Supply and demand, to the West gaming is still, just playing silly old computer games. In Korea gaming is like what the Olympics are to your average American. Gaming to some Koreans is really who they are as an individual, its a little bit scary but true.
Everyone saying that Asian games are just copies of previous games with a different skin forgets that we got dozens of WoW clones, that everyone and his mom is doing a MOBA right now, and that when not talking about game XYZ (where every other game is suddenly the best thing that happend to mankind since sliced bread) every game is boring, and dead before release.
So they tend to have a more sexualized style, with extremely young looking girls etc. And? In the west, guys have shoulder paddings that allow you to survive a crash with a truck, and have abs that would allow them to break steel beams with.
There's also a lot of difference (visually) between a game like Arpiel Online, Aeria Chronicles or Tree of Savior and Black Desert or Monster Hunter, just like Wildstar and WoW are not the same as The Division or Destiny. Heck, Wildstar could be classified as eastern MMO, given that it was released BY NCSoft, by a studio owned by NCSoft for most of it's existence. And FF XIV is rather popular, despite being "full" Asian.
And funny how nobody here mentioned the latest "fully "western game, ESO, as example how games should be. Maybe because it isn't "how games should be", either?
Where exactly are western games (oh, and with games like Gloria Victis developed in Poland..do they even count as "western" game?) superior then?

that last comment the reporter made amazes me that the government should step in and offer help to those addicted, if people want to spend 8 hrs a day on a phone playing games/browsing the internet let them, there are worst addictions out there, and addiction to smartphones has little or no impact on other people, after all someone is unlikley to rob someone for access to there smart phone, although family/friends releationships would likley break down.

So the next king after WOW is an MMOFPS tittle ? As you said , i feel strange that there are too few MMOFPS . If they don't make WOW clone and make MMOFPS instead , then there are no place for WOW .
Its not just limited to MMOs but games in general. The east makes games on pretty much every anime past/present/future that never see the light of day in west /rage! But also keep in mind that a lot of online activity in the east is connected to their identity numbers (social society etc) so they are pretty much monitored animals.
Lets not discount the fact that most Korean MMO's have absolutely no PVE content other than maybe a few dungeons. There are exceptions of course but the heavy focus on PVP has a lot to do with the quick turnaround.
I'm not sure that I prefer the hyper-masculinized/hyper-feminized tastes of the western market, so much over that of the cutesy culture of the east. They both kind of suck equally in my book.
And I'm also not so sure that "no grinding" is really a good thing. Particularly if that term is meant to be synonymous with not having long term character progression in mmorpgs.
My guess is they take mmo's more seriously than we do. We are all about working factory/production jobs 100 hours a week so we can continue to pay bills. This gives us little time for games.

Strange statement indeed. Gaming is as big as it has ever been.

The NA gaming industry is one where publishers don't want to take any risk and ask for short term ROI these days. Neither of these things fit the MMO market. Making a MMO cost a lot of money and the ROI is generally 2 years after release and not short term (cue to early access and founder's packages being created...). MMOs are also a lot more risky to develop than the next COD/Battlefield/Sport Franchise game clones.
It has nothing to do with how much people are spending, it's the fact they can deliver products that people are willing to spend for, while the rest cannot do the same. I recall not too long ago Star Craft 1 was also very popular esport out there in this glory days.

It is so bad, many kids need spinal surgeries to correct slipped discs, from looking down at the device too much
But doesn't MOBA, CCGs, and shooters are doing very well too in the West.
