I prefer the Witcher simply because I was very engrossed with the books. I've played all three games and I actually give a shit about the characters, the world, and what happens to it. I haven't felt that way about a Fallout game since Tactics. FO3 didn't do it, New Vegas almost did. FO4 definitely didn't. I don't care for most of the companions except for Curie and Hancock, since they all seem based off of a bunch of overused tropes. The world building is only revolutionary if you've never touched any kind of PC sandbox game that features it (Rust, Ark Survival) and the settlement management feels more like babysitting since even if I furnish all of the settlers with Gatling lasers they still got wrecked if I didn't swoop in and save them. Despite the dozen or so laser turrest littering each of my zones. The story was an okay fish out of water apocalypse offering, but nothing special (to me). I didn't like the factions either. I couldn't sit well with any of them and ended up defaulting to the Minutemen. Choosing between the mad scientist separatists, tyrants in power armor, and shortsighted weirdos wasn't a great choice.
Anyways. This, all in all is a pointless debate. Neither is objectively better, it's all about opinion. Kind of like how every bitches about the witcher's combat system but I think it's silky smooth with weight to it, and doesn't feel floaty like Fallout's shooting. And to the people saying they "can't identify with Geralt", you're not supposed to identify with him completely. I'd be worried if you did since he is a (mostly) emotionless mutant. But unlike the FO4 protagonist, at least he has a reason for being that way. Hell, half the time he has more emotional depth. The scene where you come across your son again after all the shit you go through to reach him just felt phoned in to me.
Articles like this need to die. I didn't even care for FO4 that much after roughly 60 hours and even I thought this was biased. Here's hoping Cyberpunk 2077 is good, since that's my favorite genre and would be my personal GOTY.

I could never get into the Witcher series. A game that doesn't let you design your own character isn't a really a RPG in my opinion, it's missing the whole role playing part.
Role playing really just means that. You're playing a role. Whether or not that role is created by you is irrelevant.
I like both Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 for different reasons.
The problem with being able to 100% design your own character is that the story has to be written with that in mind. Things that NPC's can say about Geralt, which feel 100% authentic, such as mentioning his grey hair, how old he is, and how he really shouldn't be monster hunting anymore is absolutely impossible if you give the player the freedom to build their own character.
On the other hand, you have to play what you're given. If I don't want to be an old man with grey hair, then too bad, that's my role for the story.
With Fallout 4, I can make whatever I want, but the story has to be extremely generic to match my flexibility. Otherwise the game would be 20x as large on our hard drives with tens of thousands of extra lines of dialogue to cover every possibility.
Essentially, what I'm getting at, is that there is merit to both styles and I like both types of RPG. I found Witcher 3 to be the most engaging story that I've ever had the chance to play in an RPG for almost 20 years.

W3 is a ok for a one time play through, re play value is non existent.
Speak for yourself , and ONLY yourself , not for the rest of us .
I am still planning to replay Witcher 3 for the 4th time , going to go with the heavy armor route this time and focus on being tankish , trying to catch up with what i missed and trying to make new decision with different quests , finishing quests in different orders , and different endings .
If you are trying to make a point , you pretty much just failed , miserably at that . Play the game first next time .
P/S: And don't tell us you played it , if you did you wouldn't make say W3 lacks world Exploration ( REALLY ? ) crafting ( w00t ?) , " customization builds" (!!) compare to fo4 . In fact the char build in fo4 is absolutely boring , because once again the sneak-melee /range had become so ridiculously overpower to the point every other 'builds" become obsolete.
That's akin to saying that deepfried food is healthier then candy, neither fallout 4 or Witcher 3 are good rpgs, they are good FPS/rpg-lite, Action adventure/rpg-lite games. Fallout 4 atleast has character creation and you can change how your character plays infinitely more then Witcher 3 where you can't change how geralt plays at all (he will always be a light spell caster that uses two swords)
I tend to agree somewhat with the statement about comparing apples to oranges and other fruit. Each genre of RPG brings something to the table. While I am not a big fan of the sci-fi or zombie stories I absolutely love the fantasy of Witcher3 and Dragon Age. In Dragon Age Inquisition there is that enjoyable and believable interaction between the characters. Witcher3 is my hands down favorite game for this year and maybe for all time. The graphics are phenomenal, the story is great and the treasure hunting is the "bomb"! I love looting and creating my potions and enhancements. Finding the gear and building better armor is so much fun. The combat is exactly what I would imagine a sword fight to be. While another person described it as battling on roller skates I thought of it as a ballet of carefully choreographed moves. I live in hope that the Dev's will bring Geralt out of retirement and make a Witcher4 or at the very least new chapters to his story. As to the discussion about replay value in Witcher3 I disagree when others say there is none, subtle tweaks to a person's choices do impact the story and can produce alternate endings. I am speaking from experience having run through the game three times now, LOL!
The highest-grossing movies have always been able to appeal to children. That being said I wouldn't exactly call the Star Wars movies children's movies.
"Yeah, sorry, but I pretty much guessed the main plotline the second I talked to the robot outside of the vault. I was very disappointing when no plot twists, or anything new at all happened. "
That's pretty impressive if you figured out what happened to your son just after leaving the vault (i.e. totally impossible). Did you make it to the institute?
I disagree that nothing new happened. Tons of new things happened in that game, and you can often decide how they happen, which is what makes good RPG.
The main thing I was impressed with was the companions. All of them had unique dialogue for tons of different situations and they all came with their own quest. There were like 10 of them available.
It wasn't that hard to figure out. After a few dialogue lines with the robot I was like 'oh, let me guess, this is the future, my son is going to be an old man' And once the story focused on the institute, well, let's just say it didn't take that much imagination to guess how it would turn out.
The aftergame was probably not very well done. Once I'm the leader of the institute, the institute has their robots running around attacking everyone, which was annoying.
Yes, I agree that most of the companion quests were quite interesting and were the best part of the game.

