I used to be like the OP as well. Played at beta, first free month, left. I started subbing at the end of last year, and I haven't looked back since. I just don't have as much fun playing any other game. I love the interactive stories, not enough non-tab targeting games out there that are in my opinion worth a flip, to care about the tab targeting. The music, the classic Star Wars sound effects I've grown up knowing since I was a child, all add to the atmosphere and draw me in. I hate trying to work with a f2p model on any game, so even with the option, when I want to play something, I sub to it. I've subbed to this game since oct. of last year and I've stayed subbed. I just won't look back at this point, because I've tried to look for greener pastures for myself, and I just can't find it. Those who are on the fence about trying, just go for it. If you like it look me up, I'm on The Harbinger server Empire side, the guild I'm in is a very populated and active guild focused on ops(raids) at the moment, but allow anyone in. I've had no problem getting someone to help me when I needed it. It is named after the upcoming expansion, "Knights of the Fallen Empire". My characters name is Visidian(main) and Vesavis(alt). I will help anyone who adds me to their friends list, as much as I can, but I strongly suggest joining the guild, for when I'm not on. For those who come, may the Force serve you well.
Yeah I bailed after beta and didn't even purchase it. Playing now and enjoying it. Still have large lag spikes though (only this game) that I have to figure out.
Quote/ instead they choose to monetize standard gameplay feature. And everyone accepts it without much word because it is a Star Wars game.
Yep, that's what turned me off from the game. Played it a lot. Leveled 8 classes. Then left. Came back for the x12 xp. Then left again. Now I'll wait to see how the new storylines go. It how they went free to play that lost me.

I'm glad they are returning to what actually worked for SWTOR, the story. The coming expansion I think will bring in more players who, like me, hated how they year after year decided that story was important but not really the focus anymore. Of course the SWTOR forum is filled with pvp'ers and "hardcore" players who can't stop complaining that the focus on story is wrong and this is a mmo so people should be forced to group and, blah blah. Just stop. SWTOR was (is) KOTOR 3 with a multiplayer part. I don't care about your love for group content. Go and play a random moba game or FPS game and stop annoying us solo players who play for the story.
There's a lack of understanding in SWTOR's f2p offering that just about everyone seems to fail at. The f2p is meant to offer players the chance to play the game and enjoy the individual world quest chains, and more importantly, your class quest chain. Similar to a KoToR game. It is NOT meant to be a true f2p mmo experience with their model. Yes, if you WANT to, you could play for some time without a sub, by purchasing unlocks and weekly passes. But the games design is basically this...
f2p=KoToR game with some multiplayer features.
Sub=Streamlined leveling, and MMO end-game content.
With the option of being able to use accumulated cash shop currency from time spent subbed. To still be able to return and play the game without paying at varrying intervals for casuals. And/or for returning players to peak at the current state of the game and it's content before resubbing.
That's it! If you want to play SWTOR as an mmo, you sub (at least most of the time). If you just want to play a star wars story-driven game without extensive mmo features. Then you play as a f2p and enjoy the story.
Understanding is half the battle people. See the walls of your preconceived box, and look beyond them. This was never meant to be a fully-f2p MMO.
There is no lack of understanding, when they ask money for long standing standard mmorpg feature such as mission reward, quickbar, hiding helmet slot, loot of group isntance; what kind of message it sends? It says : "we are bunch of greedy assholes who wants to slap you in the face for taking a peek at our game without paying anything even though we asked you to play for free". And why would any sane person spend money in this game after being treated that way?
Let's forget about the fact that it is a SW game and a EAWare game. Would you come out here and defend their f2p model with such passion? if this game were neither SW, nor a EAWare game; you would have come to this very forum and write negative review of this game.
Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.
I have to agree with Konfess, if you make your F2P just like a sub why would you go ahead and sub, it does have to be a bit of carrot and stick though
Nobody here asking to make f2p same as sub. We are saying not to monetize standard mmorpg feature like quickbar, mission reward, group instance(FP) loot, hiding head slot feature; these are features which have been standard in mmorpg ever since meridian 59.
And forget about f2p, what about people who actually paid for the game? i paid for standard edition game, i paid for hutt dlc, i paid for revan dlc(not to mention 18 months of sub) but as soon as i stop sub the game start blocking the above mentioned features, treating me the same way as someone who paid only 5$. If it is money that you bring into criteria, i paid a lot but still being treated like a cheap whore.
Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.

Explain in detail what standard UI elements, hide helmet option and quest rewards (theyre not even good and they annoy people) have to do with "MMO endgame"
In fact its YOU who dont understand SWTORs F2P offering, because if it was as you said it is, it would be fine.

