Ahead of the commencement of Blizzcon 2015, Activision-Blizzard has announced the formation of a new film studio called (unsurprisingly) Activision Blizzard Studios. The first announced project is a film based on the Call of Duty series followed by an animated television series based on the Skylanders IP.

Maybe they want to avoid any more problems and just do it themselves?

they should work on wc4, and a new engine for wow with better graphics and animations.

They have a lot of money, and buying that mobile game for 5 billion shows they have money to invest in many directions. Even though that ivnestment on paper makes 100s of millions per year. but if the turnover is 10 years then I would say its a risky investment since those games are easy to imitate and they are trying to make a profit, and in 10 years they cant really sell those games for anything, so their money will be from continued streams of revenue from active players.

Strange that WoW, would bother to buy another game maker than make its own clone. After all, its billions of dollars. WoW cost a lot less and is probably much more complicated to make.

With the rise of digital content and availability of ondemand video streaming I think it makes sense.  They can easily make a ton of video game based content and distribute it themselves to their niche markets.

If they do this correctly it will probably open a new trend.  I can see many game companies liking the idea of creating entertaining content that furthers their stories and worlds.

If done right it is probably much cheaper than doing it in game.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

I dont know about anyone else, but the Warcraft trailer (newer one anyway) makes the movie look a bit lackluster. They should've followed SE example with the FF movie (15 years ago? or something?) and did it all in CGI lol. The story was questionable but it looked good visually.

Still can't get my head around why the heck they even bought King. Especially at that amount of cash! Their first game was a huge success, but their last games were just copies of the same formula and tanked pretty bad to be honest, not nearly doing as well as their first. Being horrible cash grab games at that. So, they either have so much cash, that this was just a scheme to avoid taxes or something. Can't find any other sane explanation for this.

I imagine, what you think of King's success, and what the truth is must differ greatly. You don't pay that much for a company that isn't worth it.

and I think it's important to point out, that building a successful mobile gaming company from scratch requires more Than just money. They're not only buying the assets and name of King but also their developers and development tools.

Does this mean the cutscenes will now move to the "big screen" instead of being in the game ? ;D

Who is actually going to watch a call of duty movie?
..its a war themed movie...with call of duty stamped on it.

I don't think that war movies have a huge mass market appeal?
