would we do that? The OP didn't ask for P2P, and the number being used is not different in sub/non sub games.
Also, this list is far from complete, it is simply public numbers I was able to find with a quick search.

Good points - just want to clarify that I was not trying to put down your list - just differentiating P2P titles from the rest. Thanks for taking time to search and construct the list - it maybe public figures but we don't always have everything in one place.

I think another dimension you should think about is the quality of the community. I'd say SWTOR, ESO, and FFXIV:ARR have friendlier communities than WoW at the moment. That being said, "friendly" should be considered a relative term, as it depends on where you are in the game at the time. FFXIV:ARR has a friendly and helpful community except when you get to the end game raiding scene, as easy content and ease of access do not mix well with traditional raiding difficulty.
Comments
Obviously World of Warcraft, followed (by a very large margin) by probably FFXIV and GW2?
Eve and ESO also seem pretty popular.
l2p
Hard to say... Most F2P companies only report regged accounts if anything. And that says nothing about population.
WoW is said to have 1-2 mil players on each of the western continents.
the most others sit at about 2-800k, then again population does not say much as it depends on the game and how it is structured.
But all in all WoW is a strong contender. ESO and Neverwinter are doing pretty good. EvE is kinda solid at a few 100k
This have been a good conversation

It should be noted that Lineage only has like 3 actual human players and the rest are bots.
And to piggyback, I thought Tera made a huge increase in population when it went to Steam.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
Eve online runs at about 20k users (online at a time, at all there are more)
so no idea why we would name it the largest by population.
it's a niche game. and that's why those who play it, like it.
because CCP didnt went full global.
ps: any reason you guys ignore 2nd life and push gw2 that high? they dont have that many players ^^

It had over $400 million in revenue, not 400 million players lol.