I wouldnt worry about that, their metrics, as Ohlen said, show what people want and play, and thats story.
They are finally going to their roots, to what they said SWTOR would be before idiots in EA and LA decided "it must be more like WoW"
Quote/ instead they choose to monetize standard gameplay feature. And everyone accepts it without much word because it is a Star Wars game.

There is literally no meat to the game. They could have easily built the world into something worth playing in beyond the quest railroad, but the development team lacked anything approaching vision and just rode the IP. It was a thumbs down in 2012, and its still that way today.
MMORPG players are often like Hobbits: They don't like Adventures
"The F2P system treats F2P players so poorly." They aren't paying, they DESERVE to be treated poorly. Imaging if somebody walked into your house, sat at your table, eat your food, watched your cable TV, used your bathroom, slept in your bed, and laughed or got insulted when you asked them to play rent.
Games are made to make money, so their makers can pay bills. They are free so you can test out the game and see if you want to pay for it. Does my character move around smoothly or is it choppy and glitchy? Do I like the combat, crafting, and community (CCC)? Is the game fun to me? Most people answer yes to these questions. But answer NO, because they can't play for free at the same level as paying customers. The answer to them will always be, "To Bad, So Sad."
That is 1 way to look at it.
But you don't need the people in your house, they are GUESTS.
SWTOR however, is a BUSINESS, and in a BUSINESS, CUSTOMER=KING.
So you better listen to the customers, they are your income. That also means the POSSIBLE future customers.
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
Yeah, the 12x XP bonus really did hit home from a class storyline perspective. Which just shows that they should have focused a lot more on that aspect of the game instead of voicing every NPC who gives you a random "kill 10 worms" quest.
They could even have saved on space and kept large areas and the bonus series quests specifically for endgame, thereby creating even more content.
In each case, TOR has been the only game that made me roll a lot of alts too. You also just made me remember that I still have to go and finish my Agent's and Inquisitor's story too lol
You will enjoy the Agent far more by keeping it as one of the last ones. I recently revisited that storyline (since the IA was originally my second level 50 character) and I was rather amazed to see how much I recognized from the other storylines when going through Chapter 3. (So many familiar faces!)
Also, nice article, Victor! I think a lot of people can identify with what you wrote. I know I've seen many say the same things in the past after returning to the game from a long absence.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

A simple analogy is with retailers' shops. They don't have to let people in; they don't have to have carpets and attractive shelves - and indeed some don't; however they want people to come in and look around so that they might buy things. And with online purchasing growing they are trying even harder.
Gets even more interesting with sellers of clothes etc. They don't have to let people try things on. At least one retailer (selling shoes I think) introduced an entrance charge; not sure how that has played out but - clearly - they felt that all those f2p customers didn't deserve to be let into their shop.
If you think of a f2p game as "an online store" though you will get an idea of what the publisher is trying to do; entice people in, get them to stick around and then buy something.
Whilst Victor talked about leaving because of f2p I suspect that was just his way of justifying his decision and - as he goes on to say - he left because of e.g. side quest filler. And basically ran out of things to do that still kept him interested.
You know how you were super hyped for the Phantom Menace? Remember how you went to the theater to see Phantom Menace more than once? The second time around you went in thinking to yourself "Was it really that bad? Was I in a bad mood, or did I miss the good parts?". Then you left the theater the second time thinking "Man, it really is that bad. They seriously missed the mark entirely with this heap of trash". Some of us even went a third time just be really sure and left thinking "If I ever see George Lucas then I'm gonna smack him upside his head while yelling 'Jar Jar?!? Really?!'"
Well this is how I feel about SWTOR. I was super hyped and I bought the Collectors Edition for both me and my wife. We jumped into the game on launch day and immediately I started to worry. Just like in the opening scene of Phantom Menace when they hear a loud noise and immediately the lightsabers idiotically come out. I was building my character and I was like "Really? No sliders, no customization at all? Just pick one of four ridiculous body types?" Well okayyy, but I'm sure the game is good.
... and for a while it was. I enjoyed Tython quite a bit. Building my first lightsaber and then coming down the hill and battling that monster with it was the perfect way to close out the opening area. But then.... then you go to Coruscant and man do things take a steep nosedive from there. That was when I realized "Oh crap this is a corridor shooter with MMO elements. I'm being funneled around the world from one spot to another with lame fetch and kill quests". I walked into a room once and was immediately given a quest to kill 40 Justicars. I'll never forget that quest as long as I live. Here I am, a Jedi Consular, the galaxy's peacekeepers, and the game tells me that I need to slaughter 40 random people to complete a quest.
The character story's were even worse. They seemed to be written by someone who had never played an MMO before or someone who had no clue what was going on in the game. For example. I spent hours and hours on this one planet chasing an evil Sith Lord who had murdered countless people including Jedi. While I was on this planet, I lightsaber chainsawed my way through about 2000 imperial NPC's standing around pointlessly on the planet surface. When I finally catch this Sith Lord, defeat him in combat and I'm ready to deliver the killing blow on this piece of human scum... I'm suddenly told that this will give me dark side points?
Wait... wut? You wut M8? I killed around 2000 random nobody NPC's to kill this guy, but killing him is going to lead to the dark side?
This game is utter shit. Every once in a while some time will pass and I'll get that niggling feeling that "Maybe when I go back this time it will be better". Just like when I walk past my kids watching Phantom Menace. Sometimes I'll stop for a few minutes and watch it with them thinking "Maybe I was too harsh on this mo.... MEESA OWSA YOUSA LIFE DEBT!... oh fuck it"

