They put a crap tone of character customization in the game then gender locked it, the most stupid decision they could make, give the player choice.

Gender locking in a Role Playing Game is counter intuitive to me as an old Pen and paper Dungeon Master. It limits character choice and the depth of character background you want to create for your character. Granted most people in MMO's don't go into this kind of depth but I do. I play certain types of Characters as Females usually because that's the backstory I have created in Multiple adventure worlds.

As a male this challenges me more to get into character. Sometimes playing a healer as a male is even more challenging for me because in D&D I always played those as females. Or a Rogue as a Female. The most Challenging character I Ever played was a Female rogue in Vanilla Wow. I wrote 120 pages of backstory on her. She was my last toon to get to 60 but once she did I LOVED playing her.

So Gender locks limit the Role playing aspect of a game for me.

they have already started making a opposite gender for each class, i thought MMORPG would do more research but i guess not, they have release a few so far that i dont remember but male and female ninja, female blader/samurai and more to come..., you let me down did not even research the game :(

They're making similar classes of opposing sexes. It's not the same thing. Regardless, the article states it's a non-issue. Wish folks would read more than the intro. :P

What?  And actually read what is being said?  Everyone knows the tagline is always the gist of the article!

I believe gender locking a class is beyond ridiculous. It just seems 80% lazy and 20% like they are aiming the class for people who want to have a "sexy" class. I am looking at you TERA.

I believe we have progressed past the need for gender locking anything, the need for forced stylized appearances (huge muscles, big boobs, tiny waists), and the need for forced skimpy armor. It should be 100% player choice. Gameplay trumps Lore, always.

i did read more than the intro, it is an issue for me for gender locking i dont like it , i dont like playing a female character, but the fact that you put it under BDO ur basically saying BDO does but when actually its not true gender lock, when they are making the opposite gender the classes are the same its just that they have different animations and they have soo few differences that they are the same class,  cant expect 2 different gender to be able to do the samething :P i mean women have more flexible body than man and so on :P

I don't really care about classes being gender locked, and despite the lengthy discussions about it, I think people who have strong issues with it are basically just overly focused on gender.

Its the vision of the game's creators...  There are all these posts saying no censorship and then this commenting that the devs need to conform to your vision of a game (AKA no genderlock).  Just play the game if you like it and that includes gender lock or cash shop stuff and if you don't just skip it.  No one is forcing you.

I think it is more that we want to play.. what we want to play. It seems silly to force a particular graphical style on someone.

I like to create characters with the likeness of those I respect or grew up looking up to.  I tend to make male characters.

I don't stare at my toons hind quarters though. I don't knock other people who play female characters though.

Then again I've seen some butt fugly character models so you may as well role a dude. Look at TSW for example. Those are some Fugly char models.
QFT. I remember how the character models looked BEFORE they "fixed" them too. My word, It looked like Napoleon Dynamite drew them. Horrid!

Any game you choose to play "forces" a graphical style on you regardless of gender locks. People demanding that every class has to be both male and female or its a "game-breaker", or a "strike against" the game is just weird imo.

You have these amazing mmos or rpgs with intricate game systems, immersive environments, beautiful art, and some dudes on the forum seem to write all that off and present gender locking as some kind of grand problem. It just seems ... petty.

It's all about money and time.

The problem is do you want a class to be available to ever class or do you want a limited selection and faster updates / more content?

You can't have everything unless you're wow.

I'm thinking by "everyone here at MMORPG.com" he meant staff wise, not every Tom, Dick and Suzy that frequents the site. Can't see the need of some taking it personally.

Myself, I disagree with gender lock, yeah I hear it is cheaper, but I feel also lazier. I feel we are at the point, technology wise, that animations and modelling are far more streamlined and since it has been stated that Black Desert is working on expanding the genders of it's classes, they know as well.

And for the record, I play mainly female characters, and not for some sexual reasoning, they just look and move better. I've seen, and played, very few male characters that I thought was cool enough to bother with. Half the time, in eastern mmo's in particualr, male models are one extreme or another, it is either some ridiculously over muscled behemoth or something so thin and girly looking you may as well be playing female.

Pretty much Asian based games have always been about the character and the role it plays within the game. So Once they started to create mmos the asian market brought that aspect into them.

Now a lot see that as gender locking.... this could be true or not I do not work for those companies but I will say that the gender locks if you actually read the lore behind what your playing makes sense lore wise. It would be odd if your playing Gandalf the male wizard and wanted to make him female just sorta would not work for the lore.....and for the females if you played Catti-brie the female dwarf from Forgetten Realms. But most do not play the games it seems for lore anymore or story just for leader boards(partly what has killed the mmo genre imo)

In general I would agree that I do not like the idea of a gender locked class. For BDO this seems to be a moot argument though. If you want to be a Female Wizard then you play the Witch which is the same class just female. They have done this with every class so I don't see a problem w/ it.

For the other titles such as Devillian and the like. I really do not enjoy it.

Was completely sold on Black Desert way back when I saw the first video of the Sorceress and couldn't wait to see what the Male version of it was going to look like because I just knew it was the class for me. Well wasn't long until I found out there were no Male Sorcerers but kept hoping and hoping and hoping... Nope apparently not happening. That is too bad because for me to enjoy a Fantasy game, I have to be able to imagine myself as the character. I am a guy, not a girl and have zero desire to be a girl and I am not at all interested in being a goofy giant, old geezer or boring vanilla warrior. Guess I won't be playing BDO.

To be fair it's not exactly a male and female warrior or male and female archer but each is a different type of warrior or archer etc.
and valkyrie and warrior are 2 completely different class if that what you are talking about for the warrior, valyrie is like a paladin and warrior is jsut ur generic warrior  and there is no opposite gender of archer yet
Yeah that was what I was talking about. I had seen a different name for the male archer (possible greyed out picture during the closed beta), not sure where I saw it, but assumed that it was different as the warrior/valkerie were different but I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

I have played the beta and purchased a founders $99 pack. I must say the game is amazing; however, the gender locking is the ONLY part of the game I HATE. In this day and age we do not need that in any game. The reason is their lore, well that poor game design in my opinion.

Having classes locked by gender or race is not wanted in the vast majority of cases, on this I agree.

But players refusing to play a game completely or a class they want just because of that? LOL!
  • evgen88evgen88 Member UncommonPosts: 120
For lore reasons saying a class or two is limited to one gender in a fantasy game is ok, so is saying a race or 2 doesn't have 2 genders/has no gender/has indistinguishable genders is fine. But I think that if a company can't afford to make the both gender animations for a lot of their classes they probably can't afford to make an over all good game.

I'm disappointed you are getting mad at someone for not checking all the details when you obviously haven't read the article. They are saying it isn't a bad thing.

i dislike gender-lock (except where lore absolutely demands it), but mainly because to me it speaks of corner-cutting by the devs (only 1 gender knights means you need fewer "knight" art assets).

it's not a deal breaker to me but its a solid -1 at the game; where else are these folks cutting corners?

also i like sandboxier games and locked gender speaks to the gameplay being more on rails.

personally i usually make a male main and female alt. exception was swtor, my main was a female twi'lek.
