I'm talking about any game where collecting is a fairly large part of the gameplay. Doesn't matter if you are collecting pokemon, customized cars, clothing, or what. Tell me what platform the game is for, the name, what you collect, and why it's your favorite.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story. So PM me if you are starting one.

that Moonrise is pretty sweet.
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

I've actually been dying for a pokemon-esque game on a mobile platform so I grabbed it in EA on Steam. I also love the team at Undead Labs. I say it's worth it but I think it will play out a lot better with a touch interface. Sometimes it's hard to quickly click between skills in combat with the mouse and it would be much easier to use your fingers instead.

For me the best collectible game will still be Magic the gathering, both with cards and PC. Well, there are also a few collictible tabletop games I like like Wings of War and Blue Max/Canvas eagles.
The whole collectible thing is kinda a scam though, you usually have to buy a load of crap to get lucky and get something useable. Heck, to get a great classic magic type 1 deck today you need to fork up something around $5000 or more.
That doesn't mean the games can't be fun but maybe they should focus more on providing cool different decks and less on getting people buy loads of card that they mostly throw away.
I played MtG for a good decade, starting with the beta set in my high school library before class, but my all time favorite game to play was Legend of the Five Rings.
It has so much depth to it. A player can win the game in multiple ways such as reaching an honor score of 40, Causing your opponent to drop to -19 honor, acquiring and playing all five of the ring cards or militarily wiping out all of your foes. Some factions can't win in certain ways because, for instance, they have no honor, and some factions can't lose in certain ways because they cannot be dishonored.
I tried Hearthstone and I hated it. I honestly can't believe that there are professional MtG players quitting to play HS. It's such a shallow and boring game. Not to mention there's no card trading so you literally have to dump thousands of dollars into the game to get the cards you actually want rather than just buying or trading. Not gonna happen in a bazillion years.

EQ2 was pretty good for collecting. You could do the actual collections (finding things on the ground), or you could collect certain items. Me... I actually enjoyed getting and completing as many quests as possible for my level range. There was just so many.
Hearthstone is pretty fun for collecting. I like doing some of the achievement just to get the cards lol. I do quite well without dishing out a ton of money. Though I have put some in.
My all time favorite which IMO does not exist anymore, was UO. I liked collecting in that game because I could also go all sims like and place things where I like in my home. Oh my... the struggle of having to buy a new home because you have run out of space for your quest bounty. I never did finish my red skeleton armour (can't recall the actual name).
I just want to throw in both Marvel Heroes and Path of Exile. Whether it be collecting the heroes themselves, the items, or collecting the gems you want to level up and play with or skills, these two games are quite decent for some collecting.
This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
But of course having a side game where players could own gladiators like in the Spartacus boardgame do have more appeal then pets. With the right setting (AoC would work or anything in ancient Rome) it could be an interesting minigame and side activety. Maybe a system where you could sell successful gladiators.
Add some Circus maximus styled chariot races as well and things would be even more interesting.
Not enough just to base a MMO on it but some more stuff to do in one.
Do STDs count?

Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you playing an MMORPG?"
I also enjoy collecting the seasonal items from gaming events "far too many to mention",i feel bummed out if i miss any of them.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Magic had a lot of crappy expansions (Fallen empires and whater the one after were called got me quitting the first time) but games can vary a lot.
A buddy and me are actually looking a bit on making our own game but it will be rather different from Magic and probably not with boosters but pre made boxes instead. Still in pre alpha state though but we got inspired a month or 2 back when we were watchings Gamers : Hands of fate. You really must watch that one if you are into CCGs.
If you ever get your CCG going send me a message I'd love to check out what you're doing!
Also thanks for the Hands of Fate recommendation, I watched every episode today and loved it! I also gotta give them props for repping Pathfinder, the best system out there for PnP gaming (imo)!