If only that were true. No matter how many times you buy stuff, they still treat you like shit. As a potential shopper, I may look around and enjoy the atmosphere, but those bastards won't get a cent from me again. If they didn't want to do F2P they should have left it a sub game only. I was taught if you are going to do something do it right. They aren't doing it right, or anything close to right. There tons of examples of good F2P games that have subs that don't treat their F2P players like shit.
I will stay subbed for the new expansion... it will take I am sure (hope I am wrong) very little time to finish.
They are releasing around 16 chapters total I believe for the expansion. They are releasing a few up front, I can't remember how many, but after that I believe they're doing a chapter a month. So if I remember correctly you should have plenty to do for a while.
The "sub for a month" comment toward the end of the editorial was the only thing that ringed true to me. There is about a month's worth of fun at best in SWTOR, then you will inevitably find yourself killing through the static field of mobs realizing that there is no point to any of it outside of group dungeons, and then you will realize that the group dungeons have no interface with the rest of the gameworld resulting in your character being in a sort of limbo with no context in either gamespace.
Do yourself a favor and avoid the game, or at least don't spend any money on it.
And nothing said here is remotely true...clearly this person has not played swtor in a long long time. But of course the haters still are on their crusade to put down a video game they don't play...

If you did't like this game in 2012, unless your gaming tastes have changed between then and now, there's virtually no reason to have fallen in love with it today compared to when it originally launched. I'm always a little skeptical of articles like this because unless you quit the game due to a lack of an appearance tab, player housing (ie Trophy Room) or starfighter PVP, it's the exact same game.
The 12x XP means that you can play it much more like a single player RPG, but that will be going away in October. Even so, the 12x XP negatively highlights just how needlessly large and empty the zones can be. If you don't follow any of the side quests, you will traverse enormous swaths of land from quest update to quest update barely encountering any monsters or other players. Secondly, it exposes the folly of playing an MMORPG. If we're really having so much fun playing these games, why do we rely on a feature that allows us to skip 90% of the game's content in order to enjoy it? Shouldn't we want to complete the side quests or at the very least, shouldn't it feel like less of a grind?

Wouldn't mind a SWG 2.0 tbh, IF based in the original trilogy and if it was created without SOE/Daybreak and Smedley.
That said, the F2P did not put me of SWTOR tbh, it was the extremely railed themepark experience combined with the lack of freedom and the lacking game engine which was horrible.
But I liked the graphics though.
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
Also the last boxed game I've gotten, for me it was the CE as a present. Have also quit and returned to SWToR a couple times. Right now playing it casually with a group of friends, so now I actually have a character who is at Social 7 or 8 or so, lol.
As stated I would agree the game is worth a look again. Just buy a sub though, easier to just bypass all the silly limitations noted.
I hate EA and everything EA has ever touched. That being said, all the irritating blockers and limitations can be easily bypassed by subscribing. Not every class story is worth the price of admission, but enough that I'm not gonna squabble over the $15 per month. I guess I'm from the previous generation who were accustomed to paying a monthly fee for MMOs. For me, if I want to play SWTOR for a month or two, $15 is a small price to pay to dodge all those stupid F2P trappings. If they didn't have a sub option, free would not be cheap enough to make me play.
True.

I remember when swtor first announced f2p and how everybody here was going crazy about it as if it was the end of the world.. now 95% of mmos have a f2p option. In my own opinion SWTOR does f2p just like everybody else, it's a greedy way to make extra money. Personally I can do without the f2p option.. I sub when i want to play the game.. when im not playing i dont sub. Its simple for me, ive never really had to deal with the f2p option. If you want to play this game always sub so you dont have to deal with the silly limitations.
TBH if you are a f2p player in this game, you cant really complain as they gave you the full game (really) for free. So they had to nickel and dime you for stupid shit to get their money back. Do I agree with tactic? No.. but I understand it from a business pov. Again.. just sub if you want to have full game experience.

The Starwars movie that when i was 15year get out in korea. But. We can usually see by online these day. So. I felt to change the world in game a lot. is trick that I didn't see the starwars movie. I hope be happy in mmorpg.com peoples today. Thanks a lot.
