Lack of appreciation and gratitude in this thread is astounding.
We are talking about video games - a privilege that many can't even imagine and here you are complaning about lack in a sea of abundance.
Maybe some here don't deserve to play any games period.
No soup for yall
Well we are consumers after all, think of your super market, if it suddenly most of the food you boght got changed into beans and carrots, except you don't like beans and carrots so you are abit lost, the pizza that you so love the only ones available are well out of date or frozen rubbish.
As a consumer I am not happy with the market, I only continue playing because 'i have to buy food' or in reality I am an mmo gamer.
If it continues for another few years though I will end up quiting, only so much crap I can handle afterall. Maybe I'll get an outdoor hobby instead lmao!
But yeah.. MMOs are bad atm and I don't need to feel appreciative for what they are right now, people should strive to do better and whats on offer right now is pretty crap.
I can respect things like GW2 and EVE but I am looking for something else, a fantasy type that leans heavy on pvp but not JUST pvp.
I played conquer online 10 years ago it was right in so many ways. (bad in many too though hah)
That's your opinion and I disagree with you.
The current mmos are just as amazing as back when I played UO and EQ1 in 1998/1999.
Honestly I'm happy that at least some of us are getting enjoyment. I'd like to know what game you're currently playing and why it's so great for you, or what you see is so great about what's out right now.
I can answer some of that for Kano....
Whatever the hell you want to play that makes you happy.

There are a TON of MMOs out that are as good or better than anything released in the past. You just may be....may...be....tired of the genre
I'll speak for just me here, but it's very hard to just have to deal with the fact that no one is making anything for me anymore. It's been like this for me in movies for years, minus Star Wars and the Marvel/DC movie franchise, none of those fekkers in Hollywood know/give a damn about me as a potential customer. MMORPG's is the thing I wanted to fight for, since it's been a part of me for so long. So I guess this is just one more thing that I have to let go of.

Seriously, I was just scrolling down the list of highly rated and released MMO's and none of them sounded appealing. Like literally every single one of them was just giving me a sour feeling and making my head spin.
One of the top rated "MMO's" on this site right now is SMITE. SMITE is a moba!! Its not even an MMO!
ESO is repetitive, FF14 is nothing but grind, Secret World is all mystery no substance, Guild Wars 2 is just Meh.
Literally nothing, you know what I want?

SWG

if that is the case, then the mmo genre as it is now, is no longer for you or those trying to cling to the past. I personally have moved on to games like POE and marvel heroes(big arpg fan). with console games here and there but arpg is my bread and butter genre. Time to look for other genres to play. there are nice srpgs and jrpgs out there as well(sword coast, pillar, civ games, and the such)
?????!!!! Don't like ARPGs never did. Don't like console games or the arcade games that preceded them, never did. Don't even own a console, never have. Don't like JRPGs never did. Don't lke TRPGs, never did, and calling them SRPGs does not change that.
Liked MMORPGs like EQ, WoW and EQ2. Rift was OK for a while. Liked some of the others out there too. Not at all sure why I should change my tastes to conform to some other persons.
Well if you wish to continue in this genre, and there are no games you like then your only options are too either change your tastes, leave or be miserable and bitch . What do you think is going to have the biggest impact on your health week being and personal satisfaction?
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

I couldn't take you seriously after you called FFXIV a grind, then listed COH, SWG, and EQ as the games you want to play. All three of those games are all grind, but I'll answer your question anyway.
Want that experience again? Make it for yourself. You choose to play MMOs the way everyone else does, but nobody says you have to. Want an adventure? Pick any MMO with a large world, point yourself in a direction and go explore. Ignore the exclamation points, don't search online for guides, just go and discover for yourself. I know people who do that, and they love it. They aren't competing with anyone, they aren't taking part in the gear grind. There are plenty of games that could give you the gameplay you are looking for, but that isn't what you want. You're chasing that first experience again, you're chasing nostalgia, and you'll never find it again. You either need to find new experiences to enjoy, or realize MMORPGs are just not for you. You had that honeymoon experience where everything was new and exciting, but your heart is just not in the genre and nothing will bring that back.

I choose "be miserable and bitch". Why? Change my tastes and be even more unhappy nope. Leave? I already do other things but when I want to play video games what I play is EQ2, not as good as it was but heck better than anything else.
I have to agree with the last poster. It's not the game as much as how you play it. In ESO and GW2 I took off and explored high level areas as soon as I got use to my characters. I died a lot in GW2 doing that in order to take my low level Ranger pet collecting. Not intended as how the game should be played buy I enjoyed doing it and the xp from exploring wasn't bad either. In ESO I took my level 12 into a level 35 zone and did the vampire quest, now that was challenging and fun and no grind, just adventuring. No matter what game you play it will always have stuff you like about and stuff you don't.
Perhaps one day the winds will change and you'll have the time of your life playing MMO's that fit your playstyle, then there'll be a whole new group of posters complaining about there not being enough theme park MMO's with pointed arrows directing you to what should be done next. Bottom line, everyone can't be happy all the time. So go ahead and keep complaining, maybe some dev will read this and get inspired.

