ISP just bumped up my speed again

Just got word my ISP doubled my speed today to 300 Mb/s up 30 Mb/s down. Not as impressive as fiber networks since they have not reached my neighborhood yet, but pretty good for copper wires. I know my ISP is working on DOCSIS 3.1 which is capable of 10Gb/s up and down. They are also working on a stop gap of rolling a hybrid fiber network towards new apartment developments which are capable of 2Gb/s up and down. That is still several years out for me.

Honestly, I don't know what to do with more than 100 Mb/s download. It only takes me a couple minutes to fill my SSDs if I wanted to. I can probably downgrade to the next tier, but that's only $10 less a month.

would love to have that kind of bandwidth, as it is, living in the countryside in the UK is something of a problem, so only have  6mb/s down stream, and around 0.7mb/s up stream, on the other hand, its unlimited download/upload and costs just £16 a month including telephone line rental etc. with free evening and weekend calls. Even so i would trade it for better bandwidth any day of the week.

In the US what has been happening in Rural Areas is tethering to a cell network. My Cell Network gets 17 Mb/s down, 10 Mb/s up. Its coverage is spotty though. There are networks like Verizon that have decent rural coverage and are good for tethering. Not sure how expensive that will be in the UK with all your Socialist tax policies driving up costs.

Hoping Google Fiber forces my states ISP's to compete better.  But I'm not inner city or even close to Nashville.

Mine keep getting slower as more people switch from dial up to radio (the only option apart from satellite where I am)

currently getting about 125kb/sec... On 3Mb service

They PS4 we got for xmas - I turned it on to install updates so it would be ready by Christmas, it only has an estimated time of >99 hrs to complete... So it might be done by the 25th.

You are right, this is an option in my area too, and on my cell I can get better than 50Mb/sec on a good day. It's just capped to like 2G/month... So essentially useless for downloading anything. It works for a lot of people who just do things like email and Facebook, but updating my Steam account will blow past that in a hurry.

Holy shiza, where do you live?  I'm in Fallbrook (north SD county) so I'm curious if COX has the same service out my way.  Funny enough, I work for a company that manufactures telecom splice enclosures, etc in Temecula.

Unfortunately, Fallbrook is TWC territory. They also have a 300 Mb/s service, but it's TWC. They probably don't have the infrastructure to support it. They also enforce data caps. I know in Escondido they have Cox service with 300 down. Also a couple new developments have Gigablast service in Escondido which have 1Gb up and down running the same price as my current service. You would need to research which developments offer this service.

What's your monthly bill if you don't mind me asking? I'm paying $66 through cox in Florida for 20 down and 6 up

I'm in MS paying 68 a month to Cable One for 100 down and 5 up. I actually get 113 through speed test.

Yeah, I have TWC now.  I didn't so much research when I moved into this place (been there a little under a year) as I needed to move ASAP.  My company actually provides the splice enclosures that COX uses for their FTTH projects :).  Well, not every single market, but a lot of them.

Edit: Also, do you work in the industry?  You seem to track OSP infrastructure pretty closely

Speed is less of a concern to me than data cap. I have 4 kids and we're all always streaming/gaming. The cable options in central Oregon are capped around 500GB/mo and some DSL are capped at 200GB. I went with a new comer that provides a 20mb connection with unlimited bandwidth and have zero issues. Sure, would be nice to get more speed, but when my cap is broken each month I just want to go postal. Data caps are total bs.

Someday I hope to have an option comparable to google fiber, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon.

Ya I was bumped from 10Mbs to 100Mbs a few months ago. I have no need for faster right now. I can stream 4k if I needed without a hitch. Unless you are sharing bandwidth with many people I dont know why you would need more then 50Mbs.

I pay $78 a month. I used to be a tech with Cox and TWC. I was really unimpressed with how TWC does business.

Downloading 55gb games like TW3 from steam.  It helps, its just not neccesary

Ah, okay.  Always cool to find another commo guy.  I'm an applications engineer with Channell Commercial.

I now have Google Fiber with great speeds and no data caps.  Prior to that I had TWC which was basically the same price for a fraction of the speed and reliability.

I am on 10 mbs line and i doubt i will get anything faster since i live on the edge of my city and getting fiber here is still a distant dream. But its good enough for me. I wouldnt even know what to do with 100 mbs + bandwith.
