The MMORPG industry in general isn't doing too well currently. Other markets are more attractive and I don't think Blizzard will waste any time or resources without analysis. A development of a new MMO may not start in the coming 2-5 years. Add to that 5 years of development if not more. And we will not see a Blizzard MMORPG in quite a long time if ever.

If they 'were' to make a new one, surely they would re-continue working on Project Titan.

If Overwatch is profitable/popular and the animated series and comics do really well... its very likely to serve as a base leading into the mmo like warcraft did for wow. Maybe not a full mmorpg, but something more akin to Destiny but on PC too (Project Titan was likely action combat/FPS like anyways, doubt it was tab-target).
If Overwatch is a success, why do you think they will want to turn it into a MMO? May be they will just do more online shooters?

Or may be they will be creative and do something they have not done before, like a puzzle, or a stealth game.

Maybe, but just a guess since Overwatch is rumoured to have been pulled from the Project Titan mmo they had in development.

This topic was asking what blizzard's next mmorpg would be.. and to that i think they would finish the one they got half baking than look to create a new recipe. Not like there has been any big huge hit recently for them to change direction and copy and reason for them to totally scrap what Titan was.

The thing people are saying about the MMORPG industry not doing too well is for the most part correct, but think about what Blizzard could possibly do if they did make a new MMORPG. They could re-vitalize the industry yet again and start a new standard.

I'm no Blizzard or WoW die-hard, but they are in a good position right now that they could eventually innovate yet again and set another new standard. They certainly have the money and loyal fan base to do it.

I said other... it is clear that at least Star Craft and WoW are connected so why not some time portal action an mmo that combines all of Blizzard's properties like: Blizzard Universe Online. An MMORPG version of Heroes of the Storm I guess.

TBH I don't think they will make another MMORPG. It's not profitable when compared to their recent games.
I don't think they will make another mmorpg either.

They were working on one and decided to scrap it after years of work. They didn't decide to continue, they decided to scrap it.

    That's pretty telling.

Its pretty much accepted that Overwatch was created from the resources that were used in Project Titan, if Blizzard felt it wasn't MMO capable then i seriously doubt anyone else could make it work, so as good a game as Overwatch is, Overwatch the MMO, not going to happen. If Blizzard do get around to making another MMO, i think it will probably be based on their original IP, Warcraft, but probably not until WoW is getting to the stage where it needs to be shut down.

Because it is not about how to find a setting of a MMO .. that is trivial. It is about whether blizz think that their resources can be better used making some other types of games.

I used to wish for a "World Of StarCraft"

    ..........used to.

I would guess World of Starcraft, but I think they are a ways off from starting the development of any new MMO.  Blizzard won't start on a new MMO until WoW really starts to tank (which appears a few years away since it's still multiple times larger in terms of paid subscribers than anything out there).

How Blizzard handled Titan shows us how little interest there is spending the $100 million or whatever necessary for the next big MMO (that would, at this point, cannibalize off WoW).

hmm .. D3 sold 30M copies .. pretty big hit. Hearthstone is very successful. The new starcraft is selling well.

The assumption that blizz will make another mmorpg is flawed. If anyone, they are the one who can make a new type of game and be successful.

I dunno that, they did cancel Starcraft: Ghost and still made both Starcraft games and FPS games since.

Titan probably just weren't good enough. That not said that they will make a new MMO but Wow 2 wouldn't surprise me, they love sequels....

If they ever did... probably it would be WoW2. I don't see them working on another MMo ever, and if they did it would be based off their only MMo. Considering titan turned into overwatch, they likely would only play a safe bet instead.

I suspect the chances of an actual MMO though are very low given how much better a cash grab other games are with far less effort.
I think overwatch is going to be a  flop. Too many games in the genre already.

I don't think Blizzard will make another MMO anytime soon. If they do, I don't think the IP will come first, I think the mechanics will come first and then they'll match the mechanics with an IP.

