Just you wait. In about 3-4 years my company will come out with an MMORPG that will astound all. It's a secret project so far so that's as much as I can tell you but your gonna love it. And no Microsoft or anybody else is going to be the publisher!

Your making a fair point, but at the end of the day small companies dont have the funding to support the newer, more advanced MMORPG development.

At the end of the day its all about return, if the company isnt going to make a profit on it, they wont do it.

Id love to see class games being produced by small companies but sadly bills gotta be paid, the smaller companies just cant afford the larger numbrs of skilled staff.

Sadly I have to agree with you and it's a consequence of the fact that the people who are only about the money totally overshadow those who want to do a good job of crafting an MMORPG. But there might be some hope if we take a look at another genre.

If you look at the FPS genre it's a complete disaster. There's just such a load of useless half finished FPS with barely a handful standing out. It has died down a little recently which is maybe a sign of investors listening more to the people they pay to create all those 1's and 0's. The point I want to make though is this: A few years ago (damn that long already!) The Sims came out of nowhere and took the world by storm. It was (like it or not) the top selling game for AGES. Going back to what I said earlier there was simply put so much of the same old s*** on the market, NO innovation, NO creativity, NO experimentation, just using a tried and proven formula light years beyond exhaustion. Then along came The Sims. It was in a manner of speaking a diamond in the rocks. It innovated, it was creative, it was a bit of a gamble for EA too (personal opionion that one).

What I want to draw is the we are seeing similar trends in the MMORPG market:

    * FPS saw those one or two which had the magic formula (Counter Strike is a definite qualifier, probably Quake aswell). MMORPG's i think it is fair to say Ultima and Everquest are the equivalents.

    * FPS then saw a flood of cheap and expensive clones overwhelming a market that was fast approaching (or already hitting) saturation. MMORPG's are seeing early stages of this exact process right now (in other words the worst of it).

    * Along The Sims and alot of people where happy. So for MMORPG's if the trends keep mroe or less the same we should see a "The Sims" appear for the MMORPG market and maybe like The Sims it will appear out of nowhere.

    * In the aftermath the dust starts to settle as opponents recover from the shock and start thinking twice about their products. What we see now is a slow easing of the about of BS which we saw earlier for FPS's. I'm hoping MMORPG's will see something similar too, then we could all sleep easy :)

Now I know The Sims isn't a FPS but it did steal quite a good portion of FPS customers which is why I'm using it in my example. Either way the message is the same. I'm quite sure we will see similar trends so this The Sims for MMORPG's as I will call it might be a revolutionary MMORPG which finally does away with the chopped up, battered and burnt D&D formulae and actually start a model from scratch tailoured for Massively Multiplayer OR it could be something completely different (an MMOSG maybe).

So in the end it's all relative :)

EDIT: Pressed the post button instead of preview (doh!)

FPS's are great, Counterstrike/UT/Q3 are definately without a doubt its leading titles.

As for MMORPGS, it is , like you said the same old stuff just with a different style and different way of playing.

Im looking forward to games like Lineage2 from NCSoft. To be honest, im afraid to say the state of mmorpgs is just getting to the point where there isnt that much new about them.

The only major thing ive seen is the permadeath in SWG. Which adds alot more to the game.

Well, no matter what, no matter who makes it or publishes it, if its good, i'l play it.
