Japan and South Korea's gaming market is about to crash.

KiyorisKiyoris Member RarePosts: 2,130
For one simple reason.

They are what is now called "super aging countries".

Japan and South Korea, have the fastest aging populations in the world, and have the oldest people in the world.

They have very low birth rate, and more importantly, extremely low immigration.

This is without a doubt, going to affect their gaming market.

So when you say "about to crash" you mean.. like... in 20-30 years?

    Thanks for the head's up!

Long term problem and not 'about to.'  Also, why won't the people who are aging continue to play games?

Aging, last time I checked... was a process of time.  Thus, their demographics today, are pretty close to what they were last year and will be pretty close to what they will be next year.

But again, thanks for the warning.  I'll be sure to sell my Nintendo stock in the 2030s

    From the above article:

" In February this went a step further as the government essentially capped gaming revenue. Today, an individual in Korea can spend no more than US$300 on online games per month." and "With the little money that they can spend on MMORPGs, they were not that interested in the local titles."

So basically in Korea, spending $300 a month on MMOs is considered little?

that is crazy to think about.  is the whole of Korea addicted to video games?  so much so that they have to be regulated by the government?  I honestly just thought the idea of a "Korean gamer"  was just a borderline racist stereotype.

Could you please explain exactly why you chose to use the phrase "about to crash" to describe a slow incremental decline over many decades?

Also, in a case of prophetically bad timing you released this shocking revelation just as China reversed it's one child policy so we can expect significant population growth in the region if not in Korea and Japan.

Probably for the same reason we got JPGs of sensational headlines instead of links to actual information.

LOL.  This is what happens when folks cannot extrapolate on their own...

The SAME people playing games, will pretty much be the SAME people playing them tomorrow.   Over TIME things will change from today.   As others have pointed out, using the phrase "about to crash" was blatantly misleading, and incorrect.

Or tell you what.  How about you tell me when it's going to crash.  Is it next week? next month?  What's ABOUT TO mean?   Then you come back at that time and prove you were right and the next Nostradamus.  Until then pull a Houdini for us.

They didn't really remove the restriction but rather upped it to two children allowed.

While some people here are scoffing at the notion that an aging population will have a negative effect on the economy it indeed will.

Dunno if I would go so far to say the mmo scene is going to collapse though.

This is why sweets and fast food are so cheap, to kill off people before they get too old.

Once japan and korea eat western garbage everything will be ok, oh and mass immigration from 3rd world countries ofc.

Japan's recessioin, was linked to the aging population. It hit gaming companies hard.

It was in 2014, spare me your jokes if you don't understand the thread.

I should be dead by then!

Also, how are they aging faster?  Here, in America, people age 12 months every year.  How many months do they age per year?

People are talking about the population as whole when they talk about aging of countries, not individuals.

Regardless of if the assertions are true or not, your concern if these claims turn out to be true is gaming?

    :)

'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

When your head is stuck in the sand, your ass becomes the only recognizable part of you.

No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.

yes, because early sigs show many japanese and korean industries are imploding, one is gaming

Japan also has the highest debt to GDP in the world, which is affecting the economy too

gaming is a large industry in korea and japan, it is a measurement stick like any other

You say crashing, I say normalizing. Lots of businesses do this over time. Industries become bloated, and sooner or later they have to cut back and find a healthy level. Some other industry will fill the gap, and although it could cause a recession in the gaming industry, I am pretty sure the countries in question will survive the Gaming Apocalypse!!!!

So put your wonderful clairvoyance to work and short all Japanese and S Korean gaming stocks!!

Maybe give Warren Buffet a heads up too...
