I feel like... That picture is a copyright claim waiting to happen. Isn't the Mindflayer 100% owned by Wizards? I swear to gods that looks identical to one. From the robe to... Well, obviously the squid face.
I like to complain about games.

It does look incredibly similar but they did change a few things. The tentacles coming out of the side of the face instead of the middle and the cthulu like badge in the middle is different than the skull on the mindflayer.

It could also me a Walktapi from Rune Quest.  As long as they don't call it a 'Mindflayer' or 'Walktapi' or any other established fictional name, the image of an imaginary creature isn't really protected by copy right law.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

It's pretty different than the standard 'flayer/Illithid. I mean the general look is the there, but the minutia is different enough to avoid any legal issues.

It amazes me they both still keep cranking out expansions....On my server today in EQ1 there were 200 traders lol....On top of that they still charge 15 bucks a month for those that feel they need to have the latest and greatest.....Just don't get it for such  old games...EQ2 was a graveyard last time I logged in there.

Eh, no. Not even Tolkiens family can sue you for that since they are mythological creatures from Norse mythology. That would be like suing someone for using angels or demons.

Orcs were invented by Tolkien though.

New games are about the same as the old games in terms of gameplay, they are just dumbed down versions of the gen 1 MMO's.  People have invested a lot of time in the old familiar games and have friends there.  They don't see any reason to start the same old shit somewhere else.

Years ago I played EQ, but I wonder how mind numbingly slow it would be nowadays to get back into it.  Then I really enjoyed EQ2 & thought it was really well done overall.  I even favored EQ2 over WoW, but I just got SO tired of SOE's antics.  I even bought a few items in Vanguard because, though it never reached it's potential, I liked it & wanted to support it.  It's a shame it was closed but understandable.  I stopped subscribing to their games & ended-up playing EQ2 a bit at a time F2P but it has been a good long while.

For me the straw that broke the camel's back in EQ2, a camel mount would be awesome, was when I was gifted a free home by a player in E2.  I was absolutely astonished at the generosity.  About a month later I was logged-on & saw something on sale that I remember that the generous player had mentioned he/she has wanted.  I plucked open my wallet & bought some SC, which is now DB, then purchased the item to gift as a proper thank you & subscribed for a month.  All for not, because I still wasn't able to send the thank you gift.  I contacted CS & they explained the policy & I explained the intention & overall SOE didn't care.  Funny thing since that time, I still log-in occasionally, you can now mouse-over & it will state you have to be a subscriber for a month & A DAY before sending a gift.

I made a vow not to donate another cent to SOE since & have stuck to it.  At least it has improved to where the notification is on the screen instead of having to remember the fine print of a policy on another page.  I hope Daybreak not only considers improving the games themselves in various ways, but considers some of those types of policies.  I know some have to be the way they are, but that intention of immediate financial gain, SOE's style, can be very short-sighted.  Now I miss my Armored Rhino mount.

That's not "exactly" true. "Orc" comes from the old english. It is an ogre in mythology. He did take the idea and then sort of mold it to his own use. But you should be able to use "Orc" and not get sued. This says he "evolved" them. I'm thinking an educated man such as himself knows of the usage and then took the idea and fit it into his world. http://middle-earth.xenite.org/2011/10/05/did-j-r-r-tolkien-invent-orcs/ This is sort of interestign provided it's correct. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orc

Yeah they have the names, but not the image. That likeness appears all over the place in fantasy games.

Well, you learn something every day... I do have read Norse languages (the thing Tolkien was an expert on) but my old English is pretty limited sadly.

Wonderful topic though. And in any case suing over stuff like this is silly, while mindflayers might be an invention of Ed Greenwood or one of the other TSR world designers they have themselves borrowed so much from other sources that the morl of the whole thing is pretty suspect at best.

Then again, anyone doing something similar to Harry Potter gets sued even to Harry himself is copied almost to 100% from Neil Gailmans "Books of magic" (no parents, same glasses, same look, same friggin owl and so on) so I guess I don't exactly understand the ethics of things like this.

Tim from "Books of magic", years before Harry Potter.

This is really amazing, i am not a fan of Daybreak but it is amazing how they publish newer contents for their games so regularly while other big names who are making several times more money only provide excuse for the lack of content. If only Daybreak's customer service were as good as their developers.

Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.

I have found their customer service better than NCSofts. The developers are top notch in my opinion. I have always loved the content releases from EQ2. Favorite MMO for quite some time now.
SOEs wasn't so bad but tDaybreak now hire the same people as both NC Soft and Blizzard have gone over to as well. They might have slightly different orders on what to do and not to do but it is the same customers service.

There are in fact very few MMOs that still have their own service department. I guess it is easier this way, when one company have many games you don't constantly need to hire or fire people (MMOs tend to jump up after an expansion to drop until the next one comes out and certain times they get bugg issues in masses). There was a thread about it earlier this week (too lazy to find it and link).