I also don't think Blizzard will "innovate" as such. They'll do what they've done with all their games: take an existing genre and design style (e.g. themepark mmos) and make it more accessible and desirable to the masses. That is where their strength lies: not in being innovative or creative, but in taking existing ideas and making them accessible to the masses.

So, if the MMO market moves towards sandbox again, I think we'll see WOW2.

If the MMO market moves towards twitch style combat, I think we'll see Starcraft Online in a similar format to Planetside or perhaps more like Destiny.

If the MMO market moves more towards voxels and building / destruction, we'll probably see either Heathstone or an entirely new IP.

If the MMO market sticks with the current themepark style, I doubt we'll see another MMO from Blizzard as they wouldn't be able to replicate WoWs success, so even if the new MMO was successful, it would still damage their reputation.

I voted other because I don't see them making another MMO, they already canned one that was several years into development.

Here's the problem Blizz is facing. Everyone is looking to make the next WoW, the WoW Killer, expectations run riot and we've seen the results of that. If anyone is going to top WoW you'd expect it to be Blizzard.

But, the truth is, and Blizzard are totally aware of this, nothing will top WoW's success. They know it was a fluke, never to be repeated. I'm sure that if Blizzard thought they could turn out an MMO that would be as successful as WoW, they'd do it, but they know that's not going to happen and any MMO that they produce that doesn't reach that level of success will be seen as a failure. Seriously, why do you think they binned Titan?

    Not gonna happen.

I also think that it is off to assume that blizz cares enough about mmorpgs to even go through that thinking (may be when they started titan, but not anymore).

I think it is more likely that they will just brain storm what they want to make, based on both gameplay ideas, fun factor, and the market, and mmorpgs just don't come up anymore.

I think it will be WoW2 but designed to hit a different group of gamers. Sandbox, or some PvP game where there is no trinity. Something that would not take the core gamers from WoW1. Just my two cents.
  • MendelMendel Member LegendaryPosts: 5,609
It has been historically very difficult to predict what Blizzard is going to do, other than remain profitable.  They may or may not choose to pursue a new MMORPG product in the near future, but if they choose that route, I'd expect Blizzard to address the following considerations.
    • WoW has provided a base-line earnings.  It has almost had, at times, a stranglehold on the fantasy gaming genre.  If there is a sense that WoW's revenues are falling, they would look to another genre for a flagship product.  Therefore, I wouldn't expect a WoW 2 or World of Diablo.  World of Starcraft seems most likely (SF vs F) of their current products to receive the MMORPG treatment.
    • Blizzard might choose to pursue a new, different IP.  Historically, their corporate strength has been developing intriguing IPs that aren't subject to external parties (rights).  They might choose to develop their own property, be it in any genre -- historical, SF, superhero, horror.
    • Any new project might be designed around a specific play style.  Most of their other products are heavily based on PvP,  WoW wasn't.  As a result, the biggest complaint against WoW was that the PvP felt tacked on.  I would expect that will not happen again.
The one possibility I would like to see Blizzard develop is a time-traveling SF variant game, where the PvE focused on near-future alien incursions, with scheduled PvP historical encounters helping drive the overall game experience (weapon technology, biological sciences, expansions, etc.).  So, players might fight 3 groups vs 3 groups in Iwo Jima, or have a 2 groups vs 1 group at Agincourt.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

i doubt blizz cares about niche markets. Look at what they go after later .. MOBA, shooter, CCG.

  • XiaokiXiaoki Member EpicPosts: 4,036
If they ever do return to MMOs it would likely be WoW2. Blizzard had said several times that they would like to make WoW more of an action MMO but can't because of the player base.

But that probably wouldn't be for awhile.

Games like HotS, HS and Overwatch are far more profitable.

They have lower production costs, shorter development times, smaller development teams, and lower ongoing production costs.

Just overall more money made for less money spent for less time by less people. Who wouldn't want that?

HotS ongoing development has been 1 new hero a month, 1 new map every couple months, new hero skins and mounts and balancing whenever.

For the amount of time, money and people it would take to make a new MMO they could instead make 3 Overwatchs.
