imageThe Five Most Significant Korean MMOs - The List at MMORPG.com

Here in North America, anyone who is even a semi-serious MMOG enthusiast is well aware that Korea is a major producer. We can all name a number of titles developed there, and probably at least a couple of leading publishers and/or developers. That said, it's pretty safe to assume that few of us are closely familiar with the industry there. So you might find that this list of the five releases I feel have had the greatest impact on the global landscape includes one or more you wouldn't expect.

Great writeup. LIke was said, many "western" gamers wont even know of those games, or studios, but it cant be denied they have contributed to the genre as a whole. I think this also further proves the divide between "western" gaming and "eastern". What works for KOR/China hardly ever works for the US/Eur. And this shows why we need things like "localization". Its not just about translating languages, its because our gaming preferences and desires are very very different. While most of those games flopped hard here, some never even heard of, they thrived in Kor and Chinese markets.

I didn't know Lineage was 2.5d.  It's cool to see the pic.  I thought I had played it, but that must have been Lineage 2.

Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security.  I don't Forum PVP.  If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident.  When I don't understand, I ask.  Such is not intended as criticism.

MiR 2 was never near the topchart because people were so busy with MiR 1. The no download charge is a funny joke when most of the MMORPGs are played at a lan center, why is that even relevant (in fact no MMORPG ever charged box price in China until WoW hit the China market)? MiR 2 was completely ruined by the China publisher as it didn't deliver the hyper, AT ALL (also very poorly advertised, hardly anybody knew the game). All Hail MiR 1, Long Live The King. Reference: a Chinese kid who grew up on MMORPG in the 90's in China urban city. (BAMM PWND =P)

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.

MIR2 was fucking horrible in any way possible, actually even in some impossible ways. I can't remember if it was a beta or if I suffered therough the release, the controls, the latency, the grafics...it was vile. And Diablo 2 was still fresh, MIR2 never stood a chance.

I find it strange that you chose to not include either Joymax's Silkroad Online or Digimon. For a few years in the mid 2000s SRO was 2nd only to WoW in terms of monthly earnings and had over 20 servers holding 5,000 players each. Most of those players payed $15/mo for "Premium Gold Tickets" which allowed them to log on when the servers were full, which they often were. Innovative way for a F2P game to collect a monthly fee to pay. When you logged on a player (or gold bot) that did not have premium was kicked.

Silkroad represented everything I hated to see in MMOs.
