Heya, Veryn here. I'm one of those so-called 'elites' in the game with some of the most experience in the game.
In this game, there are many, many combat skills to choose. I will go over each skill and the benefits, so you may choose for yourself. This contains major spoilers for the game, so stop reading from this point on if you want to discover them for yourself.
In-Game, you can type /wiki Skill Name and it'll bring up a page about that skill.
Fire Magic:
Total bleh! It's weak, and many mobs resist the damage. I would advise avoiding this unless you want to get it to 25 to learn Ice Magic which is much, much stronger but very difficult to get abilities for.
Ice Magic
One of the best skills in the game, but also the grindiest in terms of time investment to get reagents for to research the high level spells. It revolves around utility attacks, defensive moves, crowd control, AoE damage, and has good burst damage. This is a very good bread and butter skill, and it's somewhat easy to gear for. If you want to pursue it, send a /tell to Veryn and I might help you learn it.
Mentalism
The strongest skill in the game at the moment, but gear dependent. It's also not very good until you learn Electrify from a mushroom in Myconian Cave at level 22. You'll want the Spring Fairy set of gear which adds electricity damage, as well as a Thundersmite which drops anywhere dwarven gear drops. Your weapon should have as many electric attack mods as possible. OP is a Mentalist named Veryn.
Psychology
One of the greatest support skills. It helps you to regenerate power, heal, crowd control, and debuff mobs. It's useful when paired with almost any other skill.
Necromancy
I hear it's not that good, and the pets are kinda wonky. I don't know too much about how this functions end game since there aren't a lot of high level necromancers that stuck to it.
Animal Handling
This suffers somewhat from the wonky pets. It's pending a massive content update that will add breeding to the game and better pet AI. It can do pretty good support damage, but only use it as a side skill for extra damage if you can regenerate your power and survive well enough.
Druid
A must have for anyone that wants to get around fast. You can transform into a bird and fly around if you get it to level 50. It also does good damage with Nature and Poison nukes, and has a couple useful heals. It's pretty useful.
Hammer
Pretty good melee damage, but high cooldown and power hungry.
Sword
It has good survivability, good damage, and it has an amazing debuff that makes mobs deal 25% less damage. It has a few other interesting abilities, and there are a few ways you can build Sword.
Battle Chemist
This skill is very expensive. I highly suggest getting power leveled to cap before buying skills for it, or waiting until you are level 50 already to start playing with it. It's a very useful skill otherwise. It has buffs you can give to other players, such as damage reduction or move speed. It also has one of the fastest movement speed buffs in the game. Most of it's attacks are AoE, and it has a golem follower that can serve as a healing or power battery so you never run out of power.
Archery
Bleh! Archery is too expensive for a new player. Put down the bow as soon as you get it, since you'll be wasting your time. It requires that you level fletching and carpentry to get access to the higher level arrow recipes needed to fire your bow. It's somewhat okay in terms of damage, and it has a really nice mesmerize attack. It pairs well with Druid or Battle Chemistry due to Poison Arrow.
Shield
Pretty good, but a little expensive to learn at first. You need ~15k gold in Armor Patching kits to give to Tyler Green in the tutorial cave before he teaches you. It has lots of defensive abilities, such as negating elemental damage and improving your armor or making you take less damage.
Staff
This is like shield, but for physical damage. It can also serve as a support skill if you use a staff, but only if you have good power regen. Many players pair this with Shield to make themselves an unstoppable juggernaut of defensive power. Damage for this skill is gear dependent.
Lycanthropy
It's alright, and Beast Metabolism is very handy. It's been nerfed a little bit, so the damage isn't as good as it used to be. You'll also be stuck in wolf form for 3 days every full moon which isn't fun since many NPC's wont talk to you.
Cow
This is a very fun skill if you don't mind being a cow and perceived as a potential juicy steak by the village blacksmith. You can get free grass, use a movement speed skill, and pound monsters with your hooves for tons of damage while being the tankiest character in the game. Seriously, cows rule. The downside is that you have to max the grindiest crafting skill in the game to get the +2 levels needed for level 52 +40% damage gear from end game dungeons. This shouldn't be a problem once they raise cow level cap.
Deer
Like cow, but not as good. It has super jump though, which is handy in dungeon exploration and shenanigans. It also looks cool.
Spider
Spider has many poison attacks which are fun to use, and powerful. There's also lots of fun spider gear to be found, as many things increase poison damage. Spider + Druid can be very effective.
Pig
I don't know much about how well this skill functions end game, but it seems potentially as strong as deer. It's the least used skill in the game currently.
Crafting
I would suggest holding out on crafting until you have gold to spare for the training. Crafting can be very expensive. Have other players craft for you if you must, but start leveling your resource gathering skills such as Skinning, Butchering, and Foraging as quickly as you can.
Other Tips
Max Goblinese! It's a prerequisite for a lot of endgame goodies. Also, cap favor with NPC's. The higher your favor level with an NPC, the more gold they will have to buy stuff from you for.
Dungeons
Current progression for dungeons is Crypt -> Goblin Dungeon -> Kur Tower. If those are too crowded, you can visit the Myconian Cave, Basement Goblin Dungeon, and the Yeti Cave.

