I simply wont play a game that preys on peoples weaknesses. Asking for outrageous amounts of money for cash shop items who's only function is cosmetic. Ive seen games asking for 25 to 30 dollars for new outfits for avatars. 30 to 50 dollars for mounts that do nothing but increase your travel speed. I pay 60 dollars for a triple A title like GTA 5 wich offers 18 Gb of content. Why in the hell should i pay 30 dollars for a dress that is no more than 5 Mb.
So, how to prevent this from happening any longer?
Think of it similar to selling poisoned food in markets with no consequences.
How to prevent it? Players need to grow up and start taking responsibility for how they spend their money. If a game indicates that it can change things "whenever" and a player has noted that he/she normally doesn't like "changes" the stop playing those games. If game implements a cash shop don't play that game.
It is hardly equal to selling poised food in markets with no consequences.
Most games nowadays have Cash-Shop, or what if players bought the game, that was healthy, and later on it turned p2w, unplayable by their standards? What responsibility and action did they have than, when it wasnt their choice at all in the slightest.
Still, that counts like investing in something very possibly bad, like gambling, call it by its name, we are playing a game within a game, gambling our money praying something doesnt turn on us.
Since when did we have to be so aware if games will try to extort more money from us than we already gave. They are games ffs, cant they just give us the product they promise and take the money they priced it for.
If you don't like how a game works or plays DONT play it, crying it's wrong and pouting how it's not fair to you is pathetic.
Games and their model are changed after the fact. Games ask money upfront, they make promises, and then add game breaking items in the cash shop. Bait and switch is illegal.
Not to mention these gaming companies are skirting with gambling laws, and one of these days someone is going to point out what everyone already knows...that combining gambling and minors....is illegal.
The only one "pathetic" here is you for telling others to shut up. People have a right to voice their displeasure. This MMO industry is going down the drain at this rate. People are fed up with these cash shop scams.
I'm not telling anyone to shut up I'm telling those like you who are crying about how a video game isn't fair and have this pathetic entitlement mentality to grow up and take responsibility for their own decisions. Oh course people like you want to blame everyone else and feel that everything in life should be handed to you and made how you want it to be. If it's not you cry, protest, threaten frivolous lawsuits and send Obama petitions . It's sad, it's pathetic, and it's a cancer in society and a cancer in video games.
The mmo genre is going down the drain? Care to post some facts on that? Because clearly the facts are showing there are more mmos on the market then ever before and more people playing then ever before. Now sure people like you want to be part other "cool kids" and parrot the doom and gloom losers without any facts. Well keep crying buddy keep filing those petition, keep threatening those frivolous lawsuits keep it up buddy lol.
Or grow up and start taking responsibly for YOUR own decisions.
Hm, wouldnt call it Decision of a player, when he is forced to pay extra money for the content he already paid for on paper.Or when he is forced to quit the game he paid for becouse of gameplay problems induced by publisher.
Please give an example of what you are talking here...the paper comment anyways because the other comment about gameplay problems is just stretching to complain about something. Again this would be the entitlement mentally. Thinking the developer can't make changes without checking with you is ridiculous...
I think it would be good if games were forced to give better and more accurate price information so that gamers would have easier time making an educated decision on whether to start playing the game at all.
I've got a solution to that. If I can't figure out how a game is going to try to make money, I don't play that game.

You are asking me how a clock works, i cant tell you that, i can only tell you what time it is.
If you are genuinely concerned or interested, asking for proof ,you should only take a pick from the titles players complain about much ,and go to that game's direct forum, that is if you want to read about hundredfold more complaining than here.
As frequent mmo player, i have seen my fair share of raging players on various social networks, game forums, and sometimes half the chat inside a game would be about it, so it is kinda punishing for me to continue to see players complaining.
The idea is to make the product/game clear on start, if it will have paid add-ons, will it have gear related items in cash shop, and other ,prior to them releasing the game, so that players see what they give money for, and that they take all the risk only than. Simple and fair enough?
I simply wont play a game that preys on peoples weaknesses. Asking for outrageous amounts of money for cash shop items who's only function is cosmetic. Lately I've been playing Elsword, which offers a bunch of costumes for about $16 or so for a full costume. The costumes are character-specific, not account wide. And they disappear after 30 days. Rip off?
Well, there's an easy solution. It's called, don't buy costumes. Besides, if you get VIP ($12/month, account-wide), all characters on the account get a free costume for the (relatively minor) stats; you just don't get to pick which costume will be offered when.
Also, let's not be quick to praise games for being wasteful on storage space. If so inclined, a game could readily double its installation size just by using higher resolution textures. That wouldn't make the game twice as good.
Actually, let's back up a bit. Which do you think will lead to more high quality games being made?
1) Developers expecting that if they make a good game, they'll make a lot of money off of it, or 2) Developers expecting that if they make a good game, they'll get hit by a bunch of stupid lawsuits and protests and still lose money.
And then, if you want more games that you like to be made, act accordingly.

You shouldn't? Offering a really high price for an add-on that is inconsequential seems a more righteous option than to charge the same for something that prevents you from adequately enjoying the game after you've already "paid" for the content.
These games do need to make money somehow and show profit so other developers planning their own titles see that it's worth it to do so, continuing the cycle of titles to play. As much as we players put entertainment value on games, at its core a sentimental feeling, the gears that provide them are powered by money. We should not forget this lest we run out of quality games to play.

