We already knew that Fallout 4 was big, but it’s about to get a lot bigger. Over the next three months, Bethesda plans to release what they call their “first series” of add-ons in an “expanded DLC plan.” They promise more than $60 worth of additional content throughout the year, but the news isn’t all good: that alluring $25 season pass is going up to a full $50.

What does this mean for people that bought season pass at launch? Grandfathered in I hope, I often wonder why buy in at launch, I typically don't, with respect to Fallout 4 and considering Bethesda track record, I bought in at launch Full Priced Season Pass, now I would expect to be Grandfathered in considering the faith I had in them before they announced any dlc.

From what I have read, you will be "grandfathered" in for the upcoming expansions.

Even so much as they are keeping the price at the current level for another month or so, then it's going up. I bought it at launch, and I'm not disappointed with what is planned so far. I was hoping for a robot system to come out with mods when the GECK dropped, but this is even better.

Companies are testing how far they can go. Base games rose from 50 to 60 lately and we see more and more DLC of varying sizes. If you are not cautious nowadays you will end spending 100 €/$ or more for one game. Which might be great or crap.

Best way to handle this imo is to be patient. Never buy something which does not exist yet. And the greater your patience the less you have to pay because one rule is still true: Prices will drop over time. Always. ;)

I'm glad you have to pay for the DLC because I found the game boring and repetitive and I won't have to get curious and then disappointed if it was free and I was tempted to look in on it.  Played for 40 hours and got sick of going to a place, killing evetything and then going to the next place.  There's nothing to 'solve' or do other than shooting.  No RPG at all.

So glad I grabbed the SPass when it first came out. I'm surprised they're announcing this now, giving people time to buy it at the current price before it goes up. Y'all might want to check out GreenManGaming to see if their Valentine's coupon is still active, should drop the price to just under $20 like it did for me (think I paid like $18 with a coupon back in Dec 2015). Save you a little moneh for other things.

With DLC being outsourced you really shouldn't buy in advance. I've found sometimes I'm only interested in one or two DLC's instead of the whole pack, and it being cheaper to just get the two I'm interested in.

I honestly didn't see a reason to not get the Season Pass, GreenMan Gaming keeps discounting it to $18.00, if only one good dlc comes out your not wasting any money.

Years ago I used to love buying every dlc for games and fully completing them. For several years now, buying dlc's has been a rarity for me. The only company who does a significant amount of dlc's and doesn't aim to take advantage of the consumer is CD Projekt Red.

Companies getting staff to advertise their season passes?

The game got so boring so fast. Heck i don't even know many people still talking about that game.

You still have until the end of this month to get the Season Pass at the original price of $29. I think it's worth it just based on the three pieces they've shown so far, so everything past that will be icing on the cake.

But for $50, I probably wouldn't do it for that much.
or you could just move your entire gaming life back a few years and save a ton of money.

to be clear what I mean by that is to not buy or play games that are not at least 2 years old.

I dont practice that but I am saying its a method that could work

Thanks for the informative article and heads up on the price hike. I just picked up the season pass at Green Man Gaming for $24 with their ongoing 20% off voucher. I suggest anyone who likes F4 and is interested in the DLC do the same before March 1st!!!!!!!!!

And you can be up until the end of the month if what I read was correct.

Meh, F04 is one of the worst games Bethesda has ever released, wouldn't suggest it at all. Surprised they're trying to pull this DLC crap.

A lot of the DLC they have announced could be done by the modders, wait awhile and it will be.
  • NetspookNetspook Member UncommonPosts: 1,583
I'll do what I always do when there are season passes or multiple DLCs involved - I'll wait and grab the complete version at some sale. $100+ for a game, even with DLCs, isn't gonna happen.

You can always just wait a year or so and get the GOTY editions that typically have all the DLC at that point. Let the developers keep charging more and more for "DLC" in the form of season passes and I"ll buy fewer and fewer games at release.

Some have, like that Robot one. If I remember right there is a mod that got mentioned by MXR. That pretty much does what the DLC described word for word.

I'm curious on a few things. They have to be done right or i'm not coming back to FO4, cause that was the biggest disappointment of a fallout game I ever saw.

    1. Those "pets" you get seem interesting, can those pets be used to defend my hometown? can I change their personalities? Also can I get feral ghouls as pets?

    2. In that expansion, are we going to get a real "evil" faction like raiders and such.

    3. Are they bringing the Karma system back. Dumbest move ever taking such a long running feature out of the game.

    4. That robot pet, I can build, can I give that thing a personality, such as hates helping people, like chem taking, like cannibalism, like killing people, hates when you buy, likes when you steal, that sort of thing . Really annoyed me when every single one of my companions like one thing like chem taking and hated another like stealing, and what gives with all of them hating the institute, okay i get it they are the bad guys, but couldn't at least one of them liked it, not one of them liked those people.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Prices are bound to go up. $50 for a new game was a standard in the '90s. All other consumer prices have doubled in that time period, but software in general has remained flat despite ballooning budgets. You can always make the case that production efficiencies have decreased costs in line with inflation, but the growth of production costs for games doesn't really make sense. A game should be sold at around $90-$100 today, yet it remains around $60 due to the primary customer's expectations. Naturally it means companies will seek other methods to get to that $100 price point.
