It's almost as if some of these people are purposely trying to confuse others and start a debate based on misinformation. I guess when there is not a lot of other things to complain about because the game is looking to be very good from what the beta showed people get desperate and start making things up.

MMO is a game that has massive number of players sharing the same area in which they are placed just by virtue of being and arriving there , and not because they chose specific lobby,friend, or instance.
All the rest are lobby games.
Unfortunately the definition have been slipping for years now. Every year more and more non-mmo games are branded mmo. And every year those have less and less likeness to mmo.
So no wonder a multiplayer co-op shooter is now suddenly called MMO.
Heck, next year i recon that if the game can connect two players it will be called MMO

Unfortunately, what you are referring to as 'your' definition, is really just the agreed standard, you may not like it, but it really does take hundreds of players in the same instance, able to interract with each other, that classes a game as being massively multiplayer, anything less than that and its really just another multiplayer online game, which btw, is the label that the developers of The Division have given the game, so while you may disagree with the games developers, that is unfortunately, just your opinion.
The fact is, the first MMO wasn't called such because it had a thousand players in a single instance... or hundreds in a single area. It was called an MMO because it had substantially more players in a single persistent world than others had... and originally that number was in its 30s.
The Division isn't slated as a multiplayer online game. Its actually being sold as an Open World RPG... but that doesn't mean it isn't qualified as a multiplayer game, or an MMO. If The Division doesn't count as an MMO, then there are dozens of games on MMORPG.coms list that also don't qualify, as the division qualifies quite a bit more than them.
The only definition anyone here has, is the definition they create for themselves... there is no standard for what an MMO qualifies as.

All I'm saying, is that its all based on perception. To a person that only played the story lines and never saw the dark zone, I can see how they would conclude this is barely an MORPG.
To those like myself that spent a great deal of time in the DZ, its more of an MMO than many MMO's I've played recently. There is no single way to define what an MMO is.. you could ask 1000 people and get 1000 different answers.. and even if all those people were zoned into the same instance they would still say its only a Multiplayer Online Question, and doesn't qualify as an MMO.

what I am about to say is a bit off topic but I feel like it really needs to be said.
RPG is not really about story or stats-driven combat. It can be stats driven anything really not just combat its just that combat is what is most focused on because of tradition and how RPGs where born. But I will say I really really dont think one of the core corner stones of RPG is story. That is something that came out of the computer era.
anyway sorry I just wanted to say that, not trying to debate but just letting you know not everyone who played RPGs in during the birth (late 70s early 80s) would agree with that definition.

The DZ was only 1/8 or so of the total size it will be on launch. Its also very open and very fluid, so you could potentially have 4... 5... 6 times that amount on launch in the DZ? We just don't know.

True, but remember that the majority of MMORPGs simply give the appearance of "massive" since the number of players actually "living" in a given area at any one time is managed by instances, shards, etc. I think that even if this were ratcheted up to 30 or 40, then you'd probably be just fine. Ultimately, we're talking about a lot of action happening within a small area, so it should be interesting to see how that works out.

when in a beta testing phase one of the most important things to test at that point is a high player count. Thus if the cap is at 24 unless they are EXTREEMLY unprofessional you can expect the final player count to be very close to that number. Call it massive or not is beside the core point

Thats what I'm trying to point out.. it CAN'T be that total number.
The DZ has no loading once you're inside the DZ.. and they sectioned off a small corner of it. A VERY small corner. You could run into the red areas that were sectioned off.. but it said "you're going out of the beta areas" but conceivably ... during the live game.. those areas would be open. A 24 player count in the live game.. would mean you wouldn't see anyone in the dark zone. Ever. Its way too big of an area to cap 24 players.
Now they could do some type of chunking of data like vanguard did... but chances are.. they won't. When you're chasing a player from one part of the city to the next.. its also unlikely that they'll load into a new instance upon crossing a threshold
Believe me, I understand what you're saying, but unless you've actually seen it, its really hard to dictate how it will truly work. The zones are very large and very fluid... it is essentially an open world once you get in there... a very large one. 24 players in that large of a zone.... it might as well be a single player instance.

