My Problem with MMOs.
Step back in time to 1998. Little was heard about these new so called Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games. So when they were released, they were new and interesting and also exciting to play.
Well, times changed and we got wind of so called MMORPGs at a stage of testing and we could sign up for a early access for no cost. Kind of help the development team so to speak. (beta test)
As time passed we got to hear about these MMORPGs several years before they got to Beta testing and now we could comment on entire process form early artwork to end stage beta testing.
Then we got to not only hear about the early development but we now could PAY for access to, you know, pay for the development cost, but was called early access or pre beta testing.
Well it didn't stop there though. Now can get early access to ideas not even processed past the initial artwork and pay for this through crowd funding.

You used to be able to go and buy a house you like. Then you could go and see one being build and buy into it at that stage. Then you could actually pay in advance to completely design a house yourself before it's even built at all!
I mean, what the hell!
You say that like it's a bad thing. Sure, you can't play the game right away, but I don't think there is any misdirection involved there. I'd rather pay to help get a game I want to play made in 7 years then play whatever sequel/clone is availlable at the time. Invest in your entertainment future!
I do agree that a lot of these early access games never really become what they are promissed to be, but I can't say much better for any traditionally developed games. Like movies the fact is most of them will be let downs.
On a side note, I think they should have some kind of matrix on this site, where you can match what you like in MMORPGs vs the matrix to see what games match.
So you coudl pump in Anime style, PvP and housing for example and see what matches with strengths in those areas..

That is about right.
Now think about this a min.
You and say 5000 people put up 100 bucks each for development of your game for 7 years to a team of 10 people. 500,000 buck seems like a lot of money to invest at once but now let's put the math to it. 10 people 7 years get 500,000 to work maybe 80 hrs a week on a game that may or may not be remotely successful. These people also have to spend around 40,000 for a single server, which a MMO requires around 40 cores to sustain 10,000 Concurrent connections. The initial cost of a server cluster to put out this game and if successful can even function cost about 400,000 dollars initial investment for hardware alone.
Now take in that these 10 people have to divide the remaining 100,000 amongst themselves for 7 years for labor giving each one approx. 1,400 a year income.
In seven years I will gross 470,000 at my job. The chance of any one of these games ever getting past initial kickstart is very very slim.
