SWTOR or GW2?

IkedaIkeda Member RarePosts: 2,751
Headline says it all:

If I had to choose how to spend my weekend (which has already started), which expansion would/should I play?

GW2 costs the box.

SWTOR costs a  monthly sub.

GW2 I think my highest character is 30-ish.

SWTOR I played through the Hutt Cartel stuff (on 2 characters)

I don't group, I tend to solo.  Led to issues in both games.

I think, if you like too solo a lot neither is a good game, but given those choices, if you can get over the gambling boxes, pay 2 win cash shop of SWTOR, than that is a better game for the money, esp since, the expansion, is total focused on single player.

I would suggest neither, you're a solo player, spend the weekend mowing lawns, save up money for fallout 4, buy it and sink thousands of hours in at your own leisure.

I'd recommend SWTOR.  I've been playing it since it came out, and the new stuff is definitely more solo focused.  I've played many characters through solo (as well as duo with my wife).  I believe many of the old Heroic 4 missions are now Heroic 2+ which means you can go back and solo them with one of your companions if you wish. I also recommend SWTOR if you enjoy the cinematic part - KotFE is absolutely awesome in that respect.  I just finished the first 9 chapters last night.  Haven't seen what it's like after that just yet.  As far as GW2 I'm a little out of touch now; I played GW1 for years and supported GW2 at the beginning until my account was mistakenly banned and it took me out of playing it for awhile until I got my account back and that coincided with the time SWTOR started up so I've been playing SWTOR ever since.  Even after trying ESO, and WILDSTAR I've stuck with SWTOR (though I am checking out SKYFORGE at the moment).

I didn't like either.....Both are just constant quest play.

I haven't played both games in a while, but TOR was defintely even more solo-oriented than GW2. It also has the superior leveling / story experience imo.

GW2 does have better PvP in general, but I'm not sure if that's your thing.

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

You can play the class story to the end on any class in SWToR for free. Dont like the current direction of GW2. So SWToR would be what I picked =-)

I dont think you have played GW2 lol

Thanks everyone.  I had almost all the classes in SWTOR through the first game but I didn't play the storylines through Hutt.  The 12x incentivized playing but then ultimately I just burned out.  GW2 I hadn't really played since Launch so I figured there might be an actual world to explore (I remember content being kinda eh).  GW1 I spent so much time on (especially doing my stuff for my Hall for GW2... that mostly ended up being wasted).

There is really only 2 story lines in Hutt (Republic and Empire) and only 1 going through the Revan content (with one unique class mission part way through).  GW1 was a great time for me.  I may have been one of the last to get a GWAMM title because I finished it a few months after GW2 launched when GW1 was almost deserted.  God bless the 2 people who congratulated me at the time.  I spent time maxing out the Hall too but I did like the gauntlets I got for it in GW2.

    Easy, both.

When you want story and slower pace - SWTOR

When you want exploration, faster paced actiony combat - GW2

Neither, spend the weekend reading a self help book about making decisions for yourself and then stare at the hypno-toad...  err I mean TV

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

Haven't played STW for more than 3 hours, but from those 3 hours of STW play, I felt that GW2 is more versatile. You can solo, or group, or whatever you want.

I've been enjoying the expansion so far, and the revamped low level content. I never really got into GW2, so take that as my very biased opinion.  :p

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

I have been doing this in SWTOR for the last couple of weeks. Hated the game on release but I'm enjoying it now. Easy to solo and with some forethought the Heroic +2s are soloable. GW2's difficulty was more variable, and I found in the higher levels you're best off staying near others for safety- not really group play but parallel play.

neither, but if you had to choose, then GW2

    I have played both.
GW2 all the way for me... specially if you don´t plan on paying a sub....
SWTOR is NOT FTP! It´s more like FreeToTry...

it depends what you're looking for.  The swtor expansion is better initially, but will tail off at end game.  Gw2 will be better in the long run, although I'm a little disappointed with hot.  If you're not worried about falling behind I'd say to play swtor first then pick up gw2 in a couple month if you're still interested.  although I'm just playing both.

GW2 and SW:TOR the gameplay is completely different, so comparisons are kind of difficult seeing as one is fantasy and the other is also SciFi based, so not just a case of comparing apples and oranges, but probably apples and mango's.
My own preference is SW:TOR, it has a good solo experience, with a lot of storyline, and now you can use companions as you wish in whatever role supports your class specialisation makes things a lot easier, and imo, a bit more fun. You can pretty play through the whole game solo, the only things you really need to group for, are the flashpoints/operations, and its a bit like end game raiding, if your not into it, then you don't have to do them. That isn't to say that you can't group with others in SW:TOR, as you definitely can, and there are lots of missions on the different planets that you can in a group, before you reach 'end game' and it does enhance the gameplay imo. In terms of PVP though, there aren't many MMO's out there that don't do it better, although it is fairly easy to get into, it didn't feel all that rewarding, maybe this will be addressed in the future? there are 2 space combat minigames too, one an on rails shooter, and one a pvp team based game using a variety of ships, which is more fun, but, takes a lot of time to get good at, mostly because abilities have to be unlocked on the ships, personally i think the space based pvp game is much better than the ground based ones, at least in terms of having fun while playing them.

I've got to think SWTOR would be the clear winner for a solo player.  The best part of SWTOR is story which is almost completely solo.

Also, if you already played gw2 when it was new and shiny and only made it to the 30s what makes you think there will be something to hold your attention this time around?  Granted they just added raiding but not like that's going to do anything for a solo player.

ill say try both :) but so far i love the new expensjon for swtor :) great story ^^

I would say try out gw2. It sounds like you've played swtor quite a bit already. Gw2 will be quite new to you. Also the new expansion is amazing.

Core ge2 is free now so you can just jump back in for that. The expansion at the moment is good if you want a harder open world and a feeling of exploring maps. The new legendary bosses that I have fought have a nice difficulty to them after playing easy mode for so long. They aren't super punishing but do ask for a greater degree of ogranisation between randoms.

HOWEVER if gw2 doesn't really catch you I wouldn't recommend it. I've been wanting more out of the game and I am having a good time. Waiting for tomorrow's patch where they remove a grindy requirement to a particular story step.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?