So you don't have a single example of for the first point? Not surprised...
Give me a break Internet forums like this and the official games forums have always been the vocal minority. All they do is complain all they do is pout about doom and gloom...sure every once and awhile there is a legit complaint thrown in but most is just the same doom and gloomers crying.
Sorry if you think a video game or any business CANT change due to market conditions, attempts to make money (these aren't welfare programs their businesses) or in their eyes improve the product you are sadly mistaken. Now if a product does change and you dont like those changes guess what? We are back to what I've said the entire time...
Stop blaming everyone and take some personal responsibility make a choice continue to use that product or don't...it's that simple.
Actually, let's back up a bit. Which do you think will lead to more high quality games being made?

Actually im not entirely sure Developers earn money after they sell publish rights to Publisher, and how they earn or how much if they even do. Only thought of those as 2 separate divisions. Clarification of this would be cool.
Id vote if there were payment models xD cant exactly choose

If you want to nitpick, replace "developers" by "publishers" and ask the same question.
I simply wont play a game that preys on peoples weaknesses. Asking for outrageous amounts of money for cash shop items who's only function is cosmetic. wtf i would never complain about things that are my choice, costumes cant make you sad, i mean can they?
its clear how much they cost, how they look like and you can preview them xD
I guess if your a girl hm than it matters much more.
The discussion is mostly about shady stuff that publishers pull, that can ruin your gameplay value or and experience, or trick you into conditions.
You were 100% right about this though:
"I've got a solution to that. If I can't figure out how a game is going
to try to make money, I don't play that game."
Though even than some companies tend to get more greedy and change prices and stuff later.
Recently there has been a wave of titles currently F2P implementing gameplay breaking items to the "Cash Shop"
Consumables that grant a player significantly more leverage gear-wise, are like a low kick in boxing, theyr just plain, wrong.
Granting players the opportunity to purchase the game once with all its merits, but charging add-on's that contain content or even worse gear-relevant value in them, is exploitation and extortion ,to say the least.
So, how to prevent this from happening any longer?
http://gamersbillofrights.org/ This is a start ,but hardly valid in the justice system, its a shady ground, that should get more definition and rules.
Think of it similar to selling poisoned food in markets with no consequences. Only here you dont go to the hospital, but after you feel as cheated, or stressed much, might very well go to psychiatrist..and give him the money greedy publishers demanded.
Extortion and Exploitation?
Please also look up what the big words mean before you decide to use them.
You got no leg to stand on. You are playing their game. They can do whatever they want with their game because... *drumroll* ...it's their fucking game.
If they decide to turn every player into a purple panda bear with a fedora farting raindbows then they can do exactly that and no one can do anything about it. Well, they can stop playing of cause.
This is also true for subscription games. You can probably get back subscription fees you paid in advance if you don't like a patch but part from that you have no say in anything.
How do you even come up with this ridiculous notion that you have any rights to demand anything from a FREE TO PLAY game.

What an ignorant childish piece of trash idea. If you don't like the way a certain game plays or is setup here is a tip...don't play it!
The entitlement mentality
Basically this argument boils down to:
"Shut up gamers, don't speak up about çompanies who nickel and dime players, don't speak about the cash shop practices that make casinos look like angels, just shut up"
No, it boils down to:
"Don't eat shit! If it looks like shit and it smells like shit then it is probably shit."
Here is something that will surprise you even more:
"If people stop buying shit then companies will stop making shit!"

well.... when i was younger if i wanted to play the best looking and most amazing games, i had to take a 5 hours bus ride, pay admittance to a amusement park and then... .. . Pay real money for each continue... Not saying that it was better, just giving a context to why i do not feel that paid DLC and cash shops are the ruination of all good and decent.
If you did not game during the arcade era.... You do not know what "micro-transaction" is. =P
Ant wat... I am glad someone decided to crusade for this, because the day we stop questioning society is the day we stop developing. But looking at said society at large... I´d give this idea a small snowball in hells chance. My suggestion is sticking to the passion-indie side of things where actually making money is second to making the game.

That happened in archeage, much of the money wasnt returned, and went down the drain. That is exactly the type of thing i am talking about. And it isnt an isolated incident as well.

You only have 1 right as a gamer, and it's the best one.
If you don't like what a game company is doing then stop giving them money.
Entirely true. Its a bit more complicated tho, many new players dont know the company, or the company is new, they buy "Package","Add-on", they get tricked into its one time payment, or they get banned randomly on game release even after they paid money to be head on xD
Players buying something which company after alters into something less without players knowledge, so that they can buy more of it. Speaking distant, but ppl can relate to it, plenty of examples in gaming.
Explain why NA Tera and Aion servers are still active, while EU Tera and Aion servers died slow and painfull death, while being under Gameforge.
This is just from the top of my head.
Well... A smaller install base and language barriers to begin with usually. Add the fact that a drop in population usually cause migrations and soon the costs to run these external servers get to high. That in combination with the logistic problems that usually follows having a secondary provider (i am an old SOE EU customer in case you wonder about my credentials) usually equals a EU servers being doomed even before it releases.
If you combine that with a game that fails to capture the right amount of players to begin with... Well not even Jesus Christ could have miracle wished that to succeed.
Ofc once the downward spiral starts, i agree many companies tend to "milk" the whales a bit more shamelessly. Especially if they are just a small service provider and not the actual developers or publishers.

Haha one game Archage? Haha the 1% spoken like a true entitled snob. Listen people got their money back from Archage and it wasn't a surprise the old school sandbox crowd pouted about something.
Still doesn't change the fact that entitled snobs need to learn. We don't need the government to control every aspect of our lives. You aren't entitled to get everything you want handed to you in life, at some point YOU need to grow up and make your own choices.