The question is... how will others classify this? Many gaming sites consider this to be on an MMO scale... in a gaming magazine, the little colored heading that classifies this game --will it be considered a Shooter? An RPG? An MMO? Action-RPG? I mean there are dozens here.

Of course the can an will include non MMORPGs.. but that doesn't mean they include just anything does it?
All I'm saying, is that its all based on perception. To a person that only played the story lines and never saw the dark zone, I can see how they would conclude this is barely an MORPG.
To those like myself that spent a great deal of time in the DZ, its more of an MMO than many MMO's I've played recently. There is no single way to define what an MMO is.. you could ask 1000 people and get 1000 different answers.. and even if all those people were zoned into the same instance they would still say its only a Multiplayer Online Question, and doesn't qualify as an MMO.
:shrug: it doesn't matter how people classify it. It does end up more as an opinion than a fact... there is no tru MMORPG definition.

If you are going to actively showcase games that arent mmorpg then at least make a sepereate forum and stop trying to lump everything with instances and lobbies as such.

It was claimed to be an MMO. That also seems clearly wrong, if this reddit thread is to be believed (players reporting a Dark Zone player cap of 24 players.)
Having fewer-than-average players for a FPS doesn't make you a "massively multiplayer online" game. The whole point of calling something massively multiplayer is that it has higher-than-average player counts.

This is is not the first non mmorpg that this site has wrote about or included, if you have an issue with games they include maybe you should find a new site to frequent.
It has "RPG" elements.
An MMO is just about being massively multiplayer and online.
An RPG is about story, progression, and stats-driven combat. Division has loot, which is progression.

RPG is not really about story or stats-driven combat. It can be stats driven anything really not just combat its just that combat is what is most focused on because of tradition and how RPGs where born. But I will say I really really dont think one of the core corner stones of RPG is story. That is something that came out of the computer era.
anyway sorry I just wanted to say that, not trying to debate but just letting you know not everyone who played RPGs in during the birth (late 70s early 80s) would agree with that definition.

The DZ was only 1/8 or so of the total size it will be on launch. Its also very open and very fluid, so you could potentially have 4... 5... 6 times that amount on launch in the DZ? We just don't know.
When it comes to testing a game getting that player cap as high to the planned release is pretty important because when players start to rise is when the hidden 'bugs' start to show themselves

True, but remember that the majority of MMORPGs simply give the appearance of "massive" since the number of players actually "living" in a given area at any one time is managed by instances, shards, etc. I think that even if this were ratcheted up to 30 or 40, then you'd probably be just fine. Ultimately, we're talking about a lot of action happening within a small area, so it should be interesting to see how that works out.

Point being... whats the number? You could say its 1000... you could say its 100. Its all relative.
And there were a lot of features they didn't test... FYI.. crafting.... most skills... a ton of their missions. Their testing cycle for their betas was relatively small and unlike other games I've tried..... maybe to their detriment. We just don't know a lot going into launch in two weeks
when in a beta testing phase one of the most important things to test at that point is a high player count. Thus if the cap is at 24 unless they are EXTREEMLY unprofessional you can expect the final player count to be very close to that number. Call it massive or not is beside the core point
and for the record Mount and Blade often handles more than 12v12...

The DZ has no loading once you're inside the DZ.. and they sectioned off a small corner of it. A VERY small corner. You could run into the red areas that were sectioned off.. but it said "you're going out of the beta areas" but conceivably ... during the live game.. those areas would be open. A 24 player count in the live game.. would mean you wouldn't see anyone in the dark zone. Ever. Its way too big of an area to cap 24 players.
Now they could do some type of chunking of data like vanguard did... but chances are.. they won't. When you're chasing a player from one part of the city to the next.. its also unlikely that they'll load into a new instance upon crossing a threshold
Believe me, I understand what you're saying, but unless you've actually seen it, its really hard to dictate how it will truly work. The zones are very large and very fluid... it is essentially an open world once you get in there... a very large one. 24 players in that large of a zone.... it might as well be a single player instance.
