John Smedley, the genius behind the Everquest franchise just released a game on kickstarter called Heroes Song. Its a 2d roguelike "hardcore" mmo with single player and private server options. If you dont believe how close this game mirrors the intent of Everquest, look at the classes. It has Everquest written right all over it. Classes include: Warrior, Beserker, Druid, Shaman, Bard, Paladin, Witch, Elementalist, Priest, Rogue, Monk, Dreadlord, Beastmaster, Necromancer, and Wizard. The AI also is quite similar on a private server level where in the land is procedurally generated but with Elves inhabiting the biggest forests and dwarves inhabiting the highest mountains but it will feature a different landscape in a different server. The game features creative design from NYT best selling author and if the 1 million dollar goal is reached Trolls, Ogres and Satyrs become playable races. I cant shill for this game any harder, please check it out ;P

The words 'Smedley' and 'genius' in the same sentence. Interesting.

Not an ultra-graphics snob, but that far back retro look is not pleasing.   The game would have to be really great to balance that out.  And Kickstarters will never display that greatness, only the fond wishes of the developers.

If wishes were magic horses, we'd already be flying around fully in Star Citizen.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

  • GroqstrongGroqstrong Member RarePosts: 825
Nope.  I agree with Arglebargle, graphics are way to retro.
  • NitthNitth Member UncommonPosts: 3,904
    Nope.

A successful business man like Mr Smedley would defiantly have access to credit and should finance his own endeavors.

Its sad so many people are desperate for games that they just nod their head and shell out cash blindly.

I'll buy the game when it launches purely to see Pat Rothfuss' influence if nothing else.  I have never given money to a game before I could actually play it since I pre-ordered Final Fantasy Tactics on playstation 1, if I break that trend it will likely be for CU in the future, but even that game I want to see more before I help fund development.

Generally speaking pre-funding/crowd-funding/early access are part of the problem in game development to me; my opinion will certainly change if the next wave of crowd-funded MMOs actually deliver what AAA studios have long been unable to.

An ARPG without dedicated servers is of no interest to me.  Add in open world and it seems less interesting. The look of the game screams mobile to me as well.

    Yeah...good luck with that...

Whoah. That's a hefty chunk of change. I'd have thought Smedley would be able to getting a line of credit or funding from investors for a project like this. Honestly though, 2d pixel graphics and rogue-like elements screams niche to me. I don't see this hitting $800k.

That looks interesting. I believe their 1.8 million dollar budget is a little unreasonable,  but maybe the scope of the game justifies that.

I though Brad was the genius behind EverQuest, isn't Smedley just the ring leader?

Nope Eq1 was actually Smedlys concept to begin with.
Perhaps so, but coming up with a great idea, and then later pissing off and driving away many of your customers and potential customers by unfair and on occasion, sociopathic rants directed towards those who either don't agree with, or question his decisions or statements.
Of course, the latest one I know of is his little rant about hurting the family of a person he feels wronged him. Not only was the issue he was upset about a non-violent, but the guys family had nothing at all to do with it, and yet Smed clearly and vocally advocated physical violence towards them.
As such actions are definitely inappropriate, and even potentially illegal though difficult to prosecute (inciting to violence charges), they are absolutely nothing that should ever be said public for any representative of a company, much less it's leader, even if they are thinking such things.
He's becoming rather toxic, and I'd bet people in the industry are aware of it.

Lost my mind, now trying to lose yours...

Smed has made nothing but F2P garbage for the past decade and we're supposed to reward him with kickstarter support? You do all realize he's been openly against sandbox MMO's for years, claiming they are outdated? Hence the abomination EQ1 has become and lets not forget the atrocious direction EQNext was headed.

Smed making a true old school MMO? Don't make me laugh, this will go P2W so fast it will make you wonder why you let the ghost of Sony past vomit another blunder. Your money would have less chance of being wasted with Brad and that's saying alot...

100K is more than enough for this shit. Investors gave him 1 mill and now he is starting kickstarter for another 800K. I guess he is looking to get his hands on the new bugatti after spending barely 50K in this shit.

Races are only one small element of what made EQ what it was.  "Genius" indeed.

As another said, this sounds like a mobile game offering.

This looks generic. I have not seen pixel art this boring, lifeless and bland. It has no distinct style or charm.

In fact, this looks like a fantasy RPG pack from RPG Maker VX.

It's quite easy to map in rpg maker xp if you have a good idea what you are doing. I have got quite a few experience on that rpg maker engine (Never finished a game tough I do have a demo of one of the projects and it's posted on youtube too. It's named Alive).

In any event I'm not crowd funding games at the moment. I'm just not seeing the value in it.
I don't think there ever will be......But that's just my opinion. This project IMO is exactly the reason why. Smedley should not need KickStarter. So, if he really does need it, because he can't get the money through traditional means, then what do those other sources see as problems that we can't?

    OR

He doesn't need KS but has fallen into the lure of taking a dip in the free money pool. That's not what KS was for.

If you just look at it on paper ,it looks decent enough but when you see the graphics/tech he is selling it is a 1995 game.We  al ready have a market flooded with second rate games,we need to see some Triple A games arising from the hollows of budgetware gaming.

I can tell by the pixels that this game has graphics.

An another note, there's actually some decent talent behind this. I backed it. Not 100% it's going to be my cup-o-tea but color me intrigued.
