imageAlpha Servers Going Offline as Devs Search for Solutions

The Repopulation alpha servers will be going offline sometime today as the team searches for solutions to recent issues with Hero Engine creators, Idea Fabrik. The server will remain offline until some type of resolution is found but the team remains confident that the game will ship in "as timely a fashion as possible".

I agree.  Combat was extremely clunky and I'mean hoping a new engine will give them an excuse to redesign it.

they already said a while back they could not move to a different engine as most of what they have done relies on the hero engines ways of doing things, sure change the engine but expect the game to start from scratch, like from scratch. Even the assets are bound in some way to that engine.

I'd say too bad, but based on what I saw after dumping about 20 hours into the game, square one is probably for the best. Good luck guys. Pick a better engine this time.

Moving to a different engine would be a such an overwhelming undertaking in both financial and development hours needed - it's completely out of the question for them.

This is one of the risks of MMO development - you hit a snag like this and it could be a major problem in terms of losing players and momentum.
Agreed, the Hero engine might not have been the best choice from the start but changing engine means more or less starting all over from the beginning and is a really bad idea.

As I see it only one MMO really would be worth the bother: World of Warcraft. In that case they do have the money and it would certainly be worth the work.

In this case they need to patch things up as well as they can with the Hero engine. That can certainly be done, TOR is running an early version with pretty good resault even if it had some issues with it as well. It is far too late for any other option besides scrapping the entire project.

I played for a short enough time on steam to qualify for a refund still. I thought the game had a great premise and the skills had good ideas, but the gameplay and artwork were absolute garbage imo and I filed a refund under steams refund possibly. I didn't think it was going to get to a usable status any time soon. Sadly, it looks a bit worse than that.

Its a shame they didn't learn from Bioware, no other company was prepared to use the Hero Engine and now the Repop might never happen because they relied on it, i hope they can overcome this hurdle.. but its a huge hurdle, i wish them luck.

Start selling ships and hire all the engineers who built the first one to rebuild the new one. Seems like the solution every other game is going with to do something 'impossible'.

They need an angel investor now. There is no other way they can keep this going with the amount of ongoing funds they are getting with their campaign, especially with this news breaking.

I really liked this game, although I didn't like the engine from the beginning. So if I'm ever to love this game, this is the change I always wanted although I am getting it in a twisted way if at all - I guess MMORPGs work in a mysterious way as well XD

Moral of the story, Dont start a massive project (mmos) on a shitty engine.

If only that had happened to EA back when Swtor was launching... They had the funds to start again from scratch on a better and bigger engine. Oh well..such is life.

Come on DMKano, you got to love when people just say change the engine.  As if it is like changing your shirt or something.

No surprise to me. I am surprised they lasted this long actually. I am just sad that no capable dev team seem to be able to bring back the MMO premise (SWG/UO anno 2015) that so many of us want.

To bad for them. Pretty sure the dev's themself will lose a lot more compare to gold/lifetimes packages.

The risk of buying something that is early access.

Yep, they made a huge mistake signing on to that contract. If really really want to use the engine, fine...but don't hang your entire freaking business on a single third party's ability to provide the servers, bandwidth, billing AND support. Talk about being subject to a single point of failure...

    Hero Engine strikes again!

A new engine, while hard and lots of work, is really their only option. They have their art assets still I am sure and were in beta working out the gameplay. So while hard and a lot of work, it is either that or abandon their project really.

Remember, if a game engine is regarded as one of the worst by gamers, prolly best not to use it.

It's more than "lots of work". HE uses its own scripting language. That means, to change engines, you would have to rewrite everything from scratch. They would be starting over entirely.

As for assets, they need to be "dumbed down" for HeroEngine because of its low capabilities so, while they could reuse them, I can't even imagine why you would want to.

HeroEngine is dead. It's been dead for years. They're just now pulling it off of life support.
