i have been playing WoW for the last few weeks, .. But in a different way..
i leveled a monk all the way to level 85 playing trough all the zones stories, by level locking every few levels.. And i must say, there is so much content in this world, its ubelievable.. There really is a lot to explore and enjoy..
Now i know this is not the way a lot of people like to play MMOs these days, because in general they rush to the endgame and calling the stories merely a neccesary grind...
i myself would love to see some kind of challenge servers, with much harder content in the open world, and requiring people to finish stories and zones before being able to advance to the next level... Where some content would actually be hard to solo and chalenging players, and where content would adapt to the number of players.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

And, no, I'm pretty sure Blizzard will never make the game more challenging. On the contrary.
why would anyone pay $180 for the year of waiting for more content? i have run all content many times over the years....
Post-WoD however longer term players - with everything maxed - have had to make a choice.
I never once felt like Wow was a game to explore,my biggest peeve when i stopped playing first week it released was it's poor graphics/textures and starting in the middle of some cheap looking caravan after playing two games where i started in great big cities was a huge letdown.
As far as content, that seems to be an area MOST gamer's confuse standard quests with content. They are called quests,i don't call that content.Content to me are ideas that stray away from quests and are ideas i won't see in other games. If i simply want to do 3 thousand quests to say i am doing lots of content "already done that in EQ2" then i can get that hopping from any game to any game just to do quests.I also never once in my many returns to Wow did i feel any good story happening, just what i would call quest lines.
Now if i look at what every game is doing for quests, does Wow have a few good/better ones, yes it does but the rest of the game does not entice me to play it because it is not the way i want a game designed, like i said i already get a better version of Wow playing EQ2.I hopped from EQ2>Wow back to EQ2 in a week and i was not even a EQ2 fan yet,the two games imo were miles a part,Wow just seemed like a EQ2 wannabe and imo still is.
Now if Wow was say like FFXI designed to play on a PS2/multiple platforms including Xbox, then i would say cut Blizzard some slack, but it was designed for PC so no excuse on it's many downfalls.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Assassin's Creed! New Civ Beyond Earth. Divinity coming. So many games. And any you miss will usually be on sale for c. a months sub.
I know of at least one guild that uses the exp mechanism to play out entire strings of raiding content - at appropriate level. Much old content is still alive. That may meet your challenge requirements, as well as provide unique alternate leveling.
He wants to spend his time and his money playing WoW then that is fine and I dont see the point in telling him otherwise.
You're not suggesting that WoW ever had a decent story or any quest, do you?
Not when ESO does it several times better, it's not even a comparison really..
Again, maybe he doesn't like ESO. Maybe he really does like the questing and story of WoW more. Maybe he doesn't like seafood and likes beef, do you have a problem with that as well?

Currently: Games Audio Engineer, you didn't hear what I heard, you heard what I wanted you to hear.
