I called it 'vaporware.' Were you correct?

I see the word vaporware thrown around a lot on these forums. This poll is to those who have. Did the game you called vaporware actually turn out to be vaporware or was it released? (Just for a little fun, so don't get your back up, if someone mentions your game) The rules: ** No hedging. Don't say that it was released, but was so different that it might has well be vaporware. Was it or wasn't it released? ** Don't vote because of EQNEXT or other games that aren't due yet. No fair. Just the ones that never materialized after due date. ** Try to be as honest as possible. Don't make yourself a prognosticator after the fact. For shame. ** If you can, list the game in comments. More fun for the group. It is anonymous to protect the innocent.

Honest answer, some people act as if this is a big accomplishment.  Sadly, I believe for them it is one of the biggest successes they have going on in their life.

I have yet to call any game "vaporware."

Their had better be a bunch of the second option because I remember everybody saying Darkfall was vaporware back in the day.

Unfortunately their will be a bunch of votes for the third option because of misplaced hatred or just utter stupidity.

I don't use the term vaporware,i merely rate games after i see them and then usually rate them as "budgetware" gaming.

There have been a lot of games that were simply quick cash grabs full of promises then immediately after scamming people on those promises the game goes into maintenance mode.

This is the huge problem i have with all these new scam games coming out, they claim they are going f2p but that never happens until they already make a ton of money first from early access to Beta promises.

I would say ALl the games that fall into that category make 90-95% of their profits before the game officially releases and that alone is very sad.As soon as they see their game is making very little, they announce a release and rely on the cash shop.

Gamer's should quit giving  out free money because i have not seen one single game worth  that free handout and there has already been several hundred of them.

I said this about Xsyon once.  It was wrong. . sort of.  There was a game so it was mostly wrong. . the game wasn't what it should have been and has been on life support since launch so I will say I was 90% wrong.

Most games announced aren't vapourware, but alot are half-assed attempts at games. Many said DFO was vapourware, but they were proved wrong and we got arguably the best pvp ever released for its brief period of 3 years.

I think it's a totally different thing if they do put something out or if it's totally different then they said it would be.  I think due to the creative process any project can take on a life of it's own and develop in unforeseen ways.

Unforeseen events can make the final product better or worse then what was intended.  That's why I usually wait and see what the finish product actually is before committing to it most of the time.

Take SC for example.  Unless those people are coding gods with all those ship details and starport details and adding hundreds of players, it's going to take a super computer to run the game at max settings.  So I'm thinking the game is going to have to look a lot different to be playable then the videos are showing.  Just have to wait for final stress testing to be sure.

Not interested in games before they are substantially complete, so I have never had cause to use the term.

I dono, ark has really detailed dinosaurs, and that doesn't need a super computer, and its poorly optimized. Space games kinda are easier on a computer, because there is nothing there. Look at eve, those ships look rather nice, but as soon as you go into a space station as your character, you need a high end graphics card.

i along with a lot of others predicted that darkfall would never come out. can't really blame us though, it was in development a long time with very little info about it for years.

I was wrong about DFO, really didnt think that would make it.

Citadel of Sorcery is on my current Vape watch list, but I hope it one day comes out.

Ultima Online 2 and Embers of Caerus come to mind, although I'm in the delusionally optimistic category as opposed to the topic of this thread.

I actually backed the latter on KS when I had first heard of it  B)

I was wrong about Duke Nukem.... but hey, it was 15 years, so it should count for something.

Ditto, after 8-10 years I started calling it vaporware myself.

Something can be vaporware and still eventually come out.
It's that whole, unlikely to ever see the light of a display screen thing that makes it vaporware.

For example, for a long time, Duke Nukem Forever was vaporware, then that last company took over and actually got something done and released. It's no longer vaporware, but it might have been better if it had remained that way.

Skirting a technicality.  Technically everything doesn't exist, until it exists.  That isn't the intent.

fun topic sorta. calling out vaporwares is fine as some sort of small ironic entertainment but too much luck is involved since we never get enough true information about what was actually going on.

when sillent hillS was announced people expected a 2016 or at worst 2017 release. that implies the game should have been in development since 2014 or before that for it to happen yet with all the big names involved Konami cancelled it. that means they mostly worked on PT and not that much on the actual game otherwise cancelling it would be a bigger disaster financially. so it was a vaporware. how many people seen that one coming?

i never even tried to callout vaporwares though personally but it's fun if you do and guess right. (and also ironically tragic)