It is for those of us who are just in it for the story, playing a second time through and picking all different choices really changes the game. Yes though, I agree, the game doesn't lend itself to those interested in customization/builds, gear and crafting. Exploration in the Witcher 3 is great though, not sure what you mean by that. When I saw the first city I was blown away by the size of it, and then I found out it was the smallest city in the game (of the two big cities). I really enjoyed exploring in the Witcher 3!

*Possible spoilers*
What I liked about the endgame was there was at least 3 paths to take. Either continuing on as leader of the institute, freeing the synths or blowing all of it up with the Brotherhood (there might be a 4th path if you work with the minutemen).
If you took the institute path, I'm not exactly surprised they sent the synths after everyone.
I went with freeing the synths and I enjoyed the story. And the fact that it continues on after the "end" was really cool. I stopped playing it but I'm still curious how far it goes (both for my path and for all the paths).

Or a non-spellcaster as one doesn't need to use the spell casting. A subtle point but one doesn't have to use the magic system such as it is.

The Witcher 3 was a great game, however I did not enjoy it as much as I did with Fallout 4. I think the combat in the Witcher 3 was just to boring for me, I had more fun combat wise when playing the girl.
I loved Fallout 4, best fallout yet. However, I never thought the Fallout games lived up to Elder Scrolls. This Fallout was also not an pure RPG, but a shooter/brawler with RPG elements. UNLIKE Fallout 3 and other Fallouts before it that I would classify as RPG with shooter elements. Bullets actually missed the targets in those games if your weapon skill with the particular firearm you were using was too low.
I have prefered all Fallout games to Witcher games in the past, but haven't played much of W3. W3 would still be the best RPG though, because fallout 4 isn't an RPG anymore. Still they are both so vastly different that you can't compare them like Apples to Apples. Fallout's writing wasn't great but the concepts and the plot were still pretty awesome. Don't know how it compares to Witcher's writing.
Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile
In an rpg, you are role playing. The idea is to feel like it is your story. Witcher 3 isn't a story about the character, it's a story about Geralt. It's a good story. But as an rpg, there's tons more to Fallout 4, and you are the character.
I can't believe there is even a discussion over this.
The Witcher 3 is a masterpiece, one of the best game ever, and pretty damn close to being the best RPG ever created. It's for sure the best RPG for at least the past 10 years, and I don't see any RPG beating it anytime soon.
While Fallout 4 is not even in the top 3 in 2015, let alone close to The Witcher's quality. Hell, It's not even the best Fallout game. But if we're talking strictly about RPGs, then Fallout 4 shouldn't even be mentioned at all, as it's a terrible RPG game.

I have to agree although I never played F4(I did mess around some in F3) The Witcher 3 was suggested by a friend and I discovered probably one of the best RPG's I have ever played. The story is so well done, I never feel like skipping the cutscenes at all and actually feel something for characters I meet and interact with. Add in a robust modding community and it's got me excited for the next game from CD Projekt Red.

Was a great year for RPGs as a genre.

But then again, it is a children's movie.
Is it? I would have said it's a movie for those who are young at heart. So much cynicism among the mmorpg.com peeps!