Just do like me, played pretty much everything, got dissapointed so often in the last 5 years that i got fed up.. I went for a game I've never played before ( Hard to imagine since i pretty much played all the mmorpg's on mmorpg.com list ) I installed Everquest, went and tried P99 server and Phinny new live server.. And i'm having more fun than playing those new mmorpg's.. Weird no? lol..

Yeah, be miserable and bitch is a good choice. Why? It's so darn much fun, and seems to get a rise out of others so why not. Beats any of the other alternatives, and fortunately for me, I've got one MMORPG left as a refuge.

Gestankfaust and DMKano are essentially just saying "shut up" without using those words. The unsatisfied are harshing their mellow, or waking up their daddy complex, or just giving them an excuse to tee off.
Trying to be the world's worst Life Coach by telling people to stop venting is useless. And yes, I am aware I just wrote a counter shut up.
MMORPG players are often like Hobbits: They don't like Adventures
II think a key problem is "rose tinted glasses syndrome" I suppose i could call myself an old school mmo starting out with UO and progressing onto Daoc and then everything on from there. We remember the good ole times like server wide events downing the dragon so to speak. Clearing that epic dungon with 50 other players. No team speak, the good old trinity healer tank dps. and forget the crap that went along with it.
Who remembers epic PVP in dark age of camelot where the call was "remove your cloaks it increases fps" , or spending a relic raid as a healer mashing group heal while staring at your feet and only the people with decent computers could be on dps roles to target and kill.
i recently went back to daoc and it still holds fond memories for me, but graphics are garbage compared to modern mmos and i know graphics shouldnt make a game but eye candy is important. A lot of the "old games" i loved and played have been through so many patch iterations they are not the game i originally played. Age of conan i enjoyed my necromancer loads then they gutted the class.
i dont know how to resolve the glut of crappy 3 month lifespan mmos, but thats how the market has evolved gone are the days of really investing in a game. and i think 99% of that is gated content blocks if they removed gated content so i could do what i wanted when i logged on instead of making the mmo like a second job i would be happier with a newer mmo.
I hope that's sarcasm. Never played an MMO that is so mind-numbingly boring before. Add 0 challenge and atrocious UI and I give this game 2 days before population plummets, it already has in every other region.
The solution? Don't play mmorpgs. That's what I Am doing. I don't want to play any of the current mmorpgs. I don't want to play any of the old mmos like EQ or swg either.
Only maybe swtor because of the Star Wars hype at the Moment. I need my Star Wars fix. I guess I just would go and see the new movie again

The genre hit it's peak already. People either love it or hate it, and that's where it's at currently. I don't see this genre evolving drastically anymore.
It tried evolving with action combat, as well as with other non-standard MMO staples, such as questing & leveling, non-trinity, raiding, etc. Some examples would be TSW, GW2, ESO, Tera, Archeage, WS, etc. It was rejected by most people though.
There is nothing new in this genre. Landmark could've drastically changed the genre if it was successful, because i believe user-generated content is the future for online virtual worlds. No developers or studios have capitalized successfully on this though.
Try to get into the Shard online beta, Lord British latest game. Should be "oldschool" enough for you, I think. I will wait until it is ready for release myself though.
Lord British has nothing to do with Shards, the guys making it are former UO devs but he isn't involved at all. Where did you get that from? He has his own game out atm, can't remember the name of it.
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
Right now Virtual World style games are not always MMORPGs. You could play one of the survival sims for what you are looking for. If it has to be an MMORPG, EVE fits your wants.
I noticed that one of your criticisms was of a game being repetitive. I had some thoughts about that.
A lot of MMO games are going to resemble ones you have already played. Combat, UI, and mechanics are generally shared across MMOs. Even when you play one of the "innovative" games that brings something different (action combat, events), those new things will eventually seem repetitive as well. We are trying to play games for hundreds of hours, and have already put thousands of hours across other games in the genre. It makes sense that at some point we just get played out. How many different ways can we avoid standing in fire, interrupt a cast, or line of site a mob?
Not to ramble on, but I have been wondering lately just how much of my boredom with current games is because I have played enough of them already.
Seriously, I was just scrolling down the list of highly rated and released MMO's and none of them sounded appealing. Like literally every single one of them was just giving me a sour feeling and making my head spin.

Just switch, your gonna have to give up on that kind of stuff, because no new game company is gonna risk the money to make something like that. There are plenty of games out there that do what you said, including SWG which is still there, and project 1999. Then there are survival games you can run your own server on, like starbound, Ark, ect. The pvp in SWG, and eq 1999 sucked bad any ways, so if you want pvp go to a MOBA, which is a lot better. Coop, small scale games have always been better for RPG anyways. Such as NWN 1, there was more RPG, in one persistent game session server, then all the role playing in EQ combined.
I recommend Starbound if you want to live in a virtual world, if you can get over the SNES graphics.
