A virtual world, inhabited by the players

Hello MMORPG experts,

What interests me about MMORPG, is the idea that a virtual world is given in the hands of the players, and in which the players have the freedom to contribute to the good of the world... or to destroy it.

I find fascinating when players are enjoying the same environment, while having different occupations. They all together fight to combat evil, gather materials, craft items, build houses, establish guilds.

And I like games with freedom and not many blocking mechanics.
I don't like strict level based systems where part of the content become pointless when the area is grey (lower level), or in which you can't eat a loaf of bread unless you are at least level 25.
I think that mechanics like this remove the freedom to roam back and forth into the world at will, and encourage the playstyle of levelling for the sake of levelling, and that's not the "virtual world" I am looking for.

I also like when crafting, gathering and other professions are well made. I like games in which you can craft / build / develop stuff, in which players are contributing to the world and can impact its scenery/economy/something.

I enjoy games with housing, farming, and all sort of mini-games and minor mechanics. I like to spend time in the game doing things that are not only KILL KILL KILL KILL.

It is important to me that the game is still under development, and it has not been abandoned or semi abandoned by its devs.

Do you have any suggestions?

The Repopulation is still under development and is on its last alpha stage. You can take a complete non combat progression on this game (crafting, entertainment, politics etc) you can get in directly from their store or via Steam early access ($20)
I have high hopes for that game but I have kinda played it inside out at the moment and waiting to play on release.
A couple of this community's members suggest Age of Wushu ( EU version Age of Wulin) and I can't believe how many nice features this game has and how underrated it is. I have seen Kickstarter campaigns getting millions and tons of attention promising half of what this game already has.

Shards Online might be interesting too - where you can set the rules of your own world and change it as you like.
It is still in early access/alpha though

This pretty much sums up Avalon - it's a text based game but is ALL about freedom - to destroy or to create. It's been running for 25 3/4 years and in that time players have driven the entire game's history; rewriting laws, destroying whole cities, invasions, starving half the world with their farming embargoes and that sort of stuff.

The amount of freedom offered is incredible - build your own houses, plough your own fields, over 60 different commodities that can be made using realistic methods (drilling oil or digging clay or mining ores), all fully fleshed out player governments to play politics, awesome PVP (all skill/real time based, not automatic) and 3D warfare with trenches and tunnels and siegetowers etc. Many meta-games within one.

Check this out: www.avalon-rpg.com/history - the timeline going back to November 1989 (it's a work in progress I think but you get the idea).