"EVE is likely the best MMORPG that you've never really understood or played" - Kyleran
Very nice read, I still need to check out quite a few other skills. Currently most all of my skills are at 20-35 as I'm very OCD about leveling them together so I can get a better understanding for all of it. So far Fire/Mentalism doesn't seem to be that bad. Decent compatibility for most group play with a lot of pack pulls, Fire/Psychology for solo play. Of course this is all very gear dependent on what traits you pick up on gear and making sure not to double stack on certain perks since they don't stack. But keeping one or two extra gear sets in your bags is always helpful in different situations.
Psychology though is a hard skill to pass up due to the fact it has a lot of self heal potential along with the splits makes it very good for solo'ing your way through places.

First of all I haven't played for 6 months but I want to add one thing to Lycan aka Wolf Form.
Back then the dmg was nerfed on some skills but there are or at least were some great items that increased the combo dmg quite a bit. The ae damage increase or hot increase made you more or less unkillable even after the nerf with some other high lvl or PvP items.
I really must try this game again these days.
btw. is there a maxed cheesemaker yet?
edit: about Dungeons, is the wolf cave not a good option anymore?
For general info there is a new player guide on the wiki.

Matter a fact , what ive done is go into the Player Vendor area in Serb, There is a Combat Skirmish trainer there,You do these fights on the spot and they take less than 30 seconds
I will choose a battle win it get paid at least 2000 councils ..This more than pays for my Arrows ..You get paid for each battle first time thru .. good money tho
At the end of the day ...............Arrows are Free and noone should be put off by the crafting hill to climb to attain arrows at this stage of the games economy ...
You can also put orders in with the Player Vendors
I am Fletching and Carpentry also ,., But i dont do it for Arrows at this time
Most abilities are trivial, just an icon to mash, example the 3 lines from the mentalism that give basics like +2 to regen or mana or armor, the number is to small to have any meaning, not like mobs sit there and say "ok take your time i'll wait".So combat is super handcuffed, never feel in control, would rather have an auto button that decides if i win or lose.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I was reading the first post and thinking it sounded exactly like when I last played a year or so ago... then I saw the date
Are there any decent sized active guilds on the server?

Elahil , has always sold arrows up to advanced which will take archery to lvl 30 , pretty cheap to .. Councils are very easy to make in this game ..
Also its very cheap to buy the stuff to craft 1k arrows . early on and very little time .. 1k arrows last a long time you may not even be able to shoot 1k Basics before needing to upgrade as ypou get alot of arrows back off corpses
I dunno , i never had trouble getting money or Arrows .. and thats from like i said 4/14 to date

Jessup, the Condescending Spider! (Psychology secondary)
You'll notice I was surprised to see a fellow spider in town, but that "Eee" isn't my excitement, it is what the game translated "Hey" into because I haven't yet fully learned how to speak words with my fangs (Beast Speech level is low).
EDIT- how do I resize a photo I upload into a post?
