I do have one memorable RP'ing experience, but sadly my apparent Alzheimers cannot remember what game it was but it was funny and the total strangers i started it with had fun as well.
Basically the two were rp'ing and i happened by and proceeded to insult and challenge thy noble knight in front of his fair maiden :pleased:
What pursued after that was nothing but hilarious,we were never serious ,it was great fun and lasted about 30 minutes. However that does not happen hardly ever at all,we need content to bring a game to life otherwise it is a FAKE world a fake sky with 4 walls and a few textures pasted around. However it is the people and i have said it many times, that make the REAL story behind a game.
Another of my funniest stories.I'll make it quick.... 4 friends in rl,we are noobs,we see a ship yonder, let's go see !!!
Hey let's ride it ok great idea.Ship sets sail we are all sort of excited, cool cutscene this is awesome.OK so we are like ,let's go upstairs and see the view,,yeah great idea !!! WHOP WHOP .....dead.Next through the doors whop whop dead,,,next dead and lastly ...DEAD roflmao.
A big nasty Kraken was waiting up top to easily slice and dice us into dead little pieces we laughed so hard our stomachs hurt. Then to top it off all 4 of our bodies lay face down dead in the dirt once the ship landed this was again a hilarious sight to see, with jokes of looking for contact lenses etc etc.Good ending a pleasant female White Mage sees us and begins to raise us all from our doomed state.
However our fun times and fond memories may never exist if a game does not offer the tools and design to form a camaraderie with other players.Example in a pvp game there is likely way more bickering and angry insults than any rp'ing. If you just solo then you never even meet anyone else to RP.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Give us an example of your RP skills. The floor is yours...
It is a continuous engaged process .... The rp doesn't have to be this epic moment, it will likely be unique though. That's the problem with games, they lose their uniqueness real quick. We've been there and done that before.
So for some rp examples...
WoW - immerse yourself as a member of the Horde or Alliance, how would you react to your surroundings? start a war? gather support? If you're pveing ... do you understand the lore? do you know why you're doing what you're doing?
Archeage - someone just stole your crates, or robbed your friends/ally - immerse yourself into that situation, how would you react?
ESO - this one, I mean come on, this one has voice overs, this is so easy to jump in and rp, the npcs do any excellent job of breaking the ice so you can even rp by yourself
Now those games are newer, but I challenge you to do this wile enjoying a classic like EQ, DOAC, Runescape :-0 Runescape? The point is this used to happen without all the graphic , server, and social technology we have today.
If you know how to rp, any game can be the greatest game you have ever played. It's that simple.
Your assumption is that everyone would enjoy RP if they just knew how to do it. I don't believe that for an instant. I've spent too much time RPing on RP servers where the majority did not RP at all. They experienced it happing all around them but did not participate. I believe they understood the concept. They just did not want to participate. Most mmorpg gamers have no interest in RP.
That being said, my favorite mmorpg's were those in which a thriving RP community allowed me play in-character. Nothing is more immersive. But ... different strokes for different folks.

I know HOW to RP, as in REAL tabletop roleplay, but I choose not to in computer games because it's all just clichéd crap from people who have no idea what they're doing these days. The Elf-wallopers and Hobbit-humpers in mmorpgs are crass and embarrassing.
I believe they understood the concept. They just did not want to participate. Most mmorpg gamers have no interest in RP.
Absolutely. I have done tabletop d&d before. When i play a video games, i am NOT looking to RP. I am looking for good combat gameplay, which I cannot get in a tabletop d&d.
Plus, there is no point (for me) to RP with strangers.
The only game I really RP in nowadays is FFXIV -- and that's because Balmung is a haven for RP. It's always closed and the only way to get in is to get lucky in the middle of the night (likely spending hours or days for an opening) or paying $18 for a character transfer.
The vast majority of people RP and no matter the day, you always see people in the taverns or in Ul'dah. Emotes for days. The only game where there's so much RP that you don't need an RP guild. Even has it's own website and people who go to the lengths required to
join the server typically know it's an RP server beforehand, thus even
more RPers join.
Might occasionally RP on WoW with friends.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing). German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century. Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now). I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things). In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while. If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.
Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this. If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own. Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis. Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

You're kidding yourself if you think "the vast majority" RP on Balmung.
A MMO can't be more fun then the people you play it with but the extremely low general difficulty most modern MMOs have impacted the social interaction very negatively. It was far easier to get new friends in the old games and the easy cross server automatic grouping most games have for dungeons today doesn't help much either.
RPing with people will still make a MMO more fun and might get a average game up a step but it isn't the same thing as when people are forced to band together for mutual protection.
Still, I think MMOs are moving in the wrong direction. GW2 for example had things right at the first beta weekend but casual players where whining so they nerfed it. Those casual players do bring in plenty of money initially but they tend to leave the game after a few weeks and the average and hardcore players that want challenges get stuck in easy mode. And the same whining is happening now with HoT so it is just a matter of time before they nerf it down as well.
Harder content is good for the community and a few raids just ain't enough. RPing is also good for the community but it isn't enough. MMOs need to become better at making people working together, even if it just is a few soloers that jump in together to defeat a boss it still helps (and many small steps really don't hurt).
People feel that something has to be done to them to make them happy or have a good time. True good times come from within. Games are just a tool. How you use them is pretty much up to you. Nothing stops you from being creative but you.

It's been the RP server since 2010 -- and I've met far, far more RPers than anyone else. You can literally ask any stranger if they RP, and they will say "yes" most of the time. Nowadays, people only try to get on it because it's the main RP server, despite all the obstacles.
Though it may be a case of just seeing RP everywhere and making a baseless assumption. After all, people who don't likely don't speak.

Not really,i stopped to rp sometimes just out of boredom or i was in a really good mood so thought i would just goof off.
IMO the serious people are those that login same time everyday to raid the same dungeon everyday. They even consider themselves l33tists,same for those that play games to simply rank and i see a LOT of that now a days.
Then don't even try to be funny or talk to those people who are ranking up,they get all angry and moody and bark back insults or start calling everyone a troll or noob or whatever other insult they can manage up in between their spewing anger fits.
I have the perfect example to prove it is the exact opposite,go watch a RP streamer in Hearthstone, the women like to rp a lot, they are definitely 100% not serious and just having fun, then go watch a non rp streamer, quite often angry ,salty ,moody.

I have never played an MMORPG so that I, alone, could RP. I logged on to RP with other players. It is the context, not the mechanics.
